Worship of Zeus may be much older than supposed

ZeusExcavations at Mount Lykaion in Greece have unearthed pottery shards that date back over 5,000 years.  Mount Lykaion is one of the mythical birthplaces of Zeus (later known as Jupiter in Roman mythology), and this has led to speculation that Zeus may have been worshipped in this location 1,000 years earlier than previously supposed.

David Gilman, senior research scientist, says:

The fact that the ash altar to Zeus includes early material dating back to 3000 BCE suggests that the tradition of devotion to some divinity on that spot is very ancient. The altar is long standing and may in fact pre-date the introduction of Zeus in the Greek world. We don’t yet know how the altar was first used, and whether it was used in connection with natural phenomena such as wind, rain, light or earthquakes, possibly to worship some kind of divinity male or female or a personification representing forces of nature.” .

Evidently there are layers of archaeological findings that span thousands of years, and early 20th century excavations suggested the earlier activity there to be 700 bce.  One of the arguments against ancient civilizations such as Atlantis is that no evidence has yet been found for such a civilization, but as archaeologists continue digging deeper and deeper into the millenia they keep pushing back the limits of the earliest civilizations.

Was Zeus a human person that was literally born on Mount Lykaion?  In mythology he was one of the Titans, the children of Gaia (Earth) and Ouranos (Sky) that later battled with the gods for control.  This is very similar to the Genesis myth of the Daughters of Man (Earth) mating with the Sons of God and bearing children:

The Nephilim were on the earth in those days, and also […]

More evidence of ancient civilizations

Rich sent me  about an ancient site at Göbeklitepe in southwest Turkey that appears to be around 12,000 years old:

The Göbeklitepe monuments were created twelve thousand years ago. In other words, 10,000 years before the founding of the Roman Empire, 8,000 years before the appearance of the Hittites, and 7,000 years before the building of the Great Pyramids.

I am standing amidst evidence that could upset everything we know about our remote past. Imagine such an age that it is still thousands of years to the discovery of metal and that the best cutting tool available is made of a piece of flintstone, with which you will hack 25-ton obelisks out of the bedrock and, carving those frightful animal figures on them, drag them here and erect them. We are talking about a project that required the simultaneous toil of two thousand men, a project so big for its time as to be considered gargantuan. Why did these people feel a need to erect such a complex of buildings? Perhaps we will never learn the answer to this question. It is thought that this was a cult centre since everyone, dig director Prof. Dr. Klaus Schmidt included, are in agreement that it was not a site used for vital needs such as hunting and shelter.

How could these ancient peoples, born centuries before the advent of tools, create such a city?   that only 1.5% of the site has been excavated, and its beginning is estimated to be around 11,000 bce, which would be about 13000 years ago, requiring a level of technology not believed possible in that time period.  From Wikipedia again: “The archaeologists estimate that up to 500 […]

5000 year old solar calendar found in Canada!

Rich sent me , and this is a wonderful example of the way new discoveries (Uranus) often have to battle with old and rigid ideologies (Saturn).

An academic maverick is challenging conventional wisdom on Canada’s prehistory by claiming an archeological site in southern Alberta is really a vast, open-air sun temple with a precise 5,000-year-old calendar predating England’s Stonehenge and Egypt’s pyramids.

Mainstream archeologists consider the rock-encircled cairn to be just another medicine wheel left behind by early aboriginals. But a new book by retired University of Alberta professor Gordon Freeman says it is in fact the centre of a 26-square-kilometre stone “lacework” that marks the changing seasons and the phases of the moon with greater accuracy than our current calendar.

“Genius existed on the prairies 5,000 years ago,” says Freeman, the widely published former head of the university’s physical and theoretical chemistry department.

This doesn’t surprise me one bit.  Rich and I have for many years both been avid readers of the work of , who has devoted his life to searching for evidence of an advanced ancient civilization.  It seems perfectly plausible that there are ancient civilizations buried under the ocean after the last ice age in 10,500 bce.  After all, archaeologists used to think the story of Troy was just a legend until the city was discovered buried under rubble in the early 20th century.

The Antikythera Mechanism that we discussed earlier this year is another example of advanced knowledge available to the ancients.  Much of what was yesterday’s science fiction is today’s science, and I believe that we will see the same thing happen in archaeology.  In order for that to happen, though, the archaeological establishment will have to cultivate more of an open mind […]

The Tale of the Antikythera Mechanism

antikytheraA new video shows a reconstruction of t by museum curator Michael Wright:

The Antikythera Mechanisms is an extremely sophisticated device using a 19-year lunar cycle, which corresponds to the 19-year cycle of the lunar nodes.   weaves an exciting tale of the origins of this incredible device, and notes that when Cicero saw a device like this one, in the first century BC he wrote:

“The invention of Archimedes deserves special admiration because he had thought out a way to represent accurately by a single device for turning the globe those various and divergent movements with their different rates of speed,” he wrote. “The moon was always as many revolutions behind the sun on the bronze contrivance as would agree with the number of days it was behind it in the sky.”

offers an extensive analysis of the Mechanism, including a description of Dr. Wright’s research as shown in this video.  Scientists are unable to account for the advanced astronomical and technological knowledge evident in this computer that is over 2000 years old.  It was well over a thousand years before anything with this complexity appeared again in the Western world.

You may call me a kook, but to me this is one more instance that suggests the existence of an advanced civilization existing in prehistoric times from which a trickle of scientific knowledge filtered down into our own ancient civilizations.  There is considerable evidence of advanced inventions in primitive societies, but these inventions exist in a vacuum without associated technological progress in other areas.  John Seabrook of the New Yorker Magazine writes:

In fact, there is evidence that earlier civilizations were much more technically adept than we […]

New crop circle found August 8, 2008

This crop circle was found at 5:30 am.  The Crop Circle Connector field report seems to suggest that it was made using mechanical means, but it’s a fascinating image nonetheless.

Harold Stryderight tells us that the figure 8 refers to the upcoming lunar eclipse:

Each big circle of balls of increasing size shows an almost complete lunar phase cycle of 22 days (where the full number equals 29.5). Then 14 or 15 small “spikes” between balls tell on which days our Moon will appear above the horizon at sunset, moving west to east each day, so as to lie eventually opposite the setting Sun on August 16 (the exact number of days equals 14.75). Similar symbols were shown in lunar-phase drawings from Stonehenge 1996, Windmill Hill 1996, Milk Hill 2001 or East Field 2007.

At its centre, we can see the ancient Celtic Cross symbol for “planet Earth” (from Wiltshire 1990-1992), superimposed partly on the largest ball or “full Moon” which has been already 15 days above the horizon at sunset. On that day–August 16—planet Earth will come directly between our Sun and the Moon, so as to create an 81% partial shadow on the Moon as shown.

All data and images taken from Crop Circle Connector story.
