Mars goes retrograde 2016: What it means for you

Mars retrograde 2016The planet Mars is essentially the driver of the psyche.  Mars energizes us, motivates us, inspires desire and want and need.  Mars helps us to set boundaries and defend ourselves, it also gives us the chutzpah we need to go on the offensive where necessary.  If that primal instinct to need and defend is thwarted or blocked or oppressed, Mars can run amok into rage and violence so we often tend to be afraid of that instinct.

When I see a client whose Mars is powerful in the chart but it is blocked in some way, or perhaps affected by other planets which weaken its effect, they will often say “I never get angry because when I do I blow up and it frightens me.”  This is a signal that Mars needs to find expression in a healthy way.

Mars turns retrograde (meaning it appears to move backwards from our perspective on earth) every couple of years and like all retrograde cycles, retrograde Mars operates on a much more personal and intense level when retrograde.  Mars turned retrograde on April 17th, and until June 29th when it turns direct again we are likely to be much more aware of our inner frustrations and resentments.  It likely will be more difficult to assert ourselves and to express that urge into the outer world – Mars retrograde turns the focus within so that we can ultimately find greater personal expression of that primal urge to manifest desire and find our own independent way in the world.

Pluto turned retrograde at the same time as Mars, and because Pluto represents a higher octave energy of Mars there is parallel activity occurring here on both the personal and transpersonal levels.  Pluto is retrograde for […]

Robotics and the Aquarian Age

age of aquariusNo one really knows exactly when the Age of Aquarius begins.  The Great Year, the period during which the sun rotates back through the twelve zodiacal signs at the Equinoxes, is about 26,000 years which makes each zodiac age about 2150 years but when you’re talking about numbers this big there is significant room for error.

During the 1960s the Broadway play Hair pushed the idea of the Age of Aquarius into the mainstream as some sort of golden age of love and understanding but if you know anything about Aquarius you’ll know it’s not exactly that simple.  Aquarius has nothing to do with flower power. Aquarius is an air sign – it’s domain is the realm of reason and detachment, not love and peace.  Aquarius has two rulers: its traditional ruler is Saturn which can be cold and goal-driven.  Its modern ruler, Uranus, is the disrupter – under Uranus fairness and equality becomes more important than individual relationships or needs.  Aquarius governs technology, astrology, science and revolution.

While signs of the Age of Aquarius have been on the rise (computer technology, an increase in awareness of LGBT issues, revolutionary fervor throughout the world) it has really ramped up since Uranus has been in Aries, the sign of individual expression and motivation.

The growing field of robotics is an indicator of how close we are getting to the Aquarian Age.  Take a look at Sophia, the new humanoid robot from Hanson Labs:

A “chatbot” from Microsoft called Tay flamed out in Twitter wars in less than a day as exposure to the deadly Twitter environment led to .

The reality of technology in general, and robotics in particular, replacing jobs is now upon us, although Mercedes Benz recently announced […]

October 2015 Planetary Illuminations (astrological forecast) now posted

October astrological forecastIf you are on my mailing list you will soon receive your simplified version written in plain English that is easy to understand.  You can read the whole article here, and I’ve summarized the major events for you below.  I believe that we will find the intensity of the past few months beginning to subside as we move out of eclipse season and the disturbances of the major planetary alignments and begin to find our footing.

This summer has seen a heightened level of planetary energies culminating with the September eclipse series and the SuperMoon eclipse at the end of September.  As we move into the month of October we will find ourselves in completion mode as Mercury prepares to turns direct on October 9th.  These retrograde periods are meant for reflection and offer an opportunity to reboot all of our life systems, and once they are completed it becomes easier to move our lives forward in a more positive direction.

The only major planetary alignment to occur in October is a harmonious trine from Jupiter (expansion, positivity) to Pluto (transformation, new beginnings) on October 11th.  Both planets are in earth signs where there is a more practical application of the energies which assists us in making real changes, especially helpful after years of upheaval.  We must reimagine our lives now in completely new ways and continue to let go of the past.  As we continue to evolve into the Age of Aquarius our psyches and nervous systems are being continually rewired to adapt to the new energies.

The North Node retrogrades back into Virgo on October 10th (using the Mean, or averaged, Node – astrologers who use the True Node will have a different […]

Optimism and dreams vs cold hard reality in 2015: Round 1

Jupiter opposite Neptune

One thing I love about the astrological language is that everything has both a positive and negative aspect.  The confidence and abundance of Jupiter and Sagittarius have a dark shadow: complacence and laziness.  The stress and challenge of Saturn and Capricorn have a bright side: focus and achievement.  The creativity and spiritual magic of Neptune and Pisces can also bring illusion, delusion and confusion.

But there’s no sugar coating the fact that energies of expansion conflict with energies of contraction, and we have a great deal of this push/pull going on right now.  Saturn (restriction) moved into Sagittarius (expansion) in late 2014 and then retrograded back into Scorpio until this month.  Saturn’s passage through Sagittarius over the next two years will enable us to harness our dreams and yearnings into a focused plan for success.  However, it will also test our confidence and potentially create an environment where distress can occur.

Sagittarius rules religion, philosophy and other shared ideologies, as well as air travel and the mixing of foreign cultures.  Saturn in Sagittarius has brought with it the challenges (Saturn) of migration (Sagittarius) in Europe and of course even more stress (Saturn) from ideological conflict (Sagittarius).  This conflict accelerated in August when Saturn formed a challenging square to Jupiter, the ruler of Sagittarius and brought these issue to a fevered pitch.

Jupiter is now in Virgo – an earth sign which, like Saturn, demands a level of practicality which Jupiter is typically not that comfortable with.  Jupiter seeks to perpetually grow and evolve, and Virgo wants to hold back and create order so the conflicting energies of expansive dynamic creation with repression and reorganization will continue to react against one another, potentially causing an […]

Planetary Illuminations: Astrological Forecast for September 2015 now posted

astrologerFull article here.  September is looking like a pretty amazing month – not too many big planetary aspects creating stress and conflict, but planets changing direction, changing signs, and two SuperMoons (term coined by ) that are also eclipses.  Eclipses are indicators of evolution, both personal and global, as well as the unmasking of hidden motivators and blockages from the past that are ready to be cleared.

If you are on my mailing list you will soon receive your simplified version which is written in plain English that is easy to understand. If you’re not already on this list please subscribe to Planetary Illuminations in the sidebar.

Meanwhile, here is the introduction with the major events for September!

The big news in September is the change of directions of three different planets.  First we have Venus turning direct on September 6th after a period of retrograde motion since July 25th. Venus presides over all that we value – our relationships, certainly, but also our relationship to money, our possessions, and our own feelings about our ability to attract positive things in life.  While Venus is retrograde we often re-evaluate what is important to us, re-connect with old friends and re-assess our financial position.  Venus is often associated with reversals in the financial markets and we saw this take place right on schedule.

Mercury (mind and communication) will be retrograde between September 17th and October 9th in the sign of Libra. While in Libra Mercury brings our attention to fairness and ways to achieve balance in our lives – in our relationships, but also in our conversations with others, our business partnerships, and our financial dealings.  Libra is ruled by Venus so there is an echo of the importance of […]
