News of the Weird: Jupiter squares Uranus

Energy #1 from Lise Nilson Energy #1 from Lise Nilson

In my journal the other day I posted these news items that ran that day indicating the tremendous stress that people seem to be under right now:

  • a woman arrested at an airport strangles herself during a panic attack after being denied access to her flight;
  • a business owner in Tennessee shot himself at a city council meeting after being denied a zoning request;
  • an airport worker’s ipod caught fire in his pants.
  • The next day a police deputy was insulted by his girlfriend at a party and killed six people. Then yesterday a bus carrying the jury for the inquest into the death of Princess Diana retraced her final route through Paris crashed into a pillar at the Ritz Hotel in an eerie echo of the crash that killed the princess.
  • In response to a query about similar bizarre occurrences elsewhere in the world, Denise from Australia sends a report that a New Zealand doctor performing surgery on his patient misplaced the patient’s false teeth which were discovered later down his throat.

Perhaps these things happen all the time and we’re just more sensitive to them when Jupiter expands our Uranian sense of the unusual. Jupiter and Uranus are both unpredictable planets, and this transit will affect everyone differently depending upon the nature of the chart. Jupiter’s confidence can become overblown and combine with the recklessness of Uranus to create a willingness to take more risks than are wise. Or we may find ourselves overwhelmed by the urge to flee our current situation and take on something completely new.

This kind of restlessness and unpredictability is most difficult for those with earthy or watery charts. Jupiter is said to […]

“A Naked Singularity” and the Uranus factor

singularityTerence McKenna described human development as a series of events that repeat each other in multiple dimensions with an end point. Wikipedia calls this “a succession of historical periods which are “compressed” versions of each other” and states that “[i]n this manner, [McKenna] describes an overall acceleration of human cultural development, which he likens to a “tightening spiral” approaching what he describes as the “transcendental object of the universe”. The end point, or “singularity,” occurs when the rate of development becomes infinitely rapid.

relate this concept to technological development alone, noting the acceleration of technological progress since the late 1780s when Uranus was discovered instigating the technology revolution. While the acceleration of computer technology seems to have slowed, there seems to be an incredible amount of new inventions and new information about the cosmos downloading into the brains of scientists.

Like this article about a study that appears just in time for Pluto’s final passage across the Galactic Center:

Could a naked singularity, the bare core of a black hole, be sitting at the centre of our galaxy? A new study shows how astronomers could detect such a brazen object – which is so dense it would shred the known laws of physics.Singularities exist in the heart of every black hole, according to Einstein’s general theory of relativity. When matter collapses under its own gravity, it forms either a point or a ring-shaped line of infinite density. But each of these singularities is cloaked by a so-called event horizon – where light and everything else is inexorably sucked inwards. So we could never see one.

Unless, that is, there are black holes that spin at extreme speeds. A spinning black hole drags nearby space around with it, and if […]

Mars/Pluto in the news

The combination of Mars in Gemini, the sign of communication, opposed to Pluto in Sagittarius denotes an escalation of verbal confrontation, threats of war and the concept of speaking truth to power. Rather than seeing outright war in the news, such as we have seen with Mars square to Pluto, we are seeing events that create the conflict that leads to war:

  • A French official threatened war against Iran on Sunday, resulting in a flurry of counterattacks by Russia and China.
  • The attack on civilians in Iraq by the US contractor Blackwater that resulted in the deaths of between 10 and 30 people has provoked increased anger in Iraq against the American presence there.
  • Israel has cut off power and water supplies to the Gaza strip, setting the stage for increased conflict there.
  • Also in Israel, Netanyahu admitted that Israel was involved in an air strike against Syria on September 6.
  • NATO launched a new anti-Taliban offensive in Afghanistan.
  • A student was Tasered when confronting John Kerry in Florida about why he didn’t contest the 2004 election.
  • Jesse Jackson accused Barack Obama of “acting white” for failing to react to the violent “Jena 6”

Venus and Neptune are approaching an opposition which will be exact tomorrow, creating some confusion during this time that will make it more difficult to pursue the kind of self-examination required by the Mars/Pluto event. Although we are experiencing a heightened creativity now, there is also the possibility for delusion and confusion that combined with the bombastic verbal style of Mars in Gemini when opposed by Pluto could get us into trouble. Cultivating patience and attending to our creative and spiritual needs will assist in this process.

The 2007 Mars/Pluto opposition cycle

Mars is moving through the last degrees of Gemini and approaching an opposition to Pluto which will be exact on September 21, just in time for the Autumn Equinox on September 23 when the Sun enters Libra. Many believe that the chart of the Equinox sets the tone for the entire season (I’m not sure if I’m quite there, but I’m willing to entertain the notion) so this could be a significant event.

Mars is the individual will – the aggressive instinct, the warrior who defends his/her own boundaries and violates those of others. Pluto is the Ultimate Destroyer, and in the birthcharts of individuals it acts as the Will of our higher self. When Mars and Pluto are in opposition they are working against each other in an attempt to find balance, and you have Pluto’s hand of destiny blocking the efforts of Mars to assert itself and achieve its desires.

We tend to see an increase of aggression and violence when Pluto opposes Mars, as well as major power conflicts. Because Mars is in Gemini we are likely to see a flurry of battles of words and small skirmishes rather than major warfare, particularly since Mars is trine Mercury during this time as well. This could actually be an excellent time for confrontations that require discussion.

Because Mars moves so quickly, Mars transits are usually felt for a few days or a week at the most, but because Mars will retrograde this year it will oppose Pluto twice more before completing the cycle in March. The opposition cycle is made more powerful by the fact that the second hit of the opposition comes at the last degree of Pluto in Sagittarius and the third and final opposition comes at the first […]

The astrological week ahead

The lunar nodes are highlighted in planetary events for the rest of the month which often indicates a change in direction of some kind. Mars squared the nodes of the Moon yesterday, an event which often requires a change of direction. The Moon’s Nodes are signposts that point the way for us in our evolutionary journey, and Mars here activates that pathway for the next couple of days. Mars is approaching an opposition to Jupiter (exact August 23) where it can inflame our ego and stimulate a reckless urge for rash behavior and a tendency towards overconfidence. This is not a good time for gambling of any kind, and impulsive decisions made while Mars and Jupiter square the nodes could have a lasting effect. This aspect will be particularly challenging for those of us with planets in the early degrees of Virgo, Gemini, Sagittarius and Pisces.

The Mars/Jupiter influence will be in effect for several days and lead into a square of Mars to Mercury on the 25th which will increase the likelihood of arguments and verbal conflict. The opposition of Venus to Neptune that same day will bring us an idealistic viewpoint, but could also bring confusion (Neptune) and cause us to lose perspective, particularly where other people (Venus) are concerned. These few days may bring experiences where disagreements take place and no one really knows what they are about. In that case it is useful to retreat from the arena and let the dust settle before making a second try to resolve things.

The trine of Mars to Chiron will aid in that resolution. Mars provides the drive to get to the root of the problem, the process […]
