Fall into the drama of the Equinox Aries Full Moon, September 24th

Aries New MoonAries is the first sign of the zodiac – the sign of action, initiation, adventure, independence and courage.  Ruled by Mars, Aries has an aggressive force but it is a force for self-expression and self-awareness.  When the Moon is in Aries, we find ourselves willing to face our fears and inspired to break through the barriers that keep us from blazing the trail of our highest desires.

As in every Full Moon, this Aries Full Moon is opposite the Libra Sun, setting the Aries focus of initiating something new to satisfy ourselves against the Libran need to placate and please in order to achieve balance and harmony.  When the Moon is full, the lunar light (in this case Aries) obscures the light of the sun (in this case Libra), strengthening the Aries force to assert our personal will into the world.  This Full Moon is just one degree away from the equinox point which intensifies its power, but also amplifies the potential of our dreams, intentions and desires to create real magic.

This is a highly dynamic Full Moon as it is chock full of planetary aspects.  In this case Chiron’s wounding and healing energies are strongly connected to the Sun and the Moon so we are likely to experience an eruption of old emotional hurts and the clearing out of psychic debris.  Saturn (tests and challenges) forces us to face realities that may or may not be pleasant but must be dealt with.  Uranus (radical change) applies the pressure of dissatisfaction to keep us from becoming too comfortable.  Mercury (mind and communication) is scrambled by the emotionality of the Moon and overwhelmed by the light of the Sun, making rational thinking more difficult.

With this much planetary juju, […]

New Moon in Virgo, September 9 2018: When dreams collide with reality

Virgo New Moon.  At the Virgo New Moon we are typically granted an opportunity for a new beginning to organize our lives.  Virgo is the sign most concerned with creating order out of chaos, and in my world when the Moon is in Virgo I am always inspired to clean and organize my home.  Under the influence of Virgo we are suddenly more aware of areas of our lives which need improvement, and we find it easier to make a plan to make that improvement happen.

The New Moon is the beginning of a new lunar cycle – it wipes the slate clean and gives us an opportunity to forge a new beginning.  At this time the Sun and Moon are aligned in the same sign, working together to fuse our conscious personality needs (Sun) with our subconscious instincts and emotions (Moon).  Under the sign of Virgo, areas of health and well-being are highlighted along with the more obvious focus on organization and cleanliness.  New Moons are auspicious times to create a new plan and to plant the seeds of our dreams so that they will soon flower at the Full Moon.

Virgo is a practical Earth sign, and is not overly concerned with fantasy or imagination.  Virgo requires a plan and a bulletpoint list rather than a romantic ideal or dream.  However this New Moon on September 9th, and remember the energies begin a few days before and linger for a few days afterwards, includes a stressful opposition of the Sun and Moon to Neptune.  Neptune is a transformational outer planet – it inspires us to leave the day to day mundane details of our lives behind and find the transcendence and bliss of […]

How to use summer’s final eclipse at the Leo New Moon

August 11 solar eclipse.  On August 11 we will experience the last in a series of three summer eclipses at the Leo New Moon.  This is not a particularly powerful eclipse astronomically as it is a partial eclipse.  It’s also not as powerful an eclipse astrologically since the lunar nodes, the points in the sky which turn a New Moon into a solar eclipse, will be thirteen degrees away from the lunation unlike the July 27th solar eclipse in which the nodes were very close to the Full Moon.

Still, this is a SuperMoon New Moon, just as the July 13th eclipse was a SuperMoon New Moon (™), meaning the Moon is closer to the earth than at other times.  This intensifies the qualities of the New Moon AND the solar eclipse as the lunar effect is more directly personal.

This Super New Moon is in Leo, the sign of the creative Self.  In a solar eclipse, the instincts and needs of the Moon eclipse, or overcome, the conscious motivations of the Sun.  However, both Sun and Moon are in the same sign, aligned and yoked together in partnership to assist us in forging a new beginning of the lunar cycle – in the case of Leo, a new beginning in finding the light and majesty of our True Selves.

Many aspects of our lives may have been stalled during the past few months with Mars in retrograde motion, followed by Mercury retrograde.  Mercury is lined up with the Sun and Moon at this eclipse, waking up the brain and the mind and helping us with improved communication and language skills. Proper use of the mental realm and communication is an […]

Planetary news this week! Mercury retrograde and a total lunar eclipse

lunar eclipse July 27.  Mercury is in its shadow period now, moving at a snails space as it prepares to turn retrograde.  (Most people know by know that Mercury doesn’t actually travel backwards, or retrograde but because we observe the motion of the planets from Earth they sometimes appear to move backwards from our perspective which we call retrograde motion.)   Mercury will be retrograde through August 18th.  Because Mercury rules communication, learning and communication equipment, anything started or implemented during Mercury retrograde periods MAY bring potential problems or glitches later on.

As someone who has observed this phenomenon for over 40 years, I can tell you that the current hysteria over Mercury retrograde that fills the Interwebs is way overblown.  It sells astrological news perhaps, but the number of people who write me in terror of making a move or even a small purchase during these periods makes me weep.

During the Mercury retrograde, we just need to exercise an additional level of care.  If you’re booking a flight for a trip, REview your flight arrangements a few times to be sure you haven’t made a mistake.  If you have to start a job, sign a contract, or buy a new car because your old one died, do your REsearch, REread the contract or documents to be sure they are clear.

Mercury retrograde periods are excellent for REvisiting a discussion which isn’t quite REsolved, or simply for taking time to REflect and REwind your life.  The waves of the ocean ebb and flow, and the retrograde periods are like the ebb tide, REturning us back to the ocean to REcharge and REplenish our life force.

It will likely help that Mercury is acting as a singleton planet during […]

Cancer Supermoon Eclipse! July 12, 2018

Cancer New MoonThe Cancer New Moon on the 12th is a Supermoon and a partial solar eclipse.  The term Supermoon (™ astrologer ) simply means that the Moon is at its closest point to the Earth.  When the Moon is full and a Supermoon it appears large in the sky.  When the Supermoon is a New Moon, we can’t see it at all because the light of the Sun obscures the Moon.  When the New Moon is an eclipse, the Sun is obscured as well.

The symbolism of an eclipse is connected to the Nodes of the Moon – points in the sky where the path of the Moon crosses the path of the Sun.  Because the lunar nodes are connected to fate and destiny, eclipses do often have a fated quality and a sense that something in the life is being exposed or released.

All New Moons, whether an eclipse or not, are a time of new beginnings.  The New Moon in Cancer seeks to connect us to our emotional roots – family, or the family that we create for ourselves.  We cannot master the world (Cancer’s opposite sign of Capricorn) until we connect deeply to our emotional heart and allow it to soften rather than build up a crusty shell that defends us from hurt but also prevents the flow of love.  This is one of the lessons of Cancer.

Another Cancerian lesson is that the past takes us to the future and cannot be avoided.  Our history is our present, and both can be transformed.

This is a partial eclipse visibly and pretty far from the lunar nodes so weaker astrologically –  but it is a powerful astrological event nonetheless.   The New Moon is exactly opposite Pluto, […]
