The mysterious case of Societe Generale

Last week the #2 bank in France, Societe Generale, was brought to its symbolic knees after 31 year old trader Jerome Kievel caused a $7 billion dollar loss to the bank by setting up false accounts and transferring over $73 billion dollars in funds. Now the larger banks are circling, smelling blood. Kievel evidently pocketed nothing from these huge transfers of funds, which is even more peculiar.

One of the fears of conspiracy theorists is that a few central banks, and therefore a few “shadowy elite” characters, will control the global economy. Nothing spells Pluto in Capricorn more than a breakdown in the banking system, and the timing of this bank scandal just as Pluto enters Cap for the first time is extremely synchronistic.

Pluto also has a tendency to bring out secrets, and the laxity of oversight in the banking industry is beginning to generate some fear in the French populace and put the bank’s liquidity at risk. Kievel has suggested that there is no way he could have conducted such large scale trading without the bank having been aware of it, but as long as he was making money for the bank they turned a blind eye. This has rattled the nerves of all concerned

And so it begins! The journey of Pluto through the Capricornian world.

Wild swings in the markets

As befits the waning days of Pluto’s reign in Sagittarius, optimism on Wall Street prevailed over the facts. “What has happened is the Fed is flooding the system with liquidity and eventually we should see some traction in the economy,” said Steve Goldman, chief market strategist at Weeden & Co. “And stocks tend to respond first.”

This strategy, which worked well while Pluto was in Sag and optimism drove the markets, will not work so well with the more pragmatic approach Pluto will take in Capricorn where facts and technicals rule over fantasy. After the cut in the Fed rate, investors’ optimism soared, only to be brought back to earth with the revelation that the US federal deficit has ballooned to 219 billion dollars.

I’m anticipating the next week to continue in this same fashion, but with Mercury’s retrograde turn on the 28th and Pluto’s entry into Capricorn that week, we are likely to see the contraction that has been a long time coming.

Correction in the stock market – panic or go with the flow?

As I write this, the US markets are gearing up for the opening bell and doom and gloom are all over the airwaves. “Panic of 2008” shrieks Drudge. “Profits Plunge.” The Fed has lowered interest rates by 3/4 of a percentage point in the hope of staving off a stock market panic. Asian and European markets continued their downward slide as well.

Today we have Mercury conjunct Neptune in Aquarius, where our most visionary (Aquarian) ideas can become fuzzy and incomplete under the thumb of Neptune. Neptune can erode our confidence, or it can entice us into a dreamland of imagination and creativity. Either way, the sands are shifting under our feet for the next few days as we navigate the imminent move of Pluto into Capricorn.

Pluto seeks empowerment and destroys anything in its path that doesn’t assist in our ultimate evolution. After a long night of Sagittarius partying (no offense to you Sag types out there!) the Saturnian influence of Capricorn is demanding that the bills be paid. The initial shock of Pluto is always the most dramatic – then we learn to adjust to its intensity and make the changes he requires. Saturn’s travel through Virgo since the fall has given us a hint of what is to come, demanding a more conservative lifestyle that conserves energy and capital.

In order to navigate the panic in the markets, we have to think more like Saturn/Capricorn than like Jupiter/Sagittarius. Jupiter/Sag says, bigger is better! Let’s have more of everything! The sky’s the limit! Saturn/Capricorn says, what is practical here? Have you thoroughly researched these stocks? Do you have money in the bank? Do you really need that 7,000 square foot house?

This is particularly interesting for me because of the work that […]

The end of relentless optimism

The realism of Saturn in Virgo is beginning to have an effect on the continuing determined optimism of Jupiter and Pluto in Sagittarius with some of the more inflated (Sagittarius) stocks, mostly in tech, falling to more realistic levels. Apple, buoyed by the frenzy over the Iphone, fell almost 40 points in less than a week, and Google, having climbed 130 points in less than a month, fell 100 over the past few days.

The rise of these stocks coincided with the square of Jupiter (expansion) to Uranus (tech), an astrological signature that was considered by some to bring about a sudden downward shift in the markets; the Dow Jones Industrial Average peaked just at the point of the partile (exact) square. These signatures rarely work the way they expect them to, particularly where Uranus is involved, and the shift was in the upward direction rather than down. Uranus works by surprise, and will tend to bring whatever you least expect! But now that its influence is on the wane, Saturn is injecting reality into the situation and bringing Virgo’s cautionary nature into play.

This is not just an American problem, although the problems in the US with the falling dollar and housing market are causing a ripple effect in markets around the world. Asian markets fell yesterday, as did Canada’s. There are fears about the long-term stability of the US economy due to the falling dollar and housing market and I predict that the final conjunction of Jupiter and Pluto in Sagittarius in mid-December and Pluto then entering Capricorn in 2008 will mark the end of this long cycle of optimism.

At that point speculation will be a fool’s game and old-fashioned saving will come […]

Astrology Fund in the News

I’m taking a few days off so the advice column will be delayed until later in the week, but meanwhile take a look at this coverage of Henry Weingarten’s Astrology Fund on the financial website TheStreet.com:

For instance, earlier this year Weingarten predicted there would be a major downdraft in the stock market on Aug. 28. It was the last total lunar eclipse, a technical and astrological convergence that culminated with the Dow Jones Industrial Average tumbling 280 points to test the 13,000 level.

Coincidence? Maybe. But it was enough to make me want to find out what Weingarten was predicting at his conference on Sept. 11, the day of the solar eclipse.

The Astrologer’s Fund isn’t a mutual fund. It’s an institutional fund that manages money for high-net worth individuals and institutions. Weingarten declines to say how much he has under management.

According to the fund’s Website, it returned 17% in July, 26% in August and was up 9.7% for the first two weeks of September. However, these are unaudited results.

Weingarten’s head isn’t solely in the stars. He uses a combination of technical analysis, fundamental analysis and astrological charting to make predictions on the direction of commodities, currencies and stocks. The New York money manager says that when all three converge, a major market move is usually in the works. And most of the time he can determine its direction.

“We use all the standard fundamental and technical tools, but astrology is most important,” says Weingarten. “That’s what makes us unique and allows us to capture market surprises most people don’t see. It’s out-of-the-box thinking.” But he adds that if something is overwhelmingly undervalued on a fundamental basis, “I follow that. It depends on the situation.”

Weingarten is […]
