Taurus New Moon of power and majesty, May 18th

14730934_sIn the astrological pantheon, the zodiac signs are either cardinal (initiation), fixed (control) or mutable (adaptable).  The cardinal signs initiate and inspire action and leadership, the fixed signs ground and intensify, and the mutable signs disseminate and provide a way to move into the next cycle.

Taurus is one of those fixed signs that needs a high level of control and power, and the New Moon in Taurus urges us to ground and find stability in the midst of fluidity.  Under this combination of energies the grounding of the Taurus New Moon will offer a basis from which to experience the flexibility of Mercury retrograde from a more empowered place.  The New Moon takes place just after midnight on the 18th on the East coast of the US and Europe, but late in the evening on the 17th in areas west.

With this Taurus New Moon we move from the Taurus/Scorpio polarity of the Full Moon earlier in the month, to the complete settling into the roots of our experience of the Taurus influence.

Although Taurus is traditionally ruled by Venus and is therefore associated with a love of beauty and the comforts of life in a physical body, I like to think of Taurus as also being ruled by the Earth – Taurus has a fine appreciation for flowers, gardens, and other earthly things. Still, Venus is strong right now – in the maternal and nurturing sign of Cancer where we can nurture our connections with our family and our tribe with greater awareness than ever, and in a harmonious trine to Neptune which helps us to expand our personal affections into deeper compassion and soulful contact.  An opposition from Venus to powerful Pluto intensifies these connections and helps us to […]

Scorpio Full Moon May 2015: the Cauldron of Transformation

Scorpio Full Moon May 2015

Once the Moon enters Scorpio late on May 2nd it will begin to form the Full Moon opposition formation against the Taurus Sun, stimulating the beginning of the lunar experience. All Full Moons are formed by a polarity between the Sun in one sign balanced against the Moon in the opposite sign. Each opposing pair is a cycle of energy that flows from one sign to the other, each sign containing what the other lacks. Scorpio and Taurus are both fixed signs, both are highly personal signs with one being ruled by Mars (Scorpio) and one by Venus (Taurus). Both are concerned with matters of earthly life, but in Taurus we hold on to who we are, and in Scorpio we must let go of who we think we are in order to become transformed in the purging fire. Taurus seeks harmony and serenity, and Scorpio seeks passion and drama.

You can see why a Taurus or Scorpio Full Moon is intense! At the Scorpio Full Moon we find every aspect of our being intensified under Scorpio as the Taurus Sun encourages us to ground into the earth and find pleasure in simplicity. The planet Mercury (mind and intellect) is opposite Saturn (focus and achievement) which inspires us to take all matters more seriously. This can help us to become more full engaged in the process of lifting the darkness within us into light and accepting all aspects of ourselves with greater awareness.

The Sun and Moon both form a challenging square to Jupiter during this lunation (lunar event), expanding our sense of what is possible and helping us to let go of anything that causes us to feel […]

Emerging into Spring at the New Moon in Aries

Aries New Moon Aries is the first sign of the zodiac, and the Aries New Moon occursin springtime when (in the northern hemisphere) new life is bursting out of every corner. The Aries New Moon gives us an opportunity to emerge from winter’s hibernation with new goals, new desires, a fresh new start. Under the Aries New Moon we can put all of the challenges of the past behind us and begin anew with all the innocence of a child but the power of an adult.

A strong square aspect between Mars (aggression) and Jupiter (expansion) can enhance confidence but it can also raise tempers and create conflicts.  Mars is in Taurus now where it tends to resist behavior that is too radical, but if we try to stifle our resistance it may blow up like a bull (Taurus) in a china shop.  Channeling this energy into a project that requires faith and confidence is a helpful way to manage this Mars/Jupiter combination.

Since Aries is ruled by Mars, a forceful Mars aspect at the time of an Aries New Moon suggests that a great deal of energy is likely to be generated by this New Moon.

This New Moon also contains a force of creative energy, with both Mercury and Venus aspecting Neptune and opening up windows to the divine (Neptune) which facilitate the flow of imagination and idealism. These aspects will continue to affect us for several days after the New Moon so the doorways to new experiences will remain open for some time!

Blood Moon, Full Moon, Eclipse! April 4, 2015

blood moon eclipse 2015This eclipse is being called the “shortest lunar eclipse in a century,” but it is quite powerful astrologically since it triggers both Uranus (radical behavior) and Pluto (destruction and regeneration) in a very tight aspect from both the Sun and Moon.  The Sun aligns with Uranus, fostering rebellion and a desire to separate from anything which holds us back, and Uranus opposes the Moon which creates a restless need for something to change.

(This eclipse falls on Passover and is called a Blood Moon which as a lunar tetrad is connected to Biblical prophecies about the fate of Israel.  You can read more about that here in an earlier article. For the astronomers view see .)

Eclipses occur when the lunar nodes align with the Sun and Moon, and because the lunar nodes are connected to the journey of our destiny from past to future there is a fated quality to eclipses in which something which has been hidden is revealed.

This is a Full Moon in Libra, and the Libra Moon opposes the Aries Sun setting off a polarity between Self (Aries) and Other (Libra).  The Libra Moon craves connection and the Aries Sun desires self-actualization so in the Full Moon we must strike a balance between these two opposites.

Pluto makes this balance difficult since it forms a T-square as it squares (90 degrees) both the Sun and the Moon, challenging both sides to seek the extremes of their expression.  Our conscious Self (Sun) wants to be MORE Arian – more assertive, more individualistic.  Our lunar emotional instincts attempt to flee from conflict and desire nothing but peace and harmony.  This is an eclipse, so in the effort […]

New Moon at the Spring Equinox! Time for a fresh start

New Moon Aries Equinox

The Aries New Moon on March 20th at 6:45 pm Eastern time occurs at the Aries Point – the zero degree of Aries that marks the beginning of the entire zodiac.  For the northern hemisphere, this marks the first day of spring (you Aussies and Kiwis, and anyone living in Antarctica, may want to read my earlier article about astrology in the southern hemisphere here).

The Aries Point gets a special mention in astrological literature.  Kim Falconer , “the AP represents a movement (cardinal) from an inner quality to an outer manifestation. It orients us towards the world at large—society, public events and all relationships propelled from the individual to the collective.”

The sign of Aries is itself the beginning of manifestation in the world – the point of initiation and assertive dynamic experiences that push us into the world itself.  Any New Moon marks a new beginning – the beginning of a new lunar cycle that wipes the slate clean and provides an opportunity to create something new in our lives.  Any Aries New Moon adds another layer of excitement and Marsy energy to stoke the fires and energize that creation.

A New Moon at the Aries Point is an explosion of fresh new potent creative enthusiasm that can provide the motivation we need to begin something anew.  The challenging square (90 degree aspect) between Uranus and Pluto is still very tight, the two planets are just 9 minutes apart, so the adjustment is not easy.  Uranus breaks apart the old way and leaves us to put together the pieces.  Pluto assists with the destruction and reminds us who we really are at our core so that when […]
