Kal Penn – the astrology of his sudden life change

Kal PennKal Penn, born Kalpen Modi April 23 1977 (time unknown), has been acting since the age of 21.  After a successful film career (he is best known for his role as Kumar in the Harold and Kumar movies) he landed a regular television gig on the program “House” where he has been a regular cast member since the fall of 2007.

Recently Kal made news when his character on House, Dr. Lawrence Kutner, committed suicide.  He immediately announced that he was taking on the role of Associate Director of the office of Public Liaison in the Obama administration.

Penn’s astrological chart (also known as the birthchart, or horoscope) shows that he was born with the Sun in Taurus, which was in close proximity (conjunct) Chiron, which is also known as the Wounded Healer.  This planetary combination shows that Penn is a person who cherishes stability in life and doesn’t like change (Taurus), but that he has had difficulty establishing a sense of his own identity (Chiron conjunct the Sun).  With the Sun conjunct Mercury (which with its mercurial nature lends itself to taking on other roles) he has a natural facility for acting, but he has an extremely serious side as well.

Saturn, the planet of hard work and discipline, forms a challenging aspect to Penn’s Sun which suggests that he puts a great deal of pressure on himself to be successful.  Saturn is in Leo, which reveals that he is uncomfortable with attention and fame, despite the news reports that claim that Penn quit the House gig out of an attack of egomania.

The Taurus Sun desires a comfortable life that is stable and secure, and acting certainly provides a good income when one has a steady television career. But the serious side of […]

Natasha Richardson has died

Natasha RIchardsonThe shocking death of actress Natasha Richardson after what appeared to be a minor head injury from a skiing accident has raised a lot of questions.  After refusing medical treatment twice, she flown first to a hospital in Montreal and then to a hospital in New York where she died of a blood clot compressing her brain.

There is a big debate among astrologers as to whether we can predict death using astrology, and if we can, whether we should.  We can look at  chart and her transits and progressions and see where a critical event would occur, but I doubt an astrologer would have taken any of these events to signify her death prior to the event.

At the time of Ms. Richardson’s accident, transiting Mars was exactly opposite Uranus in her chart, a common significator of accidents as the impatience of Mars bumps up against the rebellious disdain for rules of Uranus.  Her progressed Midheaven, representing her evolving destiny and purpose, was exactly conjunct Uranus at the same time, showing that this was a time of great importance in her life.  It would have been clear looking at this confluence of events that something very significant would occur in her life.

Another eerie coincidence was the return of Ms. Richardson’s progressed Saturn, which had turned retrograde back in 1985, was exactly conjunct her natal Saturn at the time of her death.  This “progressed Saturn return” is another significator for an event of importance but would not necessarily have alerted an astrologer to her death; it could just as easily have signified a period of great career success.

I usually look for Jupiter transits at the time of death, and there are some harmonious Jupiter transits at work […]

Lamar Odom is in Retrograde

… Coach Phil Jackson of the LA Lakers has used the retrograde turn of Venus last week to explain Lamar Odom’s poor performance:

At a loss for a conventional explanation for the inconsistencies that have defined Lamar Odom’s career, Coach Phil Jackson turned to astrology Monday to account for his mercurial forward’s mini-slump.

“More than anything else, Lamar is affected by the astrological sequences, and I know that Venus went into retrograde the other day,” Jackson deadpanned. “All of a sudden he started shooting his free throws with a dip and a bend, and it was like, where did that come out of? We tried to get him back on the straight and narrow in practice.”

I never realized Phil Jackson was an astrology aficionado, but I love that so many people now are talking about real astrology without shame!

By the way, I snuck a peek at Lamar Odom’s chart (born November 6, 1979, time unknown), and his performance problems stem more from the lineup in Aquarius forming a square to the conjunction of the Sun to Uranus in his chart and causing some surprising impulses that are throwing him off balance, than from Venus turning retrograde.

What’s eating Christian Bale?

Christian BaleChristian Bale, brilliant actor in the most recent Batman series, was in the news back in July of 2008 when it was reported that he “assaulted” his mother and sister (under English law an assault can be physical or verbal).  Now he is in the news again when audiotape of a violent rant just days before his arrest last summer against the director of photography for his new film Terminator Salvation was leaked to the press after being submitted to the film’s insurance company.

Unfortunately from an astrologer’s point of view, we don’t know the time of Christian Bale’s birth (January 30, 1974) because it is likely that Bale is experiencing planetary transits to the “angles” of his chart (the points that describe the way we relate to others and our career) that are defined by the moment of birth.  We also don’t know where his Moon is; if he was born before noon his Moon would be in Aries, and after noon it would be in Taurus.   But there is plenty of other information that we can glean from his chart to help to explain some of his behavior.

Christian Bale has the Sun in Aquarius, and he has a conjunction of Mercury to Jupiter in Aquarius as well.  I’ve been writing a lot about Aquarius in this column because for the past few months we have had a preponderance of planets in that sign. Aquarius is the sign of the inventor – of the eccentric, the renegade, and the fighter for social justice.  But Aquarius is exceptionally interesting in the chart of an individual because it is one of four signs with both an ancient and a modern ruler.  Its ancient ruler is Saturn, planet […]

Apple Inc News: Steve Jobs’ Mars Problem

Steve JobsSteve Jobs is the creative genius behind the Apple Computing brand.  After Jobs was forced out in 1985 the company floundered, reviving after he staged a takeover that brought him back as CEO.

t with the Sun in Pisces. Pisces is the sign of spirituality and transcending the boundaries of ordinary physical reality.  Pisces types are typically creative, inspirational, easygoing and meditative with a thirst for a spiritual experience.  They are also emotional and can be quite sensitive.  After dropping out of college, Jobs spent some time in 1974 backpacking through India, studying meditation and experimenting with psychedelic drugs.

Jupiter (optimism and confidence) is conjunct Uranus (innovation and radical behavior) in Jobs’ chart, signifying a person with a deeply restless nature, but also an innate ability to innovate and create.  Mars (the planet that defines how we assert our will and express our aggressive instinct) in his chart is in Aries, the sign which it rules.  That is an extremely forceful place for Mars to be; yet Jobs is a sensitive and easygoing Pisces.

Mars is afflicted in his chart: it is opposed by Neptune, the ruler of Pisces and a very watery planet – you know what happens when you pour a bucket of water (Neptune) over fire (Mars), the fire is likely to go out.  Mars is also in a challenging aspect to the Jupiter/Uranus combination, which shows that Jobs can have a very short fuse, but he may not, with his strongly Piscean nature, be able to release that fiery expression very easily.

It is said of Steve Jobs that he makes his own rules, which we can see in the Mars (drive) square to Jupiter/Uranus (radical behavior), and that […]
