An untimely death

Vphoto from

Ruslana Korshunova was a beautiful young woman who seemed to have everything going for her until she plunged to her death. Although friends said she appeared to be “on top of the world,” her web postings tell a different story, saying she felt lost and as if her heart was being “stomped all over.” Her death came two days before her twenty-first birthday. (Astrological chart here.)

One of the mysteries of astrological profiles is why two people with the same psychological dynamics will take very different roads. Perhaps it’s the environment they find themselves in; perhaps they make different choices. In any event, although we can see the seeds of difficulty in Rusiana’s chart it presented challenges that were no more difficult than those faced by many of us.

Ruslana was born with the Sun in Cancer – exceptionally sensitive and emotional, family would have been very important to her. Cancer is the sign that rules our family connections and geneaological roots, and there is often a strong affiliation to the tribal identity. Mercury was in Cancer in her chart, as was Mars, so the Cancerian influence was very strong. Ruslana was sending money home to her family in Kazakhstan. She was drafted into the fashion industry after a modeling agency spotted her photo in a magazine on the Kazakh club scene at the age of 15. It’s hard to imagine that she did not miss her family, no matter how glamourous her life became.

We don’t know Ruslana’s time of birth so we can’t pinpoint her rising sign which would tell us more about the way she lived her life, but we know that she had the Moon in Virgo, which is not comfortable with any big show […]

And now George Carlin…

Another great journalist has died: George Carlin succumbed to a heart attack yesterday at the age of 71.

I expected to see a strong Uranus component to since he was so irreverent and iconoclastic, and there is a wide conjunction of Uranus to a Sun/Mercury conjunction in Taurus. The combination of the Sun and Mercury indicates a brilliant mind with fixed ideas, and the presence of Uranus there illustrates the dislike of conventional thinking which is contrary to the Taurus nature. There is also an exact Chiron/Moon conjunction which suggests a deep and painful wound at the heart level. We never know the deepest emotional workings of public figures, but most comedians are driven by pain to find humor in their situations and this was likely true of George Carlin. Sadly, his wife of nearly 40 years died in 1997 and he was subsequently treated for drug and alcohol addiction.

His irreverence was never as biting as when directed at religion, and this is not surprising considering an exact opposition in his chart between Jupiter (shared theologies) and Pluto (compulsion and transformation). He often said he prayed to Joe Pesci instead of to God, and invented the Frisbeetarian religion.

At the time of his death transiting Uranus was making an exact square to the Chiron/Moon conjunction in his chart. I suspect that Chiron was ready to leave this earth and Uranus provided the liberating force for him to make his exit.

along with videos. Astrotheme has a comprehensive bio along with the chart. He will be greatly missed by those of us who recognize that the Emperor […]

Heath Ledger: A posthumous genius

It adds fuel to the tragedy of Heath Ledger’s early demise that his work in the latest Batman film is garnering reviews that call him the greatest actor of his generation. Although his death was considered accidental, the quantity of (legal) pharmaceutical drugs in his body indicate a troubled soul desperate for relief.

Heath Ledger was determined to win fame through serious acting and not by capitalizing on his “pretty boy” looks. He won an Oscar nomination for his breakthrough performance in Brokeback Mountain, and won critical acclaim in his character performances in other films. He dated Naomi Watts for two years before apparently settling down with Michelle Willliams when their baby was born in 2005. They ended their relationship in 2007 and were often photographed by paparazzi in various arguments.

Although Ledger had a fiery Aries Sun, his astrological chart shows that he was an extremely sensitive individual. His Moon (emotional needs and nature) was in the sign of Cancer which rules emotions and moods. Mars (drive and aggressive instinct) was in Pisces where it tends to blur our desires and make it difficult to achieve them, and so was Mercury (mental functions) which shows an extremely empathic and delicate individual.

Both of these planets have been stressed by cycles Pluto over the past two years, creating upheaval in his life and likely dredging up (Pluto rules the Underworld of the psyche) old emotions and thoughts that were problematic. Venus in Ledger’s chart was also in Pisces, showing that he was a romantic and yearned for relationships (Venus) where he could connect totally with his mate. However, Venus was opposite the planet Saturn which can be cold and critical, indicating that he never felt that he was good enough for his […]

The New American Idol: David Cook

I confess I have never watched American Idol, but I happened to see a bit about this on the news and was struck by this latest winner. His sensitivity and humility is evident, and very Neptunian so I was not surprised to see Neptune conjunct the Sun in his chart.

David Cook is the latest American Idol winner, and already he has set impressive records, including the casting of 97 million votes and the breaking of the record for most text messages, and the receipt of an apology from Simon Cowell. His sensitivity and talent has been noted by fans and music critics alike. The clips from American Idol are cover pieces, but to see the real guy check out his original work:

Cook fell into the show by accident, going to the auditions to support his brother and trying out at the last minute. Previous to his American Idol journey he was songwriter and lead singer for the band Axium for six years.

We’ll be hearing a lot more from David Cook as his career begins to take off, but let’s see what his astrological chart has to say about him.

David is has a Sagittarius Sun, which describes his optimistic and positive viewpoint(he has been quoted as saying that being happy is his main goal in life). Sagittarius craves adventure and experiences that are big and expansive, and longs to know the Truth about life. David’s creativity, generosity and sensitivity comes from a conjunction of his Sun to Neptune which is the planet of compassion and transcendence and reveals a romantic bent as well as artistic talents. This Neptune conjunction can put a damper on David’s natural confidence and make it more difficult for him to be clear about his […]

Kate Hudson and Owen Wilson – off again

I really like these two together, and I can relate to Owen Wilson’s commitment conflicts and the despair over his failed relationships that put him in the hospital last summer after a failed suicide attempt. So I find myself following their saga with a great deal of interest and sadness. Recently the two had reconciled, and just last week Kate was spotted wearing an engagement ring, but new reports say that they have broken up once again.

Two short months ago, with reports of their reconciliation circulating, I wrote:

Last year when Owen attempted suicide transiting Saturn (the planet which tests us and creates limitations to challenge us and encourage us to become stronger) was in a stressful aspect to the Sun/Neptune conjunction in Owen’s chart. Saturn cycles often bring depression and show us our limitations and where we are not measuring up. Ideally this motivates us to work harder for change and growth, but sometimes it pushes people into despair as we saw with Owen at that time.

Kate has had her own challenging cycles, including a transit of Pluto (death and rebirth) over Venus in her chart (relationships) which witnessed the end of her marriage. She is now going through the famous “Saturn Return,” the time at age 28-30 when Saturn in the sky returns to its place in our birthchart and we are forced to accept the responsibilities of our life and move into adulthood. Kate’s Saturn Return began back in November and she is currently in the second phsae now. During the Saturn Return we often crave stability and commitment, and this can be one of the most productive times of our life […]
