Election day musings

VOTE ANYWAYIt was just two years ago when, swept away by the excitement of the Saturn/Uranus opposition we elected the first African-American president who promised hope and change and a new America.  As one who didn’t much care for the Bush years, it was easy to hope and I figured anything would be a positive change.

I count myself in the 37% that still approves of Barack Obama.  Considering that he has presided over the greatest economic disaster since the Great Depression, in my opinion he has done a remarkable job.  I wish he would get us out of Afghanistan, and I don’t think that health care reform should have been the first priority, but I think he’s handled the economic difficulties intelligently and that we are now seeing the results.

I think there’s no question though that the US government is broken and needs to be rebuilt from the ground up.  When Pluto, the planet of destruction, entered the sign of governments and financial systems (Capricorn) it looked like the system might actually collapse.  This is something akin to a hospital patient who is rescued from a heart attack and then dies from MRSA – as long as the system is broken it remains in danger.

Pluto is still in Capricorn, so perhaps there is still hope: especially next year when Uranus in Aries challenges Pluto and there are minor revolutions going on in every corner.

The United States has been particularly affected astrologically because of the transit of Saturn and Pluto not only to the Midheaven of the chart (the point representing the national government), but also opposing Venus and Jupiter.  In fact, ever since Pluto crossed the ascendant of the US chart back in the year 2000 […]

The United States Saturn Return

US Saturn ReturnEvery thirty years, Saturn returns to its place in the birthchart and that is no less true for national charts than it is for the charts of individuals.  The “Saturn Return” is a time that requires the celebration of Saturnian characteristics: solitude, hard work, facing up to the hard cold realities of life.

Saturn in the US chart is at 14 degrees Libra (see this earlier article for more details about the US chart and why I use the Sibley chart with Sagittarius rising), so the Saturn return cycle will begin in late November/December of 2010.  The second phase will occur in March and April 2011, with the conclusion in August.

Saturn falls in the 10th house of the Sibley chart – the house that in a mundane chart represents the government and the standing of the nation in the world.  The standing of the US has already been beaten up over the past few years, first by a transit of Pluto (death and transformation) squaring the Midheaven of the US chart, and then by Saturn transiting that same point.

The last US Saturn Return occurred in 1981-1982.  Ronald Reagan was president, and his hardline posturing (Saturn) in the world (tenth house) created new alliances (Libra) with the new Russian leader Gorbachev.  Although he had signed the Economic Recovery Tax Act of 1981, reality (Saturn) set in under the US Saturn return in 1982 and he was forced to admit that the nation was in a recession, and that balancing the budget was “not possible.”  As transiting Saturn made an exactly conjunction to the US Saturn, unemployment reached a six-year high and Reagan’s promises of a balanced budget were deemed by his own Budget Director […]

The Plutocracy of Pluto in Capricorn 2010

House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) on Thursday said the United States would be ceded to plutocrats and oligarchs if Republicans win next month’s election, referring to the flood of pro-GOP corporate election spending.

Peasants for Plutocracy by Michael Dal Cerro

The word “plutocracy” is being heard more and more these days, as in quoting Nancy Pelosi.   It’s an interesting word as it contains the word “Pluto” which is all about power and control.  Merriam-Webster defines “plutocracy” as government by the wealthy, which reminds us that in Roman mythology Pluto represented an amalgam of the Greek gods Hades (the Underworld) and Plouton (wealth) for whom he was named.  In ancient times wealth had nothing to do with paper currency or funds held in online institutions: the wealthy collected pots of gold and silver and precious metals, all valuable items that were found under the earth, Pluto’s realm.

When Pluto entered Capricorn, the sign of structures such as government and banking institutions, many astrologers predicted the consolidation of power in some of those institutions, and the destruction and regeneration of others.  Pluto rules the process of destroying that which no longer serves us and regenerating something new in its place.  The United States is particularly prone to confuse wealth with power due to the presence of Pluto in the US chart second house of money and finance.

Oligarchy is defined as the consolidation of power into a small group that exercises this power through tyranny and servitude.  Certainly the growing influence of corporations (ruled by Capricorn) in the American political system lends credence to the idea that we are fast becoming a plutocracy.  However, the planetary alignments […]

The rebellion of Juan Williams

Juan Williams is a well-respected journalist who has been a commentator for NPR news since 1999 and on Fox News for the past several years.  Last week Williams was fired by NPR for saying that he was afraid of travelers in Muslim garb, a comment that has generated a great deal of subsequent controversy.

In early 2009 NPR executives requested that Fox News stop referring to Williams as an NPR correspondent after Williams made some unflattering remarks about Michelle Obama, and Williams now says that NPR has been looking for a reason since then to fire him.

Throughout his career Williams has resisted being pigeonholed in any particular ideology and he has been accused of taking a liberal slant on NPR and a more conservative one on Fox News.  This is a facet of his rebellious nature that we can clearly see in his astrological chart.  With the Sun in Aries (born April 10, 1954, time unknown) in an exact square to Uranus, the planet of rebellion and innovation, he is an independent and individualistic (Aries) fighter for the rights of others and true rebel (Uranus).  He can be evasive and difficult to pin down (Sun opposing Neptune) which makes it easy for him to slip in and out of philosophical arguments.

Mars (aggression) squares Mercury (communication) in his chart, and this planetary combination has been affected by the transit of Jupiter (confidence) and Uranus (rebellion) over the past two months.  This is a planetary cycle that inspires us to be more outspoken than usual and speak without thinking.

The whole question of whether Williams should have been fired by NPR is outside of the scope of this article.  Personally I think it was an impulsive move on the part […]

The Tea Party and the fall elections

astrology of the tea partyFrom an astrological viewpoint, the Tea Party movement in the United States is a product of the opposition between Saturn (the establishment) and Uranus (the rebel) that began in the fall of 2008 with the election of Barack Obama.  The Tea Party movement culminated with this summer’s planetary alignments that I’ve been calling the Cardinal Drama because so many planets (a total of seven in June and July) were in Cardinal signs.  Cardinal signs are the sign of action, and they tend to act first and think later.

The big political question has been whether the Tea Party movement, which seems a bit extreme to many Americans, will continue into the fall election cycle.   Most of the big wins by the Tea Party occurred during this summer’s cardinal alignments, where there was a tremendous force for change and realignment of the status quo as Jupiter and Uranus, the two liberation planets aligned and challenged Saturn, the planet of conservatism, and Pluto, the planet of death of one cycle and the rebirth of another.  We see this mirrored in slogans such as the one pictured here.

The Tea Party adherents are conservatives who feel that the GOP has strayed from conservative values and that the party needs to be destroyed and rebuilt (this is reflected by Pluto’s passage through Capricorn, where the structures of our society (Capricorn) are dying so that a rebirth can occur (Pluto)).  The September primaries occurred just as Pluto, which has been at a virtual standstill all month, changed direction and was therefore a planetary focal point.

The big question is whether the revolutionary fervor that began in 2009 and 2010 with the Saturn/Uranus opposition and continued all summer under […]
