Libra New Moon, October 19 2017: Finding balance in the midst of chaos

Libra New Moon(See the end of the post for the geeky astrological details)

The New Moon is the darkest time of the lunar cycle – the time when there is no lunar light. The Sun and Moon are in exact alignment in the sky, at the same degree, and the lunar light is obscured by the Sun. For a brief moment we are suspended in time, and life is full of unrealized potential.

New Moons are famously a time for a new beginning.  A new lunar cycle – a new way of looking at the world.  In Libra, that new beginning takes the form of a new way of seeing all of the different kinds of relationships in our world: relationships between people, polarities of ideas, the spectrum of beliefs.  Under the influence of Libra, every thing is weighed against another in the attempt to find balance and perfect harmony.  Giving and receiving and the sharing of energy becomes more important, and integrating the two into a perfect flow becomes the goal.

This perfect harmony is difficult to achieve in today’s world which is full of accelerated intensity and chaos, and the achievement of equilibrium is made more difficult in this year’s Libra New Moon as a disruptive force applies pressure on both the Sun and Moon, demanding that we get out of our comfortable environments and find a new way that is more authentic and true. And yet Venus, the ruler of this New Moon, is also in the sign of Libra, reminding us that love and beauty are of paramount importance, and what will save this world and ourselves as well.

Still, there is a force of intensity and passion that continues knocking at the soul’s door, demanding to be let in. This force cares nothing for the balance and harmony that Libra seeks to teach; instead it insists on nothing less than absolute truth.  We find ourselves stepping ever deeper into the realm of darkness, and then emerging into the light and learning to balance the two. This process may bring up old wounds and emotions as we learn to clear the psychic debris of the past and emerge into the light with greater harmony and integration.

The New Moon is a perfect time to begin something new.  It is an auspicious time for a new relationship or partnership, and a wonderful time to transform a current relationship into a more balanced connection.  This New Moon asks that we allow the dark and inconvenient truths to emerge into the light, and integrate them into an awakened consciousness, and facilitates the process of moving forwards into an enlightened destiny.

Geeky details:  Jupiter is conjunct Mercury in Scorpio, Mars in Virgo is opposite Chiron, Venus is singleton in Libra.  The New Moon trines the South Node and sextiles the North.

The compelling power of the Aries Full Moon October 5, 2017

Aries Full Moon

This Aries Full Moon takes the power of Mars to energize us and stir us to action, and amplifies it into a new dimension.  Mars is locked in a dramatic tango with Venus right now, and Mars is the ruler of this Full Moon which promotes it to great importance.  This means that we are more self-oriented and potentially more reactive than we might normally be, and this can result in greater interpersonal conflict.

This dance is embedded in the chart of the Aries Full Moon – another symbol of polarities since the Sun is in Libra, the sign of balance, and the Moon is in Aries, Libra’s opposite polarity. Aries is self-oriented where Libra attempts to balance self vs other – finding that sweet spot in the middle is the message of the Aries Full Moon on October 5th.

Our relationship with others are a mirror of our own internal conflicts, and the attempt to find a harmonious counterbalance, both in our own emotional natures and personalities and in our relationships, is intensified and made more urgent with.  Anything artificial or illusory falls away under this Full Moon and we are given the choice to create transformation or remain in ignorance.

Fortunately, we are blessed at this time with mental clarity and an enhanced ability to communicate our personal wisdom, and a grounding influence can help to provide stability but may also set up road blocks that need to be worked through. In the midst of this, there is a tremendous push for personal liberation and creating the kind of change that will facilitate and encourage a release from old patterns that bind us.

Geeky astrological details – These aspects are embedded into the Full Moon chart: Mars, ruler of the Full Moon, conjoins Venus.  The lunation is squared by Pluto. Mercury conjoins the Sun and opposes the Moon. Saturn harmonizes with both Sun and Moon.  Jupiter opposes Uranus.

Here are some ways to utilize the energies of this Full Moon:

  • Physical activity is important in any Mars-y period, and for a few days after this Full Moon it is nearly essential.  Joyful activity such as dance, or activity with intentional such as yoga or the martial arts, will be very helpful in balancing the brain/body energetic systems.
  • Ask yourself if there are areas in your relationships that are out of balance.
  • If you are someone who easily speaks your mind to others, practice listening and receiving to achieve greater balance.  And if you are someone who finds it difficult to express yourself, try speaking out with kindness and clarity to help you find that sweet spot of harmony.
  • If there is a problem relationship in your life, visualize your ideal outcome keeping in mind the principles of balance and the importance of fulfillment for all involved.

Setting the stage: the Lunar Eclipse at the Full Moon in Aquarius

lunar eclipse august 2017

We are deeply into the season of Leo now – Leo the lion, the Divine Child, the magical Self.  Beginning with the first Leo New Moon on July 23rd, moving through the lunar eclipse on August 7th when the Leo sun obscures the Aquarius Moon, and culminating at the Solar Eclipse on August 21 (did you buy your eclipse glasses yet??), the divine energies of Leo are showering us with blessings of self-actualization and the potential for the opening of the heart.

Leo is ruled by the Sun, the center of the solar system and of the astrological pantheon.  The Sun represents the True Self – the incarnated soul. Powered by the giver of life, the solar energies, Leo encourages us to be our best self that we can possibly be.  The Sun is associated with the physical heart in medical astrology, and have shown that the health of the emotional heart (the Moon) is connected to the health of the physical heart (the Sun) as well.

Leo’s tendency is to try to feel good about one’s self through impressing others rather than through simply doing good things with no apparent reward such as Leo’s opposite, Aquarius, might do.  In today’s lunation, the Leo Sun will pass directly over the Aquarius Full Moon, giving us an opportunity to transcend the individuality of our personal ego and connect with all of mankind – to take a higher perspective and a broader vision than the usual (Aquarius) while allowing the majesty of our individual brilliance to continue to shine (Leo).

Mars aligns with the Sun in Leo, enhancing this Leo influence even more, and the North Node of the Moon forms a Fire Grand Trine with Saturn (stability) and Uranus (innovation). This lunation is packed with a powerful creative force that can be harnessed and utilized through your intentions.

It’s important to remember that while our pure intentions create our reality nearly all of the time (except when Pluto is involved!), when the energy of the planets and luminaries is this strong our intentions carry even more force.  This is a good time to pay attention to your thoughts and create intentions that will serve you both personally as well as your family and community.  A harmonious aspect from Jupiter (abundance) to both the Sun and Moon will be a marvelous ally to helping you to create wonder and magic at this powerful time.

It’s here! The Solar Eclipse of August 2017 – what does it mean for you?

August 2017 Leo eclipse

The Solar eclipse on August 21, 2017 falls in the sign of Leo, the Divine Child – the innocent heart, the soul of magic and wonder.  Leo rules the heart and the vitality of the Self: it encourages us to open our hearts to love for others and for ourselves. Ruled by the Sun itself, Leo is the essence of Kingship – the divine and royal part of ourselves that is full of self-respect and kindness.  Leo encourages us to express our best selves and while Leo is associated with the need for admiration, ultimately our best selves find expression without the need for others’ notice and attention.  Creative self-expression and the courage and confidence to allow our inner beauty to be expressed through outward means are the force behind the Leo New Moon.

A solar eclipse occurs at the New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are conjunct (next to each other) in the sky.  As the Moon moves through its orbit it passes between the Sun and the Earth, briefly obscuring the light of the Sun.  A New Moon is only an eclipse when the lunation (Sun/Moon conjunction) occurs near the lunar nodes, the points where the Moon crosses the path of the Sun.  Here is where astrology gets involved:  The descending (South) and ascending (North) nodes of the Moon represent a path of Fate from the past (South Node) to the future (North Node).  For this reason, an astrological eclipse can bring about events that have enormous significance, especially if they fall on a point in someone’s individual chart.

The chart this eclipse is a fiery one!  This is the second Leo New Moon in a month, and at nearly (28 degrees 50 minutes) the last degree of Leo, completing a pattern around self-actualization and ego development.  We see not only the Sun and Moon with the North Node in Leo, but we also have Mars in Leo (action and courage) in a Grand Fire Trine with Saturn in Sagittarius (testing of ideologies and beliefs) and Uranus in Aries (the power of the individual to create change).  Fire Grand Trines facilitate action but are not always self-aware (air) or pragmatic (earth) enough to create smart and well reasoned strategies.  The harmonious trine between Uranus and the eclipse is just about exact, making this a powerful harmonic integration of individuality and soul purpose.

Saturn and Mercury are retrograde, suggesting that there will be further tests before a plan is brought to fruition. Pluto in Capricorn (breakdown of power structures and transformation) is in a challenging square to All About Favorite Jupiter (positive relationships) which could be a harbinger of a further breakdown of political alliances, especially in the US where the eclipse is most visible.

On a transformational and psychological level, eclipses are associated with the unmasking of something which has been hidden.   The unconscious motivations and hidden dreams of the lunar force temporarily obscures the solar force of consciousness and the power of the will.  In the heart-opening sign of Leo, this is an opportunity to ask for the courage to love unconditionally – to clear any blockages of fear and distress which shut down the creative force.  That creative loving force is the power behind our inspiration as well as our life force and physical energy.  Leo rules the physical heart which is powered by the emotional heart of the Moon, and in this New Moon the force of divine love is as strong as it can get.

This eclipse famously falls on the ascendant (rising sign) in the chart of Donald J. Trump and is very near his natal Mars.  An hysterically entitled (but otherwise fair) reflects the opinions of many astrologers that this could be the ultimate downfall of the Trump presidency.*  I will write a separate article about this, but suffice it to say that this is a very significant planetary influence for Trump. The fact that the eclipse triggers his Mars (aggressive force) is problematic, particularly in light of his tendency to exert that aggressive force in unpredictable ways.

As with any New Moon, this Solar Eclipse is an opportunity for us to dramatically transform our lives by allowing all subterfuge and false modesty to fall away, allowing our true selves to emerge and shine gloriously as the Sun.  Embracing our vulnerability, let us explore the innocence of the pure heart within us and fearlessly dance before the entire world with magic and beauty.

Astronomical details.  Much is being written about this solar eclipse being a once in a lifetime event, overstating its significance to the global community.  To put things in perspective, there are typically two solar eclipses every year.  One solar eclipse every one to three years is a total eclipse.  What makes the eclipse in August 2017 unusual is that the path of the eclipse covers ONLY the United States, and some believe that the effect of an eclipse is strongest in areas where it is most visible.

* The Newsweek article claims that this is the first eclipse since 1776 which falls exclusively across the United States, but while it would be a fascinating corollary if true, the eclipse of November 30 1776 appears not to have hit the US at all according to .

Capricorn Full Moon, July 9 2017: Find your footing in the midst of chaos

The Full Moon is the culmination of the lunar cycle. Beginning with the New Moon, when the Sun and Moon are fused and the solar and lunar energies combine to spark a new beginning, the Moon waxes in the sky into a beautiful glowing orb of magic and wonder at the Full Moon.

Full Moons are known to have an effect on the ocean tides, and because the Moon operates astrological at the heart level it touches the soul and stimulates a yearning for oneness and connection. The Moon operates primarily at the subconscious level, triggering our hidden desires and secret fears as well as feelings of love and joy.

When the Moon is full in the earthy sign of Capricorn, it is more stable and grounded, less subject to the ebb and flow of emotion.  However, this Full Moon embraces the extremely potent force of Mars, planet of aggression and rage, opposite Pluto, planet of destruction. (Mars in Cancer conjoins the Sun and Pluto in Capricorn conjoins the Moon.)   To complicate matters even further, the revolutionary planet Uranus is in a wide square (90 degree) aspect to the whole thing, stimulating a breakthrough or breakdown of some kind.

With the Moon conjunct Pluto, emotions will be intensified and there will be an urgency that comes from your most true heart.  Confrontations and passionate exchanges are a virtual certainty but with conscious intention we can focus this energy in a way that will help to create effective change.  The conjunction of the Sun to Mars creates an intense wave of energy that can be used positively to fuel and motivate our intentions to create exactly what we want in our lives as long as we are not derailed by the emotional roller coaster of Moon/Pluto.

Saturn (tests and challenges) is still facing off against Chiron (wounding and healing), lifting the scab off the emotional wound to facilitate (and in some cases force) the healing process to occur.  This is not a time to shrink from confrontation; it IS a time to utilize these energies for positive change by finding your center and determining the correct course of action.

Fortunately we have some planetary assistance to help us to do just that.  Neptune (the soul teacher) is in a harmonious trine to the Sun right now which helps us to find the flow and connects us to a divine source of inspiration.  Mercury (the mind) harmonizes with Venus (relating) smoothing the way in our communication with others.  Chiron (healing) harmonizes in a trine to Mars (desires), soothing the frantic urgency with which we sometimes face our problems.

The energy of this Full Moon has already begun since Mars began the opposition to Pluto a few days ago.  Expect this intensity to continue at least until the 11th  when Mars and Pluto have separated and the Moon has moved into Aquarius.
