Jupiter and Uranus meet again

Art by Josephine Wall

Jupiter and Uranus are the two planets of liberation, and back in May they converged in the first sign of Aries, the sign of courage, warfare, and action.  The two turned retrograde over the summer, and a few weeks ago Uranus retrograded back into Pisces to complete its mission of revolutionizing (Uranus) the realm of our spiritual experience (Pisces).

Yesterday Jupiter retrograded back into Pisces and the two planets are within a degree of each other now, so the influence of this conjunction is strengthening leading up to the exact alignment on the 18th of September.  The combination of Jupiter and Uranus in Pisces will have a much different effect than the explosive conjunction in Aries back in May and June. Jupiter seeks expansion, optimism and shared meaning in life; Uranus demands radical action to break free of restrictions.

The second and third phases of this cycle will occur in Pisces.  In Aries, there is a big explosion of energy moving out into the world.  In Pisces, the pressure to release and expand moves inward and creates a force of pressure into the world of dreams, ideals, and spiritual realities.  There may be passive-aggressive forces at work here since it is more difficult to identify the players; in Pisces the archetypes are submerged into the deep waters of the sea.  Emotions may feel unsettling at times, all the more so because they are difficult to identify.  This is a time to ride the waves of the internal flow.

The stirrings of liberation made themselves known during the first Aries phase.  Now, in our individual lives, we are asked to go more deeply into the multiple layers of our inner realities so that we […]

Uranus retrogrades back into Pisces, August 2010

Uranus in PiscesThis was the topic of yesterday’s radio show, which you can if you like.

Uranus is the planet of autonomy and individuality – the planet that urges us to live as authentic a life as possible.  Pisces is the sign that represents the completion of a spiritual cycle.  Pisces is symbolized by two fish swimming in opposite directions, connected by a cord that represents the higher and lower selves – the struggle to live in a material world as a spiritual being.

Uranus first entered Pisces in March of 2003 and moved into Aries for just one degree from May until August, entering the fray of the Cardinal Drama.  Now with Uranus having left the cardinal signs for the more mutable Pisces, the intensity of the Cardinal Drama will begin to subside and we will be left to pick up the pieces as we seek to find more balance and integration between the individual Self and our spiritual world.

Uranus and Neptune are in what we call “mutual reception” now – Uranus is in Pisces, ruled by Neptune, and Neptune is in Aquarius, ruled by Uranus.  This links the Uranus/Aquarius principle to the Neptune/Pisces principle in a more powerful way.  Here are some of the phenomena we have seen since Uranus entered Pisces in 2003 beginning this “mutual reception” realignment:

  • There has been an awakening (Uranus/Aquarius) of group consciousness (Neptune/Pisces) and an expansion of group meditation and prayer events around the globe, especially since the “harmonic concordance” in November of 2003, building online communities (Uranus/Aquarius) of spirituality (Neptune/Pisces).
  • The rise of the social networking craze, beginning with the launch of Friendster in 2002 which took off in 2003 after Uranus entered Pisces, […]

The Cardinal Drama peaks tonight

The Gilchrist Mandala

As I’ve been writing and discussing on the show, this is the week that the second wave of the Cardinal Drama peaks (the Cardinal signs are the signs of action and initiation: Libra, Aries, Cancer and Capricorn).  Saturn is now in Libra along with Mars opposite Jupiter and Uranus in Aries, Pluto is in Capricorn.

For a few hours tonight, after the Moon enters Cancer at around 6 pm EDT, the Moon will enter the fray, opposing Pluto (180 degree aspect) and forming a 90 degree angle (a square) to Mars and Saturn on the one end and Jupiter and Uranus on the other.  This makes a big Cross, also called a Grand Cross.

Grand Crosses pack a mighty wallop since there is a lot of tension between the planets that demands resolution.  But planets in Cardinal signs are all about taking action, they tend not to get stuck.  So this is a time of change, but there there is little to be frightened of.  There is a lot of energy building and moving and urging us to break through blockages, so it is mostly our resistance that causes problems during these periods.

The cardinal alignment has been building since May, and really peaked in June and July.  At this point we have already integrated the energy and are ready to move on to the next cycle.

The lunar influence will last just a few  hours and by Saturday morning (EDT) the Moon will be out of range and the Grand Cross will have gone back to a mere T-square (just three sides of the cross, without the fourth).

Mars and Saturn in Libra

Mars conjunct Saturn in Libra Illustration by Daniel Marsula

For the next week or so we will be living with Mars and Saturn conjunct in Libra.

Libra is normally a lovely sign – it is concerned with fairness, equality, peace and harmony, beauty and an aesthetically pleasing environment.  But when Mars gets into Libra it likes to stir things up.  Mars is said to be in its detriment in Libra, and in Libra it tends to go underground.  Rather than be directly obnoxious, as Mars prefers to be, Mars in Libra covers its irritation and anger with a veneer of Libran polish so that it’s hard to really see the truth that lies beneath.

Here we have Saturn overseeing this process, making sure that we must face the cold hard reality of the truth, even though Mars in Libra is doing its best to obscure those facts.  Mars and Saturn working together are described as driving with the brakes on.  Mars wants to create action, and Saturn creates its famous delays.  Both are in Libra where action is difficult because all options are equally attractive.

However, Jupiter and Uranus are opposing Mars and Saturn and stirring the pot.  We want to act – we are almost desperate for some kind of change to take place (Jupiter/Uranus opposing Mars).  But Saturn is the enforcer right now.  If you are sending delays and blockages, sit back and wait until […]

Astrological news July 28,2010: the second wave

Cardinal T-squareThe big Cardinal alignment of the summer reaches another peak this week with Saturn already having moved into position and Mars and the Moon lining up as well.  (For more information about the meanings of these alignments catch up with this earlier article on the summer’s events.)

Yesterday’s Full Moon marked the final phase of the Saturn/Uranus cycle. You can read more about that cycle here and in many articles on my blog. Suffice it to say that this period, which has lasted for nearly two years, has been the source of a struggle between security and conventional thinking (Saturn) and new ideas and ways of living together as a society (Uranus) which will now come to a close.

This closing cycle of Saturn and Uranus is part of the Cardinal T-square that includes a square to Pluto, the great Transformer.  Jupiter is involved too, because it is still tightly conjunct Uranus.  The Jupiter/Uranus combination brings us in touch with a yearning for greater freedom and expansion in our lives, and this is blocked by Saturn’s determination that we confront that which is difficult but necessary.

Pluto’s involvement assures that something will be left behind.  What are we holding onto that holds us back?  With this powerful combination of planets at work there is an opportunity for total transformation at the personal level, but it may not come easily especially if our own chart is being directly affected.

Mars is at 29 degreew Virgo as I write this, within a whisper of a conjunction to Saturn in Libra at which point Mars will activate the other planets into action.  Mars is a fast-moving planet and its influence usually lasts for just a few days, but it acts to […]
