Chart for the Autumnal Equinox

The Autumn Equinox occurs when the Sun reaches the zero degree point of Libra in the Tropical zodiac.  At this point the days and nights are of equal length, and this is the last sense of balance before the day yields to night and the darkness ascends in power.

The charts for the four cardinal points (equinox and solstices), when the Sun reaches the zero degree of the four cardinal signs (Libra, Capricorn, Aries and Cancer) are considered points of power and are often used to forecast weather and other events.

The Equinox occurred this year on September 22 at 11:50 am EDT.  The chart features a tight conjunction of Mars to Mercury in Libra – a war (Mars) of words (Mercury) that threatens the tender balance that is Libra’s typical focus.  Venus is loosely associated with this conjunction, indicating potential difficulty with the usual alliances or with those things which we value, both provinces of Venus.  It’s not surprising that we’ve had a disruption in the financial markets under this triple threat, because even though Libra strives for harmony Mars looks for areas of weakness in order to create disruption and seek personal satisfaction.

The trine from Neptune to the triple conjunction in Libra adds a spark of divine inspiration and creativity to aid in resolution of these conflicts, and Jupiter (optimism) is trine Saturn (responsibility) which suggests a good balance between expansion that is rooted in confidence and good luck (Jupiter) and the discipline to put one’s plans into motion (Saturn).  However, Saturn sits on the Midheaven of the Equinox in both New York and Washington D.C., putting pressure on the forces of government and the financial system to wake up to reality and become humbled in the face of failure (in this […]

Jupiter Direct! And Exactly Trine Saturn…

When a planet changes direction (as we see the planet from our vantage point on Planet Earth), it is particularly powerful. Today we have Jupiter turning direct after spending several days in conflict with Mars, Mercury and Venus.

Jupiter brings expansion and makes everything that it touches larger than life, and when it conflicts with other planets it can be a bit of a bully.  Jupiter in square aspect to Mars (drive and assertion) creates a lot of aggressive energy; in square to Mercury (communication) promotes arguments and a sense of righteousness.  We are certainly seeing all of these dynamics being played out in the political arena, where the rhetoric has been extremely heated over the past week since the Republican convention.

The trine (harmonious aspect) of Saturn to Jupiter over the past week has the potential to harness Jupiter’s positive power in a way that can effect real change, and Obama and McCain have agreed to appear together at Ground Zero to honor the anniversary of the September 11th attacks, and to refrain from campaigning on that day.  On September 11, Mars, Mercury and Venus will line up in Libra where tact and diplomacy rule.  Even Bill Clinton will get into the picture, with a reported meeting scheduled with Barack Obama to hopefully put away the hatchet once and for all. The Sun opposes Uranus (sudden change and reversals) the following day, so there may be some surprising news come out of either of these meetings.

The Upcoming Saturn/Uranus Opposition and Election Day

Beginning on the US election day, Saturn and Uranus will begin a series of five oppositions, concluding the summer of 2010.  Astrologers have been speculating for the past year about what this could mean.  Saturn is the planet that rules over the status quo, governmental and societal structures that hold chaos at bay, the limitations that we place on our world.  Uranus is the planet that invites the chaos in to create radical changes in our world.  It seeks new ways of thinking and innovative discoveries – it presides over inventions and new technologies.  When these two planets oppose each other a tension is created between the old (Saturn) and the new (Uranus).

In the US this tension began back in March-April when transiting Uranus began a square to Mars (21 Gemini)  in the US chart.  This is when the fevered rhetoric for change swept over the presidential primaries, with even Mitt Romney and John McCain adopting the call for change that was so successful for Barack Obama.

It’s interesting and perhaps beyond coincidence that the second phase of the square of Uranus to the US Mars occurred at the end of August, just as Sarah Palin was chosen as the Change Candidate for the Republican ticket.   Palin, as we’ve seen in earlier articles, has a stellium of Aquarius (ruled by both Uranus and Saturn) planets in her chart and at the convention was acclaimed by the GOP as a reformer who can bring change (Uranus) to Washington while adhering to conservative “values” (Saturn).

All of this talk of change can be frightening to many people in a time of crisis such as the one we find ourselves in at this moment.  When we are frightened we may tend to cling to […]

Ride the Jupiter/Pluto Wave!

If you’ve been feeling like you’re treading water this summer, or going one step backwards for every two steps forwards, you’re not alone.  Four traditional planets plus Chiron are retrograde now, and while this isn’t as many as the astonishing six planets retrograde that we had last summer, it’s still a significant number.  This will change next week when Jupiter and Pluto both turn direct (move forward again) on the 8th.

When the planets are moving retrograde they inspire/force us to go back over territory we have already been through, consolidating and reinforcing our evolution.  This is a frustrating but necessary part of the process so we might as well work with it!  Pluto’s job is to clear away anything in our life that no longer serves us or that weakens us, and Jupiter’s job is to create expansion and give us a sense of meaning in our lives.  Jupiter and Pluto are not in aspect to each other so they are not engaged in this project together, but the influence of each of them, separately, is powerful right now because they have both stalled as they prepare to turn.

Elsa has a good plan to maximize the benefits of Jupiter and Pluto’s change of direction next week:

“I was talking to a pal over the weekend and I told her I was going to consciously and dramatically shift my focus so as to change my life when Pluto turned direct.

I went on to outline my ideas which abstract. In fact they were primarily emotions but I knew as I expressed them that an actual cohesive plan and the commitment to go with it would follow and sure enough these things are emerging now.

I am going to do this like the ball […]
