Lunar eclipse in Leo, February 10 2017: A fiery awakening

Eclipses are said to awaken something which has been hidden – to unmask and expose truth.  The eclipse in Leo demands that we look at the ways in which we express our ego (Leo) and purify these expressions so that they truly reflect the depths of who we are (Aquarius).  This dance between the development of the personal Self (Leo) and the more detached and reasoned way of looking at the world (Aquarius) is a tricky one.

Fortunately this eclipse features a Grand Trine in fire, stimulating a desire for change and action, that is part of a Kite formation that grounds itself into the Aquarius Sun.  Kites are powerful aspects for transformation – they take the harmonious flow of the trine and activate it with an opposition that provides tension and a boost of energy.  The Grand Trine features Saturn in Sagittarius for earthy stability, Uranus in Aries for awakening and inspiration, and the Leo Moon for heart opening and embrace of Self.  And the Aquarius Sun, opposite the Moon, locks in the Kite and opens the doorways to higher understanding.

In addition, Jupiter (optimism and faith) harmonizes in a trine to the Sun, showering blessings and general good feelings throughout the eclipse event.

This is not a powerful eclipse astrologically – the lunar nodes are in a different sign that the Sun and Moon which weakens the effect. Asronomically it is a “penumbral” eclipse as only some of the Sun’s light is blocked by the shadow of Earth on the lunar face.  But there is a lovely energy to this lunar event which will be available to us if we are open to it.

Aquarius New Moon January 27: Time for a new perspective

Aquarius new moon 2017The New Moon in Aquarius occurs on January 27th. Aquarius is the sign of social justice and rational thinking – it inspires us towards independence and innovation.  At the New Moon the Sun and Moon align to merge the conscious Self as represented by the Sun with the instinctive emotional patterns of the Moon.  This linking up of these two luminaries is the beginning of the lunar cycle – the Sun solarizes the Moon and infuses it with a new energy, symbolically offering us a new beginning ourselves. This is a time of new beginnings and a time when our new intentions can take hold, helping us to start anew.

Aquarius is an air sign – detached and concerned with matters of the intellect, Aquarius encourages us to see the world in a reasonable and rational way.  This perspective helps us towards a clearer vision of the world and a need for social justice and equality.  Aquarius is ruled by the planet Uranus – the lord of radical change and innovation, and an opposition (aspect of tension) between abundant Jupiter and Uranus is embedded in the chart and encourages greater expansion (Jupiter) of our ideals (Uranus) and new ways of looking at the world and new patterns of living.  A harmonious trine from Saturn (strong foundation) enables us to construct these new patterns in ways that will enhance our lives.

The airiness of the New Moon combines with the fact that four planets are in Pisces which is a very watery sign – this helps us to integrate the intellectual brilliance of the Aquarian influence with the sensitivity and imagination of Pisces.

Creativity abounds under this New Moon, but a challenging Venus aspect (Venus is sandwiched between Chiron and Mars) will put stress on our relationships and interactions with others.  Hurt feelings (Chiron) and disagreements (Mars) are likely if we turn our attention away from our own individual aspirations and endeavors, if only for a few days.

The Aquarius New Moon allows us to see our world through new eyes and breathe fresh life into all of our endeavors.  Enjoy!

Cancerian Full Moon, January 12th: Balance, stability and Magic

Cancer Full Moon January 2017As we approach the Cancer Full Moon on January 12th, a harmonious Mars cycle helps to energize us and shake off inertia.  We are inspired now for transformation and are likely to feel more alive and aware which will help us to find greater balance during this lunar time where much goes on beyond the superficial level of daily consciousness.

Full Moons always include some tension since the Sun in Capricorn with its focus on practicality and the ends justifying the means, is exactly opposite the Moon in Cancer, inspiring emotional sensitivity and connection to tribe, pulling us in both directions and requiring us to find a way to integrate the opposite signs.  Cancer is the Moon’s own sign which intensifies this lunar quality of shifting moods and instinctive reaction.

Creating even greater tension is an exact Grand Cross with Jupiter and Uranus as well as the Sun and Moon.  Grand Crosses carry a tremendous amount of power in the tension that they bring to bear. They aren’t always comfortable, but this will be a powerful Full Moon that is full of magic. Any hidden restlessness or longing for freedom will erupt under this Full Moon which demands that we find balance between the emotional pull of our inner world (Cancer) and our need to find stability in the outer world (Capricorn).

This Full Moon asks us to open up our hearts to love and magic while keeping our feet firmly planted in the structural reality of the world around us, and to prioritize stability while exploring the nether regions of the psyche without becoming lost in either dimension.

The effect of a Full Moon lasts for about three days, and then we have a couple of stressful Mars aspects from the 16th-20th that could bring up an old wound which we have been trying to ignore and put the brakes on our plans.  These few days may be a bit frustrating and it will be important not to become discouraged.  Wait for clarity to come – it will!

Sagittarius New Moon, November 29: A new look at your future

55615088 - bright blue sky with clouds and new moonWith the Sun and Moon aligned in Sagittarius, we begin a new chapter in the lunar wheel and there is an opportunity for expansion and greater knowledge as we expand our idea of what is possible.  Sagittarius is the adventurer – the seeker of freedom and the one who breaks through limitations and artificially enforced boundaries to find true liberation and a path of higher knowledge.

The Sagittarius New Moon gives all of us an opportunity to open up to this energy – to learn to seek the possible rather than the familiar and expected.  Under the Sagittarius New Moon our minds are blown wide open so that we can take in a higher level of understanding about the world around us.

This New Moon features the asteroid Juno (representing commitment and requirements of society) aligning with the Sun and Moon, integrating our duties and responsibilities to family and loved ones with the freedom loving journeys of Sagittarius.  I imagine we will see a number of engagements occur at this New Moon!

Venus (relationships) is also featured prominently in the chart for this New Moon and any intentions that you create for this lunar cycle will want to include a focus on your interpersonal connections.  “What can I do to create more harmony in my relationships and still retain my individuality” is a good question to ask at this New Moon. Don’t expect to achieve instant clarity, however, a challenging aspect from mystical Neptune will blur both the questions and the answers at the New Moon and a few days beyond.  However, the information that you uncover will have merged with your conscious mind and will emerge when you are ready for it.

This is a period of great transition – not only is Uranus (radical change) conjunct Eris (goddess of discord), but we are in the final throes of the Uranus/Pluto square that has created so much disruption over the past eight years.  This Sagittarius New Moon is the ideal time to let go of the hopes and dreams that have not served you well, and see a clearer vision of your new and improved future.

The November 14th Supermoon in Taurus – Building a solid foundation

Taurus Supermoon November 14The concept of the Supermoon, originally coined by astrologer , has reached the mainstream as NASA calls this the biggest Supermoon since 1948.  A Full Moon or New Moon is called a Supermoon when it is at its closest to the Earth .  We don’t see the New Moon, of course, but the Full Moon appears larger and its astrological influence is stronger during a Supermoon than at other times, with higher tides and often extreme weather incidents.

Richard himself thinks that this is being overblown in the news:

The media have made a pretty big deal over this, but the truth is that the perigee (closest approach to Earth) for the November 14 occurs when the Moon is 356,511 kilometers away from our home planet. That’s only 1,348 km. closer than last month’s (October 16) SuperMoon; and only 66 km. (41 mi.) closer than the closest SuperMoon of 2011. This is really gilding the lily!

In any case, this Full Moon falls in the sign of Taurus – the sign of the Earth itself.

Taurus is the earthiest of all of the earth signs – it is a fixed sign so it encourages stability and perseverance, but is also stubborn and unyielding.  As an earth sign, Taurus is concerned with practical matters and physical comfort.  Sensual experiences of food and touch are important for Taurus, and for all of us under the Taurus Full Moon.

When the Moon is full in Taurus, the Scorpio Sun is exactly opposite the Moon.  Full Moons are the apex of the lunar cycle, and the opposition  (180 degree) aspect requires integration of polar opposites.  Where Taurus longs for peace and comfort, Scorpio demands intensity and passionate involvement.  Where Taurus seeks security, Scorpio is an emotional risk-taker.  It is this tension that creates the emotionality that Full Moons are famous for.

This is a time for grounding and finding comfort in the senses and the beauty of the natural world.  Neptune (mystical awareness) is aligned with the South Node of the past, suggesting a spiritual opening to teach and bring new awareness.  The Black Moon Lilith (dark feminine) is aligned with the Sun, bringing out the rage against the patriarchy, and in a conflicting square to Pallas (higher wisdom).  Under this influence we must release the dark emotionality of Lilith before the wisdom of Pallas can guide us into the light.

A harmonious Chiron influence will facilitate the healing and letting go of any drama that erupts under this Full Moon.  The flow of breath opens up the heart for emotional healing, and the Taurus Moon bestows a gentle grounding influence making this the perfect time to for release and rebalancing.
