Time Magazine’s Person of the Year: The Protester

Time person of the year 2011Astrologers everywhere are nodding their head.  Uranus in Aries square Pluto – Time Magazine names “The Protester” the person of the year.  Uranus: rebellion and radical change, in Aries: initiation and action.  Squaring Pluto, power, endings and transformation; in Capricorn, the structures upon which we build our lives such as governments and corporations.

It’s so obvious!

Except to Time Magazine:

No one could have known that when a Tunisian fruit vendor set himself on fire in a public square, it would incite protests that would topple dictators and start a global wave of dissent. In 2011, protesters didn’t just voice their complaints; they changed the world.

And also re-read my article from February of last year about the spread of global protest in which I wrote:

These protests are just the beginning of what will become a firestorm of political resistance over the next year as Uranus, planet of revolution, squares off against Pluto, planet of power and control.  They were inspired by the return of Jupiter into Aries and the simultaneously square of Jupiter to Pluto in Capricorn, which mainlined confidence (Jupiter) and courage (Aries) into the souls of individuals who were fed up with the control (Pluto) of autocratic governments (Capricorn).

This is just the beginning of the excitement.  Uranus and Pluto have only come within a degree of their exact square which culminates next summer.  THEN the fun will really start!

A Brief Uranus/Pluto history

Uranus square PlutoUranus in Aries began a four-year cycle of a challenging square to Pluto and Capricorn this summer when the two came within one degree of an exact alignment.  Squares are 90 degree aspects between two planets that create friction and conflict which builds to a crisis point that demands some kind of resolution.  Consequently, square aspects can often be found in times of great change.  Uranus rules sudden change that is revolutionary in nature, and Pluto rules transformation and the death of old ways that no longer fit the needs of society so you can see where the two in conflict would create a few hiccups on the road of life.

Much has been said, in these pages and elsewhere, comparing this current time to the 1960s when Uranus and Pluto conjoined in Virgo, breaking apart the conservative mores of the 1950s and fostering revolution in many different arenas: on college campuses, in black power, the feminist revolution, a new way of looking at mental illness, and so many more.  But what about earlier times of Uranus/Pluto stress?

Uranus and Pluto were square each other between 1932 and 1934, although the aspect began to culminate as early as 1930.  1930 was the year of Pluto’s discovery and is often linked to the invention of the atomic bomb which is a symbol of Pluto’s devastating power to destroy and rebuild.  This period between 1932 and 1934 marked the rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany and the sweeping reforms by President Franklin D Roosevelt in response to the Great Depression.  At the time Pluto was in Cancer and Uranus in Aries as it is now.  Uranus in Aries is associated with warfare and individual expression, and […]

Sunday inspiration and planetary news

earth grand trineThis week’s inspiration is the Grand Trine in Earth that is blessing us from the heavens over the next couple of weeks.  A Grand Trine occurs when three (or more) planets align in a triangular formation, dividing the circle of the zodiac into thirds.  The number three is a perfect number: it cannot be subdivided and creates a perfect balance.

Astrologically, the trine formation promotes ease and harmony, with each influence flowing into the next.  Grand Trines in earth encourage stability and security, with a practical application for all of our ideas (air), feelings (water) and excitement (Fire).

Pluto in Capricorn was first in a trine formation to Jupiter in Taurus early in 2011, and this is the second phase of that cycle.  Jupiter, as King of the Gods, encourages us to seek experiences that are larger than ourselves and when harmonized with Pluto, that process becomes easier and achieves greater magnification.  This is an excellent dynamic for manifestation.

Over the next two weeks or so Mars in Virgo will get into the act.  Mars celebrates the inspiration and fire that comes from the belly and provides motivation for our goals and aspirations, but in Virgo Mars is not particularly dynamic.  Mars in Virgo prefers to take care of the details, but the trines from Jupiter and Pluto encourages us to expand our view (Jupiter) and unleash the power (Pluto) that lies within us.

When a planet opposes another planet that is a part of a Grand Trine that formation becomes a Kite, and we have Chiron right now in opposition to Mars and serving as the fulcrum for the Kite formation.  The opposition contains stress and tension that helps to motivate the Grand Trine into action, so […]

Neptune and Chiron turn direct, and other planetary news this week

Chiron and Neptune turn directNeptune and Chiron both change direction in a few days after traveling retrograde since earlier this year, which means their (apparent) motion has slowed to a virtual standstill as they prepare to move forward again.  These two have been tied together since early in 2009, and although the exact conjunction was complete in 2010, since then the two have been within three degrees of each other. When the Soul Healer (Chiron) and the Soul Teacher (Neptune) get together, you know there is some serious internal work to be done and we are likely to find that to be true over the next week or so when both planets change their apparent direction (planets don’t really move backwards, but because we observe the movement of the planets from earth they sometimes appear to change direction).

Over the next few days we have another smaller, but still important planetary cycle involving the opposition (180 degrees) of Mars to both Chiron and Neptune.  Mars represents our drive and our desires; it inspires and motivates us to achieve our wishes and dreams.  It’s the aggressive force, and when blocked it can turn angry and frustrated.  Mars is in Leo now where it particularly wants to have its own way and resists losing control, but over the next few days Mars will be opposed by Neptune.

Neptune is the transcendent urge – it inspires us to seek experiences that go beyond the boundaries of our day-to-day reality, and it tends to blur and soften the urges of Mars.  This can be confusing if we are determined to get our way, but if we use this time to seek the wisdom of the soul instead of the ego during this time […]

My Saturn Return ate my Skywatch

At least that’s what I’m blaming it on.  Those of you on my mailing list already know this story, but after spending over two hours writing the November Skywatch a template glitch ate the entire thing before it could be posted.  Thanks to those of you who suggested writing the article in a Word document and then transferring it into the website  – I will definitely do that next time!  The weird thing is I kept saving the document because I had a feeling something was going to happen.  Anyway… Saturn transits tend to create delays and disappointments and events that frustrate us, all in the name of keeping one’s nose to the grindstone. My chart has Saturn, Sun and Neptune all in a nice little triad and while Saturn has completed the transit to my Saturn and Sun it is now sitting right on my Neptune.  A very apt significator for the confusion of the disappearance into the ethers of my writing (Neptune rules fogs, mists, illusion and all things confusing, as well as the higher aspects of transcendence.)

But I will make up for it by posting everything that WOULD have been in Skywatch here at Astrological Musings.

During the month of November there are still no major interactions between the outer planets to create havoc, which means that any planetary transits to our own chart will be singular rather than the influence of a collective.  It also means that we are likely not to have any significantly huge global events, so this continues to be a time of rest and rehabilitation as we gear up for the fun with Uranus and Pluto in 2012.

Neptune turns direct on November 9th after traveling retrograde since the summer.  Since […]
