Mars and Pluto prepare for battle

Mars will enter Cancer this afternoon (EDT) at which time it will be exactly opposite Pluto in the sky.  An opposition is a stressful aspect of 180 degrees in which the two planets are polar opposites, each one struggling to prevail.  Ideally, in oppositions we try to balance the two ends of the tug-of-war but until then there is an adjustment period.

Mars represents warfare and the need of the individual to defend his or herself.  Pluto represents death, transformation, and nuclear warfare.  In a battle between Mars and Pluto, there is a struggle for dominance and power.  Pluto is at 0 degrees Capricorn and Mars will be at 0 degrees Cancer.  With both signs at the 0 degree point on a cardinal axis, this is a powerful planetary formation that is likely to pack a big punch for a few days.

Mars will be in the sign of Cancer into October and until then our drive, desires, and ability to manifest our personal will, all of which Mars motivates, will be colored by our emotional sensitivities.  Mars is said to be in its fall in Cancer because Cancer is emotionally reactive; it is more difficult to be clear about our motivations and the true desires.  Cancer is the sign of nurturing and caring for others, and there is the potential for codependent behavior because of the focus on the needs of other people in an effort to care for oneself.

Issues that are likely to come up over the next few days may center around balancing our own needs with those of the people around us, and power imbalances in our relationships and at the workplace.  Conflicts that arise are likely to be tinged with hurt feelings and emotional sensitivities so […]

Listen to my take on Saturn/Uranus and the upcoming “Cardinal Climax

I spoke about this on the radio show August 9th and since I’m working on a big writing project I thought I’d  so you can take a listen if you didn’t hear it already.  At some point I’ll convert this into an article and post it on my website but meanwhile .

Remember we’re on Itunes now as a podcast (you must have Itunes on your computer).  If you listen on Itunes please leave a review and rate the show!  thank you. 🙂

A challenging planetary week ahead

Mercury is the planet that rules over communication, the transmission of information and the operation of small machinery, and for the next week or so it will be under stress, potentially causing disruptions in the way we communicate with others and the smooth operation of business.

Mercury is in its own sign of Virgo where it is usually practical and logical, good with details and effective in creating order out of the routine of day-to-day life. It is approaching a conjunction to Saturn which will encourage us to take a more serious approach to the everyday workings of our life. This is a time to knuckle down and honor responsibilities rather than seek the freedom of our individuality.

Mars is the planet that stimulates desire and passion, and it is in Mercury’s other sign of Gemini. A heightened intensity in communication is one of the hallmarks of Mars in Gemini and we are certainly seeing this with the fervor exhibited in the Town Hall meetings over health care that began last week when Mars (aggression) made a square to Saturn (authority figures)..

Mars in Gemini also seeks new experiences and does not like to be tied down, and as Mercury gets closer to the conjunction (a challenging aspect) to Saturn it will also square Mars which will exacerbate the heightened passions that we are seeing and perhaps feeling as well.

Mars is raw energy, and offers the potential to harness that energy and utilize it to accomplish our goals. However, these are challenging aspects that make it necessary to use a conscious application of WIll in order to focus this energy in a specific direction and mobilize our intentions.

The exact square from Mercury to Mars will occur on August 27, so this tension is likely to prevail until then and […]

Self-righteousness, ignorance and illusion in health care reform

Before a society can make intelligent choices about something that affects its citizenry, it must know the facts.  In the United States the debate over health care reform is degenerating into violence and at least one congressman (Brad Miller of North Carolina) has received a death threat for his support of Obama’s health care plan. There has been a carefully orchestrated misinformation campaign that has spread rumors that, among other things, Americans would be forced to give up their private insurance and that seniors would be euthanized.  Neither of these things are true.

Personally, I would rather see the government focus attention on ensuring that Americans can purchase their own health insurance no matter who they work for or what their pre-existing conditions are.  I also saw first-hand how medical centers give expensive tests to people (me) who don’t need them just because insurance will cover them.  (I went in to an emergency room needing pain medication and ended up with $8000 in Cat-scans and EKGs.)  Clearly an overhaul is needed.  But why not discuss the situation intelligently?  Why must the debate become violent?

Thanks to , I found  by Paul Krugman.  Krugman shares this interesting anecdote:

There was a telling incident at a town hall held by Representative Gene Green, D-Tex. An activist turned to his fellow attendees and asked if they “oppose any form of socialized or government-run health care.” Nearly all did. Then Representative Green asked how many of those present were on Medicare. Almost half raised their hands.

Obviously, Medicare IS government-run health care.  Krugman makes the point this commentary (an excellent read!) that if the citizenry that are so violently opposed to Obama’s health care reform don’t know what they are opposed to, then they are actually opposed to something else.

The group that […]

Skywatch for August is posted

I’ve posted the monthly Skywatch article which you can read here in its entirety.

Here is a tidbit reporting on the astrological cycles for the first few days of the month:

On the first day of August Venus has just entered the emotional and nurturing sign of Cancer and this alters somewhat our perspectives of our relationship to others and to the world in general for the next few weeks. Venus describes the way we connect to our outer world, and in Cancer there is a protective instinct and a sensitivity to the plight of the world around us. This will be particularly powerful on the first of the month when Venus forms a challenging opposition to Pluto. Our awareness of our connections to others is deepened for a day or two, and it is no longer satisfying to relate on a superficial level. This short-lived transit has the potential to uncover problems in our relationships that may have previously been hidden.

On the 2nd, Mercury (communication and learning) enters its own sign of Virgo, and for the next few weeks we have a greater ability to focus on the details and create order in our lives. This is particularly true on the 3rd when Mercury forms a harmonious trine to Pluto and is able to harmonize with Pluto’s laserlike focus and intensity.

You may notice that this month I have added Ceres to the pantheon of Skywatch planetary guides. Although I do not usually work with the asteroids in consultations, when Ceres was reclassified along with Pluto I started to incorporate her into client charts to see if she would begin talking to me. I feel I have a better understanding of her now and will begin including her in both the Daily and Monthly Skywatch articles.

Ceres enters Libra […]
