Mercury Retrograde and the New Moon

You may have already noticed its effects: missed appointments, confusion over details, miscommunication. Telephone equipment stops working, email goes down. Websites aren’t working. We think we told someone 2:00, they are waiting for us at 1:00.

When Mercury is retrograde our focus is more inward than usual, causing us to miss important details in the outer world. I have long suspected that the effects of Mercury retrograde are due more to this factor of human error than actual machinery problems. The to determine whether Mercury Retrograde actually caused the problems that those of us who follow the planets swear by. Their research uncovered a lack of statistical correlation between Mercury Rx periods and automobile accidents and stoplight malfunctions, train delays, late flights, and lost baggage.

This is just one study in one city, and most people have their own tales of Mercury Retrograde gone bad (see a day in my own life as captured here). But let’s not make this one more thing to bring fear into our lives. Mercury retrograde periods can be very productive for many things: they are excellent times for completing old projects (especially if they were begun when Mercury was retrograde!) and for reconnecting with old friends. When Mercury is retrograde our minds are working a little differently than they usually do, and we may find ourselves with greater access to creativity and insight. These are wonderful times for spiritual retreat, for connecting the body with the mind in Tai Chi or yoga, or for writing of any kind.

Although it is optimal to begin new projects when Mercury is direct, don’t despair if you have a big presentation or contract that must be signed when Mercury is retrograde. Be alert, watch for the small details. Be […]

Full Moons gain respect!

A police inspector in Sussex England recently discovered solid evidence for a link between criminal behavior and full moons: “I compared a graph of full moons and a graph of last year’s violent crimes and there is a trend.” Full moons and paydays were the two major links to an increase in aggressive behavior.

Something we who watch the moon have known for quite some time!

Full Moon tomorrow and the Ceres/Pluto trine

Tomorrow’s Full Moon occurs at 9:05 pm EDT and brings with it a flood of positive energy. The Moon is full in Sagittarius, the sign of expansion, adventure and optimism. During the Full Moon the solar light of conscious awareness illuminates the instinctive depths of our lunar experience, and in Sagittarius our own lunar depths are lit up with a bright fire of knowledge and awareness. Sagittarius loves a good party, and the Sagittarius Full Moon is a time of celebration.

Mars adds a burst of energy: finding its fullest expression in Aries, the sign which it rules, it trines the Sun/Jupiter conjunction and showers us with courage and inspiration. has synchronistically pulled the Knight of Wands card for this week, the perfect metaphor for the Mars/Jupiter combination:

The Knight of Wands is spontaneous, hot-headed, charismatic, quick to laugh or anger, and a creative blaze of activity. He is often charming, and pulsing with sexual energy. But he is also extremely loyal to his, understandably, huge circle of friends. While he can be impulsive and unpredictable, he takes his honor and integrity absolutely to heart, and is a true heroic figure.

Expanding the party is a conjunction of the Moon to Jupiter, the ruling planet of Sagittarius. Despite the broader planetary influences which are challenging us (see below), Jupiter and Sagittarius look for the higher path to freedom. Preferring to ignore the darkness, for the next few days we have a clear sightline to the light at the end of the tunnel. This could be a danger, however, because the opposition of the Full Moon (Sun opp Moon) is exactly square to the lunar nodes forming a lunar Grand Cross. The north node and south node of the lunar path are signposts pointing […]

New Moon coming up!

The New Moon in Taurus occurs May 16 at 3:28 pm EST. Taurus craves nothing more than peace and stability, and a square from Neptune to the New Moon suggests that our fantasies and ideals (Neptune) exceed our acquisitive grasp (Moon). Neptune opens up our spirits to the creative force of divine inspiration and brings music and the arts, but the square reveals the possibility for too much of a good thing and the likelihood of losing oneself in one’s imagination. In Taurus we are more easily able to ground our imagination and inspiration into more solid forms of art and life.

New Moons are usually excellent times to begin new projects; in Taurus these new projects will want to satisfy the Taurean longing for beauty in life as well as in possessions and property. The Taurus New Moon centers our focus on abundance and prosperity – fertility and fecundity are emphasized now. This is not a great time for travel or adventure, but rather to bloom where we are planted.

Scorpio Full Moon! And other planetary news

From Skywatch for May, posted this morning:

There are two Full Moons in May, the first of which is on May 2 at 6:10 am EST in Scorpio. Scorpio is the sign of intensity and passion, the impulse that pulls us into the deepest part of our soul and forces us to experience life in the most profound way possible. The Full Moon occurs when the Moon opposes the Sun, and although the Sun illuminates the Moon it is the lunar consciousness that prevails. Emotions run higher during the Full Moon, and we have greater access to the underworld of our psyche with the Full Moon in Scorpio.

This Full Moon incorporates a conjunction of Mercury to the Sun, suggesting that our emotions will be at odds with our thoughts and mental functioning during this period. There is also a square to Chiron which opens up doorways for old wounds that we thought were healed long ago to surface and remind us that we are not yet completely healed. A wide square to the Full Moon opposition from Saturn hints that we may find ourselves feeling isolated and alone as we face the wounds from our past that Chiron presents. This is a good time for introspection and personal work, and the inclusion of Mercury suggests that journaling or talking to a friend can be quite productive now.

Mercury is approaching a square to Chiron now that culminates on May 4 and we are likely to continue feeling the effects of Chiron’s efforts to promote healing of our mental faculties by clearing out the old wounds that we harbor within us. Fortunately, harmonious aspects from Mercury to Saturn and Uranus aid us in achieving stability (Saturn) and offering insights (Uranus) that […]
