Preparing for the upcoming Solar Eclipse on July 1

lunar eclipse July 1 2011I generally reserve my posts on the faster moving cycles for my and pages, but we have a few things going on right now that are worth mentioning here.

First, the Sun is moving into a potentially challenging alignment with Uranus and Pluto that will last until the solar eclipse on July 1st.  I see this eclipse event as the trigger for the big Uranus/Pluto square which is as close in July (less than two degrees) as it will be until the two clash for real next year.

As individuals, we have a number of different influences that make up our personality.  These are clearly identified in our birthchart which makes it easier to understand how these different facets of our personality interact and work together or clash.  As the Sun moves closer to the exact square to Uranus on June 26th and to Pluto on June 28th these different facets within us could become more difficult to integrate.  Remember that planetary cycles don’t create problems for us unless there is something that requires adjustment in order to find balance.

The Sun is a powerful force that illuminates our lives with nourishing warmth, but that powerful force, when strongly aspected with the planet of revolution (Uranus) and the planet of endings and new beginnings (Pluto) will likely reveal to us areas of our life where these different facets of ourselves require integration.

It’s human nature to avoid pain and seek pleasure, so when we are in a difficult time it’s tempting to hide out and wait until it’s over.  But if we utilize these intense cycles we can make tremendous progress in our personal growth.

Transiting Mars is in Gemini right now […]

More details on tonight’s eclipse

The lunar eclipse tonight will be one of the longest lasting eclipses in 100 years, lasting about 100 minutes. It will be visible in eastern South America, Africa, the Middle East, Europe, Southern or Southeast Asia, and Australia but will not be visible from North America.  It is thought that eclipses have a more powerful effect in the areas in which they can be seen with the naked eye, but I haven’t really noticed a corollation.

total lunar eclipse June 15

(.) The eclipse will begin when the earth’s shadow is cast on the Moon at about 2:22 pm Eastern on June 15th/18:23 Universal Time (UT).  The total eclipse begins 3:23 Eastern/19:23 UT with the maximum eclipse occurring at 4:22 Eastern/20:12 UT.  The entire event will conclude at around 6:02 pm Eastern/22:02 UT.

Many of you have written me asking what to expect from the eclipse, and the truth is there is no way to predict this.  If your chart is individually affected because you have planets between 20 and 28 degrees of the mutable signs (Gemini, Sagittarius, Virgo or Pisces), or if you have a strongly placed Moon or an emphasis in Cancer and are therefore more sensitized to lunar events, you may feel as though something is erupting into consciousness.  You may be inspired to make a major change, or that something in your life is completed.

I believe it’s most helpful to simply observe your experience rather than anticipate it – that way you will be best prepared to greet any experience that opens up within you.  Eclipses often reveal something which has been hidden or which we have kept buried within us, so there is an opportunity for a greater awakening as well.

Sagittarius lunar eclipse and Full Moon, June 15 2011

Midsummer Full Moon

The energy for tomorrow’s lunar eclipse is starting to build, and it’s likely to have a profound effect on many of us. The eclipse will peak at the moment of the Full Moon at 4:14 pm Eastern.

This is a Full Moon in Sagittarius, the sign that represents our search for meaning. Sagittarius describes the Truth that we create for ourselves, and the urge for expansion and adventure that drives us in search for that Truth. The Gemini Sun opposes the Sagittarius Moon, urging us to integrate the Gemini/Sagittarius polarity of knowledge and learning. In Gemini we learn with an open mind; in Sagittarius we seek understanding and discrimination between that which is true and that which is not true. Gemini opens us to new experiences but lacks discrimination; Sagittarius creates more rigid ideology but learns discernment. Neither is better than the other, but the two require balance.

A conjunction of Mercury, Gemini’s ruler, to the Gemini Sun will weigh the balance heavily in Gemini’s favor, activating the mind to be curious and wide awake, processing our life’s experiences through the realm of thoughts and ideas.  This can take us away from the emotional heart where wisdom can settle and become integrated into our life, and a conjunction of Chiron to Neptune in the eclipse chart suggests that there is still soul work to be done.

This eclipse is a powerful one as the Sun and Moon are only one degree from a conjunction to the nodes of the Moon.  The lunar nodes are not planetary bodies but are points in the sky where the Moon crosses the apparent path of the Sun from our earthly perspective.  The nodes are connected with our evolutionary progress […]

Summer eclipse season is coming

Solar eclipse 2011, lunar eclipse 2011

. Solar and lunar eclipses occur when the Moon is either full (opposite the Sun) or “new” (conjunct the Sun), and one of the lunar nodes is located within 15 degrees of a conjunction to the Moon.  As you’ve probably heard me say before, the astrological impact of an eclipse comes from the presence of the lunar nodes.

The nodes of the Moon are points in the sky where the Moon crosses the path of the Sun as it is observed from Earth.  They are not actual astronomical bodies, but instead serve as signposts to show us where we have come from and what we need to leave behind (South, or descending Node) and the direction in which our soul is taking us (North, or ascending Node).  The Nodes represent the crossroads between the Soul (Moon) and the Spirit (Sun) with the physical incarnation (Earth).  Powerful stuff!

Typically there are two pairs of eclipses in a year, with two eclipses in each pair.  This summer brings three separate eclipses:

  • Solar eclipse June 1st at 11 Gemini
  • Lunar eclipse June 15th at 24 Sagittarius
  • Solar eclipse July 1st at 9 Cancer

The last time there were three eclipses in the summer was 2009 and you can read more about that here.

Although eclipses have been feared for thousands of years, unless you follow Vedic principles there is no need to fear an eclipse period.  Eclipses tend to reveal and expose aspects of our lives which are hidden and which need to be brought into the conscious realm in order for us to develop and progress.  This isn’t always fun, but the end result is worth any momentary […]

Scorpio Full Moon, May 17 2011: Becoming whole

Scorpio Full Moon May 17The Moon is full in Scorpio on May 17th at 7:09 am EDT, 11:09 am GMT, meaning that the Scorpio Moon will be exactly opposite the Sun in Taurus at that time.  The Full Moon is the peak of the lunar cycle: the point at which the Moon reaches its fullness and prepares for the waning phase of the cycle.  That point of fullness shows the Moon at the peak of her power.

The astrological Moon represents our emotions and describes the way we feel about things, but it is so much more complex than this.  The Moon is the inner child; it describes our fear of the unknown and tells where we retreat to safety.  The Moon is feminine in nature: changeable, powerful in its mystery, and comforting in its brilliance.  The waxing Moon represents the maiden in the first flush of beauty; the waning Moon represents the aging crone in her wisdom and power.  The Full Moon represents the comfort of the mother, and when we observe the Full Moon in the sky we often feel more connected to the essence of the Moon than at other times of the cycle.  We call her “Luna” – we acknowledge her power.

Scorpio is a fixed water sign – it is emotional but it is also powerful.  The fixed signs stand firm and unyielding, persistent and often stubborn and resistant to change.  Scorpio’s traditional ruler is Mars, so it is a fiery water sign which requires the courage (Mars) to face the demons of the darkness below.  Scorpio’s modern ruler is Pluto, Lord of the Underworld.  You can see how in Scorpio we must take the courage of Mars so that we can follow […]
