More on the death of David Carradine

You read it here first: When I put up the post on Thursday afternoon about Carradine’s death, speculating that the likely cause of Carradine’s death was autoerotic asphyxiation, a Google search turned up no other articles on this topic.  Now the details of Carradine’s tragic death  and there is no doubt that this was indeed the cause of his death.

When there is a fascination with the dark side of sexuality, we usually find a strong Pluto component to the chart.  Pluto is the planet of death, rebirth and transformation, but it also has to do with intensity and compulsion and a fascination with the dark side of life.  Carradine had a nearly exact opposition of Pluto to Venus in his , linking that compulsive nature (Pluto) to his relationships and patterns of relating to others. Venus/Pluto combinations can be problematic for relationships, and Carradine was married five times.

While Venus/Pluto combinations are nearly always difficult to some degree, they do NOT manifest the same way for everyone.  The variables in human behavior makes astrology a less-than-exact science, and there are plenty of people with these combinations who go on to lead a healthy and happy life.  I myself have Venus in Scorpio square Pluto, as I told someone in the comments section, and I have never been at all interested in this kind of darkness.  It’s always easier to go back and demonstrate correspondences between the chart and behavior than to predict exactly how a planetary system will operate.  So if your loved one has this in their chart, do NOT worry that they will die in a closet in Bangkok.

We don’t know the exact position of the Moon because we don’t know Carradine’s time of birth, but it was definitely in range to […]

David Carradine found dead

David Carradine was found dead today in his hotel room in Bangkok where he was shooting his latest film “Stretch.”  Carradine was found naked with a rope around his deck.  He was 72.

The minute I heard about this, intuitively I felt that this was a case of erotic asphyxiation, and now the BBC is reporting that Carradine was found with a curtain rope around his neck “and other parts of his body.”  TMZ claims that Carradine’s rep says that the death was 100% accidental, and I can’t think of too many ways that someone dies accidentally with a rope around their neck.

Carradine (born 12/8/36, time unknown, Hollywood CA) had a very difficult astrological chart, including a Grand Cross including the Sun, Saturn, Neptune and Chiron.  The Sun represents our essential Self and our personal quest, and when challenged by these three major players (Saturn, Neptune and Chiron) there is some damage to the Self that needs to be healed over time.  David Carradine was one of the hardest working actors in Hollywood, with over 200 film and TV appearances to his credit which is typical of someone with a strong Saturn component.

I was not able to find any particularly significant planetary event to mark Carradine’s death which is unusual.  Transiting Saturn had been setting off this Grand Cross beginning last fall, and was sitting nearly exactly opposite Saturn in the chart and square to the Sun when this event occurred so perhaps he was feeling exceptionally empty inside and looking for excitement.  His progressed Sun had just entered Pisces which has a powerful imagination and longing for an experience that is deeper and more transcendent.  But Saturn transits will test any effort to escape one’s reality.

I’ll be watching for the […]

Susan Boyle: The meltdown and her next chapter

Susan BoyleThe meteoric rise of Susan Boyle has been like a fabulous firework which rockets into the sky out of nowhere, explodes itself across the heavens, and then falls to earth again forever changed.

You can read more about Susan’s birthchart and astrological profile here, and about how the current planetary cycles affected her meteoric rise.

Over the past week there were signs of trouble; stories of meltdowns and of Susan being rushed to a safe house where the stress wouldn’t overwhelm her ability to compete in the final round of Britain’s Got Talent  last night.  As mentioned in my profile of Susan, she has a sensitive opposition between the Sun (conscious mind) and the Moon (emotional sensitivity) which shows a tendency to be somewhat reactive emotionally. This is exacerbated by a square of Mars (aggression)  to the Moon and Sun, especially because her Mars is in the nurturing sign of Cancer where its aggressive instinct does not get a strong outlet.  There is often a pattern of resentment and built-up anger that results.  This is particularly true for someone like Susan with an Aries Sun, ruled by Mars, who needs to be able to clearly express that inner aggression.  This is not the chart of someone who responds well to stress.

At the time of these meltdowns Susan was experiencing a transit of Mars over her Venus. Venus describes the way we interact with others, and Mars of course expresses our aggression and our ability to defend ourselves, so when Mars hit her Venus exactly on May 27, there was an eruption.

The Midheaven is the point in the chart that describes our career and public life, and in the progressed chart (the evolving chart that shows how our career life changes) […]

The 27 Club and the Progressed Lunar Return

Progressed lunar returnI found this article in a link from Astrococktail about the frequency of musicians who have been found dead at age 27.  Most of us know about the potentially problematic experiences of the Saturn Return at age 28, but this was a connection I had not thought much about.

Before each Saturn Return we all experience something called the Progressed Lunar Return which occurs when the Progressed Moon returns to its place in the natal chart.  (The progressed chart marks the passage of time and the evolution of the natal chart as we age and evolve.)  The Progressed Moon takes 27-28 years to complete the cycle around the natal chart, and it generally marks an opening of the emotional body that can be exhilarating or painful, depending on the chart and the way the individual handles challenges.  The Progressed Lunar Return prepares us for the Saturn Return the following year.

Here are just a few examples of the musicians in the

Brian Jones (2/28/42, time unknown), original member of the Rolling Stones, died July 3, 1969 by drowning.  His natal Moon was extremely stressed by a conjunction of Saturn and Chiron, and at the time of his death transiting Saturn was exactly square to that difficult triple conjunction that included his natal Moon.

Jimi Hendrix died about six months after his Progressed Lunar Return, with transiting Saturn was crossing the IC of his chart (the cusp of the Fourth House which in some systems is connected to death).  The Moon in Hendrix’s chart was not particularly stressed, conjuncting Jupiter which typically confers a positive and confident attitude, but that Moon/Jupiter conjunction made an exact square to the Midheaven of his chart and it is likely that his career (Midheaven) pulled […]

Kris Allen and Adam Lambert: the New American Idols

Kris AllenKris Allen sped ahead of the pack last night to take home the American Idol crown in a surprise upset over Adam Lambert, who had been expected to win.  Allen’s surprising victory echoed last year’s surprise win by David Cook (profiled by me in this earlier article).

Kris has an interesting astrological chart that should blow away a few concepts.  First of all, five planets are retrograde in his chart, a phenomenon that is relatively rare but which has traditionally been associated with bad luck and an inability to achieve one’s goals.  While it’s true that retrograde planets can make it more difficult to move forward in one’s life because we are always being pulled back into the past, a strong intention and focus can overcome any planetary difficulty in the birthchart.

Kris has the Sun in Cancer, the sign of family ties and caring for others, and it opposes Neptune almost exactly.  Neptune/Sun aspects are often connected to an affinity for music and sometimes, depending on the rest of the chart, musical talent  (David Cook has a Sun/Neptune conjunction). When Neptune and the Sun combine there is also usually a strong spiritual component in the life.

With the Sun in shy Cancer and a Neptune/Sun opposition which can make it difficult to forge a strong identity, we would not have expected Kris to be someone who seeks the limelight.  His Leo Moon inspires a craving for fame and recognition, and to be celebrated for his talents, but it is squared by Saturn which inhibits him from seeking this kind of recognition.  Saturn also opposes Venus, which enhances this sense of inhibition and shyness.  But according to the judges, it was just that low-key sensitivity that won him the American Idol […]
