The 27 Club and the Progressed Lunar Return

Progressed lunar returnI found this article in a link from Astrococktail about the frequency of musicians who have been found dead at age 27.  Most of us know about the potentially problematic experiences of the Saturn Return at age 28, but this was a connection I had not thought much about.

Before each Saturn Return we all experience something called the Progressed Lunar Return which occurs when the Progressed Moon returns to its place in the natal chart.  (The progressed chart marks the passage of time and the evolution of the natal chart as we age and evolve.)  The Progressed Moon takes 27-28 years to complete the cycle around the natal chart, and it generally marks an opening of the emotional body that can be exhilarating or painful, depending on the chart and the way the individual handles challenges.  The Progressed Lunar Return prepares us for the Saturn Return the following year.

Here are just a few examples of the musicians in the

Brian Jones (2/28/42, time unknown), original member of the Rolling Stones, died July 3, 1969 by drowning.  His natal Moon was extremely stressed by a conjunction of Saturn and Chiron, and at the time of his death transiting Saturn was exactly square to that difficult triple conjunction that included his natal Moon.

Jimi Hendrix died about six months after his Progressed Lunar Return, with transiting Saturn was crossing the IC of his chart (the cusp of the Fourth House which in some systems is connected to death).  The Moon in Hendrix’s chart was not particularly stressed, conjuncting Jupiter which typically confers a positive and confident attitude, but that Moon/Jupiter conjunction made an exact square to the Midheaven of his chart and it is likely that his career (Midheaven) pulled […]

Kris Allen and Adam Lambert: the New American Idols

Kris AllenKris Allen sped ahead of the pack last night to take home the American Idol crown in a surprise upset over Adam Lambert, who had been expected to win.  Allen’s surprising victory echoed last year’s surprise win by David Cook (profiled by me in this earlier article).

Kris has an interesting astrological chart that should blow away a few concepts.  First of all, five planets are retrograde in his chart, a phenomenon that is relatively rare but which has traditionally been associated with bad luck and an inability to achieve one’s goals.  While it’s true that retrograde planets can make it more difficult to move forward in one’s life because we are always being pulled back into the past, a strong intention and focus can overcome any planetary difficulty in the birthchart.

Kris has the Sun in Cancer, the sign of family ties and caring for others, and it opposes Neptune almost exactly.  Neptune/Sun aspects are often connected to an affinity for music and sometimes, depending on the rest of the chart, musical talent  (David Cook has a Sun/Neptune conjunction). When Neptune and the Sun combine there is also usually a strong spiritual component in the life.

With the Sun in shy Cancer and a Neptune/Sun opposition which can make it difficult to forge a strong identity, we would not have expected Kris to be someone who seeks the limelight.  His Leo Moon inspires a craving for fame and recognition, and to be celebrated for his talents, but it is squared by Saturn which inhibits him from seeking this kind of recognition.  Saturn also opposes Venus, which enhances this sense of inhibition and shyness.  But according to the judges, it was just that low-key sensitivity that won him the American Idol […]

The astrology of Wanda Sykes: Did she really say that?

Wanda SykesWanda Sykes is an American comedian known for her sharp and blunt wit and was chosen to appear last week at the White House Correspondents Dinner.  Although she has been excoriated by many for her ruthless skewering of conservatives, her fans know that the Wanda Sykes that appeared at the dinner was a watered down version.  The real Wanda is armed with much sharper barbs and insults.

The birthchart of Wanda Sykes (born 3/7/1964, time unknown, Portsmouth VA) is very interesting.  Wanda has the Sun in Pisces, the sign of the shapeshifter.  Pisces is known to be sensitive and strongly spiritual, but their ability to adapt to every situation makes them excellent comedians and stage performers of all kinds.  Wanda’s Pisces Sun forms a harmonious trine to Neptune, the ruler of Pisces – an astrological “double whammy” that tells us that the Pisces/Neptune principle is very important in her chart.  The presence of Neptune inspires us to seek a higher purpose and a loftier goal, and to forge a deep connection to our true Self.

Wanda’s Sun is part of a stellium (big conjunction)  that includes Chiron, Mars and Mercury.  The presence of Chiron, reveals a deep insecurity and a struggle to define a sense of her Self.  The combination of Mars and Mercury explains her barbed (Mars) wit (Mercury) and a sharp  mind.  Mars also adds an impulsive element to the manner of speech (this is a quality shared by Joe Biden, who also has a Mars/Mercury conjunction).

When the Sun, Chiron and Mars combine there is typically a great deal of anger in the individual that stems from an inability (Chiron) to express and meet one’s needs (Mars).  But Wanda is more comfortable with her inner aggression because Jupiter, […]

Susan Boyle and the Zeitgeist of the Chiron/Neptune conjunction

The timing of the fervor over Susan Boyle has struck me, coinciding as it does with the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune which are now less than a degree apart.   who is an anthropologist at the University of St. Louis sums this up quite nicely:

Buried within the human psyche are feelings, yearnings, anxieties too deep for words, usually. Only sometimes do we see it in ourselves. Always it is something outside ourselves that touches us, somehow, where we feel most deeply. At such moments we remember that we are humans — not mere living creatures, but human beings, profoundly and deeply shaped by a moral sensibility so powerful that it breaks through our inhibitions; it can burst out, explode into public view, to our own astonishment. And sometimes that objective form — a person, an event, an object, a song — embodies deeply felt sensibilities for a lot of us at once, so that we discover how much we share in our private worlds, worlds otherwise inaccessible to anyone one else. It becomes a social event, so we can all rejoice, and weep, together.

This beautifully mirrors the effect of the conjunction of Chiron and Neptune.  Chiron presides over those feelings and anxieties that are too deep for words, and Neptune rules the yearning for the soul to experience something more transcendent than our ordinary lives.  In these pages we have discussed the pain and fear that have erupted with this conjunction, but the eruption of emotion that has resulted from the Susan Boyle video touches the very zeitgeist of our modern culture.

The superficiality of modern life (particularly over the past 15 years as Pluto transited through Sagittarius and brought with it the rise of celebrity journalism and Botox) […]

The astrology of singer Susan Boyle: Corrected birth date and time

Susan BoyleUpdated with new birth date and time.

The You Tube video of Susan Boyle’s audition for “Britain’s Got Talent” has become a sensation all over the world.  When an average person shoots from obscurity to international acclaim literally overnight, there is usually a very interesting astrological background.

Date of birth saga.  A birth date (June 15, 1961, time unknown, Blackburn, West Lothian, Scotland) was posted in a profile in the Sunday Times in the UK, but this was later disputed by the UK astrology website  who obtained the date of April 1, 1961 from the publicist at Britain’s Got Talent.  This date was confirmed by telephone by David Nicholson at Cainer who called the Registrar of birth records in Bathgate.  Marjorie Orr had a birth time of 9:50 am on her site, which she told me came from Caroline Gerard, a genealogist in Scotland, and this birth time was confirmed by Kathryn Cassidy (who also works for Cainer) this morning.

This has set up an interesting conundrum for astrologers because we really like the other chart – it fits perfectly with our idea of who Susan Boyle is.  But this is the pitfall of doing an astrological profile of celebrities about whom virtually nothing is known – they become nothing more than a hook for our own projections.  I find that the most surprising readings that I ever do are for acquaintances whom I know slightly.  I have an idea of who they are, and then when I do the chart it doesn’t fit with my concept of that person, but it fits exactly with who they really are..

So I have posted the new chart here, and have thrown away my fantasy of who I think Susan Boyle is.

Susan Boyle has the Sun in […]
