A Big Big Full Moon in Leo, February 2015

Leo Full Moon February 2015The Leo Full Moon on February 3rd is a powerhouse of enthusiasm and positive energy.  The sign of Leo is majestic and creative, always seeking ways to shine and express the uniqueness of the Self.  In this Full Moon, the Moon conjoins expansive Jupiter, bestowing confidence and abundance and opening the heart to greater potential for joy.

At the Leo Full Moon the Leo Moon opposes the Aquarius Sun, so there is a tension between the focus on the personal (Leo) and a push for a more transpersonal experience where all of humanity becomes equivalent to the individual self (Aquarius).  This tension is amplified by the presence of Jupiter, which aligns with the Moon to open the heart and opposes the Sun to plant a seed of dissatisfaction with the status quo and encourage us to seek ever greater experiences and personal admiration.  For Leo’s desire to shine from the open heart also contains a need for adulation from others that can be triggered by Jupiterian righteous confidence.

All Full Moons require balance and integration between two opposing polarities, and this dance between the development of the personal Self (Leo) a the more detached and reasoned focus on humanitarian service (Aquarius) is a tricky one.  Fortunately the Sun, in a harmonious sextile to Uranus, helps us to bridge that divide by exciting the mind and opening up new pathways for us to re-imagine the world around us.

There is a lineup now of planets in Pisces (Mars, Chiron, Venus and Neptune) ask that we surrender and let go of our ideas of who we are and what we must have for our happiness (Leo) in order to find a more transcendent bliss that comes directly from the Divine […]

Mercury retrograde at the Aquarius New Moon, January 2015

Aquarius New MoonMercury turns retrograde on January 21st where it will encourage us to look back rather than forwards and see where we need to reflect, retreat, relax, or revise.  Mercury of course rules the mind and the way we communicate with others and generally process information, including the vehicles for that communication such as our technological devices and travel timetables.

Mercury retrograde is a mainstream concept now and even the New York Times, which  pooh-poohed the idea that a planet appearing to move backwards could be a real thing.  Times have changed, and I like to think that’s largely because of the explosion of REAL astrology on the Internet, and in the New York Times is more supportive of the concept if not totally enthusiastic.  The lack of enthusiasm can be blamed on astrology writers who admonish readers to put everything on hold while they hide from their lives until the retrograde is over, which is silly and unhelpful.

To understand the illusion of its movement means to realize that we are not at the center of things, that there is a reality beyond the one we see. (For astrology bloggers, this is less a problem than further evidence of the planet’s wiliness — as if its dangerous power is drawn less from what the planet actually does or is and more from the story of our confused efforts to understand it.)

There is a wisdom behind retrogrades that encourages us to take a breath and stop what we are doing, if only for a moment, and look back at our lives before forging ahead with something new.  Mercury isn’t the only planet that retrogrades, but it does so more often and […]

Cancer Full Moon is a powerhouse of energy

full_moon_stock_by_Moon_WillowStockIn its own sign of Cancer the Full Moon is an emotional one – opening up the heart and requiring us to explore our own vulnerability. This particular lunation is powerful, with the Pluto (transformation) conjunct the Sun and opposing the Moon. Pluto encourages/forces us to go deep, beyond the superficial, and discover the treasure that lies there along with the ugly stuff that we prefer to keep hidden. Creating additional intensity is the square to Uranus which brings impatience and a potential for reckless behavior.

The Sun is in Capricorn now, and this Full Moon asks us to find balance between the emotional reactivity of Cancer and the cold hard facts of Capricorn.  Our feeling nature and our practical side must find balance now.

All of these energies combine to create an intense experience that will be made easier with conscious attention. Psychodrama and ritual can be a great benefit during this lunation – this is a perfect time for prayer through dance or movement. Fortunately there are several beneficial aspects that will help to provide ease and support during this time (the power of the Full Moon usually lasts for about three days) including the harmonious sextile from both Mercury (mind) and Venus (relationships) to Saturn (grounding and structure) that provides stability and sensibility.

Capricorn New Moon at the Solstice: The dark point of stillness

Capricorn New Moon Winter Solstice

“The black moment is the moment when the real message of transformation is going to come.  At the darkest moment comes the light.” – Joseph Campbell

The Capricorn New Moon will occur just six minutes after the moment of the Winter Solstice – the point at which the Sun moves into Capricorn in the tropical system.  The three days before the Winter Solstice are the darkest days of the year in the northern hemisphere.  Not only are the days shorter, but the Sun is lower in the sky, causing shadows to lengthen and its motion appears to stand still.

The Winter Solstice marks the return to the light – after the Solstice the days start growing longer and the Sun stronger.  As humans we are naturally drawn to light and tend to shun the darkness, but it is in the quiet stillness of the dark, when we are not distracted by the flickering images that pass through our life, that we can go deeply within into the core of our Selves and discover who we are beneath the superficial comings and goings of our experiences. Light a fire with the Sagittarius New Moon November 22!

Sagittarius Full MoonEvery New Moon brings a new beginning with the new lunar cycle.  The Sun and the Moon come together in an alchemical conjunctio – the reunification of the masculine conscious force (Sun) with the instinctive lunar feminine (Moon).  When this new beginning occurs in Sagittarius, the sign of adventure and ideas and meaning and just plain fun, we have the opportunity to bring in more zest and gusto.  Suddenly we are aware of unlimited possibilities, and our view across the future is longer and more encouraging.

The symbolism of the New Moon is even more powerful since the both the Sun and Moon are at the very first degree of Sagittarius.  A New Moon at the first degree of a sign is very symbolic of a fresh new energy coming into our lives and sweeping away the old. Under the influence of Scorpio the dead and dying aspects of our lives were immolated in fire, and now under Sagittarius the old is swept away and a new expansive way of looking at the world emerges. […]
