An astrological review of “The Happiness Curve”

It can be somewhat frustrating to read articles about questions that are easily answered by astrology.  Astrologers know that beginning at around age 40, we humans experience a series of planetary cycles that I like to call the “midlife crisis transits.”  This series begins at age 37-40 with the Pluto Square (transiting Pluto forming a stressful square aspect to Pluto in the natal chart), and continuing at age 40-43 with the Uranus Opposition (transiting Uranus opposite Uranus in the natal chart) and the usually simultaneous Neptune Square where transiting Neptune forms a stressful square aspect to Neptune in the natal chart.  This series begins with breakdowns and power struggles under Pluto, and continues with the restlessness and desire for change under Uranus combined with the confusion and self-delusion of Neptune.  Then there is a break for a few years until the Chiron Return at age 50-52 which can be a culmination of life lessons and the emotional reactions to them.

A recent book by Jonathan Rauch called The Happiness Curve

He explains: “I was someone who was fortunate. I had good health and after my 20s, which were difficult because I came out as gay, I met one goal after another with more success than I’d ever expected.

“Yet around the time I turned 40 I noticed this strange feeling of restlessness and discontent. This continued to grow as I got into my 40s to the point where I was 45 and I won the most prestigious award in magazine journalism [a National Magazine award] and that gave me a great feeling of satisfaction with my life for approximately 10 days.

“All these feelings of discontent and […]

Mercury retrograde and New Moon in Pisces, March 5-28, 2019

New Moon PiscesThere’s a lot to unpack this week!

Mercury has just turned retrograde. (For a little more detail, check out the video linked below.) Mercury turns retrograde three or four times a year, and travels retrograde for about 21 days each time. Because Mercury’s domain includes the mind, learning and communication but also trips of short duration and the technology which facilitates communication, Mercury is not always at its best when appearing to travel retrograde. If this is new to you, or if you’d like more information, please visit this more definitive article on Mercury retrograde and its shadow period.

For those of you who are easily overwhelmed by astrological language, let me give you the short and sweet version of this information: During the month of March, give up your ideas of trying to focus and create something durable. The planetary influences in March are focused in the archetype of Pisces which, while imaginative and creative, tends to cause our thinking to be a bit more fuzzy and communication more confusing. Just be aware that during these three weeks, and for a few days before and after, it will be important to try to maintain as much clarity as possible. This time is very well suited, however, for creative projects and anything involving a quest for an inward experience.

Mercury has been in Pisces since February 10th and reached the 29th degree before the retrograde station. The 29th degree, sometimes called the “critical” or “anaretic” degree, is associated with the endings of cycles and new beginnings. The word “anaretic” derives from “anareta,” which in medieval astrology signified the planet of death in the natal horoscope. This is likely what has given the 29th degree such […]

Astrological forecast including Mercury retrograde: February 25-March 3, 2019

astrology forecastPrefer video?  Link is below.  This week we prepare for the first retrograde turn of Mercury for the year.  (If this is a new or forgotten concept for you please visit this article which will give you all the information you need.)   Mercury is associated with the mind and communication, and retrograde periods are important times for reflection and re-assessment and are not typically well-suited for  beginning something new.  They can sometimes be ideal for surgery to remove or repair, but it’s generally a good idea to avoid signing contracts during Mercury retrograde periods.

We also sometimes find communication and equipment glitches during Mercury retrograde times.  Mistaken appointment times, errors in calendar items, incorrect billing – these are all normal when Mercury is retrograde.  There is a brief “shadow period” before and after the actual retrograde (March 5th through 28th) during which the movement of Mercury slows down before changing direction during which we sometimes see the retrograde effects as well.

Mercury turns retrograde at the last degree of Pisces, stimulating the imagination and our yearning for an experience of soul.  For much of its retrograde passage Mercury will travel in tandem with Neptune, the modern ruler of Pisces which will enhance and amplify the magical and dreamy qualities but also potentially the more negative Neptune/Pisces qualities of confusion and illusion.  Mercury will also be influenced by Venus during the last part of the retrograde, assisting our creativity to blossom and unfold with great potency.

The 27th brings some positive solar energy and activation, but on the 28th, the last day of the month, you will want to make an extra effort to take care of yourself as on that day it is possible to keep going […]

Planetary news this week! Virgo Supermoon and astrological forecast February 18-25th, 2019

horoscopesThe planets are pretty earthy right now which can help us to find our feet in the ever-changing unfolding of experiences of life.  Not everyone loves the experience of stability and security and a realm of practicality where every decision matters, but as we cycle through the realms of intellect and thought (air), motivation and desire (fire), emotions and feelings (water) it’s helpful to have that earthy period to allow everything to settle and stabilize.

Mars (drive and motivation) just moved into Taurus last week and will be traveling through that sign until March 31st.  In the security-oriented earthy sign of Taurus, Mars doesn’t like change and since Mercury will be turning retrograde in March, the upcoming weeks will not be the best times for big changes.  In Taurus Mars encourages us to explore the pleasures of  being in a body – sensuality, taste, living in nature, planting and nurturing the seeds of life.

We also have Venus (love and aesthetics) in another earth sign, Capricorn, until March 1st and for much of that time it will be interacting with Saturn, Capricorn’s ruler (a conjunction of Venus to Saturn culminates on the 18th).  Formalizing our relationships, making commitments, spending time alone, saving our money and becoming more practical with finances and saving for the future – all of these trends occur under this planetary combination.  As Venus moves closer to transformational Pluto on the 22nd we are likely to see all human interaction intensify and become more passionate and intense.

Chiron moves back into Aries on the 18th.  Chiron first entered Aries in April of 2018, then retrograded back into Pisces in September. Because of Chiron’s elliptical orbit, it spends more time in Aries than in any other sign (and the second […]
