Mars and Saturn in Libra

Mars conjunct Saturn in Libra Illustration by Daniel Marsula

For the next week or so we will be living with Mars and Saturn conjunct in Libra.

Libra is normally a lovely sign – it is concerned with fairness, equality, peace and harmony, beauty and an aesthetically pleasing environment.  But when Mars gets into Libra it likes to stir things up.  Mars is said to be in its detriment in Libra, and in Libra it tends to go underground.  Rather than be directly obnoxious, as Mars prefers to be, Mars in Libra covers its irritation and anger with a veneer of Libran polish so that it’s hard to really see the truth that lies beneath.

Here we have Saturn overseeing this process, making sure that we must face the cold hard reality of the truth, even though Mars in Libra is doing its best to obscure those facts.  Mars and Saturn working together are described as driving with the brakes on.  Mars wants to create action, and Saturn creates its famous delays.  Both are in Libra where action is difficult because all options are equally attractive.

However, Jupiter and Uranus are opposing Mars and Saturn and stirring the pot.  We want to act – we are almost desperate for some kind of change to take place (Jupiter/Uranus opposing Mars).  But Saturn is the enforcer right now.  If you are sending delays and blockages, sit back and wait until […]

Astrological news July 28,2010: the second wave

Cardinal T-squareThe big Cardinal alignment of the summer reaches another peak this week with Saturn already having moved into position and Mars and the Moon lining up as well.  (For more information about the meanings of these alignments catch up with this earlier article on the summer’s events.)

Yesterday’s Full Moon marked the final phase of the Saturn/Uranus cycle. You can read more about that cycle here and in many articles on my blog. Suffice it to say that this period, which has lasted for nearly two years, has been the source of a struggle between security and conventional thinking (Saturn) and new ideas and ways of living together as a society (Uranus) which will now come to a close.

This closing cycle of Saturn and Uranus is part of the Cardinal T-square that includes a square to Pluto, the great Transformer.  Jupiter is involved too, because it is still tightly conjunct Uranus.  The Jupiter/Uranus combination brings us in touch with a yearning for greater freedom and expansion in our lives, and this is blocked by Saturn’s determination that we confront that which is difficult but necessary.

Pluto’s involvement assures that something will be left behind.  What are we holding onto that holds us back?  With this powerful combination of planets at work there is an opportunity for total transformation at the personal level, but it may not come easily especially if our own chart is being directly affected.

Mars is at 29 degreew Virgo as I write this, within a whisper of a conjunction to Saturn in Libra at which point Mars will activate the other planets into action.  Mars is a fast-moving planet and its influence usually lasts for just a few days, but it acts to […]

The astrology of the sexual revolution: Part 2

astrology beat generationBeginning in 1954 when Tupperware parties began putting money in the pockets of housewives and Playboy Magazine began sowing seeds of dissatisfaction in the lusty hearts of suburban dads, the ground was being fertilized for the sexual revolution that was to come later in the 1960s.  Saturn continued to travel through Scorpio until January of 1956, testing the structures of power and forcing confrontation in areas of sexuality.  It was during this period that sexuality researcher Alfred Kinsey’s funding was cut off due to threats from conservative sources.

Neptune entered Scorpio in late 1956 as Saturn entered Sagittarius.  The entry of Neptune (escapism/spirituality) into Scorpio (sexuality, intensity) corresponds with the very beginnings of the free love and drug culture.  The publishing of Albert Ginsburg’s work Howl is considered to mark the birth of the Beat Generation, a counterculture which was largely concerned with pushing the boundaries of sexuality and drug use, both Neptune in Scorpio matters.  Jack Kerouac’s On the Road was also published at this time, reflecting the growing expansiveness of Saturn’s passage through adventurous Sagittarius and the desire to test the limits of religion and philosophy, Sagittarian influences.  Under the Beats, marijuana use became more widespread resulting in the Narcotics Control Act of 1956.

This mid-1950s period also corresponded to the rise of Rock and Roll as a dominating force in the popular culture, along with the mainstreaming of African-American entertainers and a growing interest in jazz.

During this period Neptune was within range of a square to Uranus (radical change and new ideas).  Although the two never did fully align, the Uranian influence instilled the beginnings of a revolutionary fervor to break out of any rigid boxes […]

The astrological history of the sexual revolution: Part 1

sexual revolutionA reader on my suggested a connection between Saturn in Libra and the sexual revolution.  Saturn was actually in Libra between 1950 and 1953, placing it a little earlier than the actual sexual revolution which we typically think of occurring in the 1960s along with all of the other revolutions brought about by the conjunction of Uranus (the revolutionary) with Pluto (the transformer).  But it can definitely be argued that Saturn’s passage through Libra, the sign of relationships, created some of the challenges that led up to the sexual revolution in the 1960s.

When Saturn went through Libra in the early 1950s the world was recovering from World War II.  In the United States this was the Ozzie and Harriet era – a time of booming prosperity in which suburban life became rigidly codified into an increasingly comfortable prison of rigid sex roles.  The husband went out to work, the wife stayed home.  This is Saturn (structure) in Libra (balancing polarities) in its purest form.

At the time, Saturn conjoined Neptune in Libra, so Neptune was there as well adding a touch of glamor and fairy dust to the whole situation.  There was a great deal of idealism and a willingness to ignore any problems that resulted from an increasingly rigid societal structure.  And with Pluto still traveling through Leo, every aspect of life was seen through the lens of expression of Self.  But Saturn was still present creating tests and challenges, and Simone deBeauvoir’s landmark work began to grow in its influence over American women when it was translated into English in 1953 with Saturn still in Libra.

Saturn’s entry into the sexy sign of Scorpio in late […]

Saturn in Libra 2010

Saturn in Libra 2010
Libra by Evelicious

Saturn first entered Libra in late October of 2009, but then retrograded back into Virgo in March, cleaning up issues of healthcare reform and other mundane details of life and the tender ecological balance that holds our body, mind and spirit together.  Saturn’s passage through Virgo encouraged thrift and savings, along with a more cautious approach to life.  Virgo’s domain is the daily details and responsibilities of living in the world, and Saturn has made certain that we attend fully to those details.

Today Saturn moves fully into Libra where it will remain until 2012.

Libra is the sign of relationships and balance between two polarities. In Libra we understand the yin and the yang, the plus and the minus, the inner and the outer, and recognize that both ends of the polarities are valid.
Saturn is said to be exalted in Libra, but this does NOT mean that everything Saturn touches while in Libra is hunky-dory. Saturn’s crochety penchant for discipline and commitment is best expressed through the harmony of relationships, and the desire of Libra for balance and harmony helps to bring out the best of Saturn. However, Saturn has a tendency to create tests and challenges in any sign that he passes through, and he particularly dislikes an over-romanticized and impractical view of the world. In any area of life or the political spectrum where strange bedfellows have been made, Saturn is likely to shine his microscope and reveal the chinks in the construction of our sandcastles.
Saturn in Libra also brings a desire for charm and a harmonious approach to life as we saw when Ronald Reagan defeated incumbent Jimmy Carter in the 1980 elections […]
