Pluto retrograde and a new nuclear arms pact

As I wrote a few days ago, “Pluto is associated with war of the nuclear type” so it is an interesting synchronicity of timing that just as Pluto changed direction to retrograde, President Obama of the US and President Medvedev of Russia signed a historic arms control treaty, hoping to reverse the challenging relationship between the two superpowers and to reduce the number of nuclear arms stockpiled by both nations.

Retrograde periods of any planet tend to turn our attention to the past and to any areas of our lives that need repair or rebuilding.   The treaty that George Bush signed in 2002 allowed 2200 strategic warheads; the new treaty would deploy no more than 1550 warheads for each country.   There are big loopholes in the treaty but it re-establishes an inspection regime (Saturn retrograding back into Virgo) to “bring the two countries back into a legal framework after years of tension.”

Landmark health care legislation passes

health care reformThe US House of Representatives passed Obama’s health care bill last night, paving the way to the bill being signed into law.

Under the opposition of Saturn to Uranus which began in the fall of 2008 and will conclude this summer, it has been virtually impossible to obtain any kind of compromise between two opposing views. In the American political landscape this has occurred not only between liberals (Uranus) and conservatives (Saturn), but also between the left and right ends of each political party. The idea of compromise has become a badge of weakness rather than a time honored tool for moving through the gridlock of politics.

President Obama ran for office on a platform of bringing opposing views together so that change could occur, but the people that voted for him seem to forget that in order to achieve that kind of unification not everyone will get exactly what they want. Liberals have disowned him over the public option, which likely would have spelled the end of insurance companies as we know it. Conservatives have disowned him over the idea that the health reform plan will cost a lot of money to implement, forgetting that our current health care system will swallow us up in any case in the next decade.

The fact is, under Pluto in Capricorn there is no way to achieve financial stability without tightening our belts a bit and facing the hard realities of our situation.

Obama has some interesting planetary transits right now. Saturn has been transiting his progressed Sun which is completing a 30-year pass through Virgo and will soon (September) enter Libra, the sign of compromise and diplomacy. Perhaps his achievement of […]

Jack Murtha has died

Representative John Murtha of Pennsylvania, who was one of the more outspoken critics of the Iraq War, died yesterday from complications of gallbladder surgery.  I profiled him back in 2005 .

Murtha had a nearly exact conjunction of Mars (aggression and war) to Chiron (wounding and healing), and transiting Chiron was activating that conjunction nearly exactly at the time of his illness and surgery.

Although he voted in 2002 to approve the war, in 2005 he said “The war in Iraq is not going as advertised. It is a flawed policy wrapped in illusion” and called for an immediate pullout of the troops.

He was a tireless advocate for the military as reflected in that Mars/Chiron conjunction.  Chiron is known as the “wounded healer” and shows what areas in life we experience wounds, and where we seek to become healed ourselves and heal others.  For Murtha, the military was his world and the focus of his dedication and to the end he insisted that the current conflicts could not be solved militarily.  It’s too bad no one is listening.

History lesson: Balance of Power and the US Midheaven

US powerI’ve been predicting in these pages over the past couple of years that the balance of power in the world would soon be shifting away from the United States.  I say that not because I lack a sense of patriotism, or because I “hate America” as Sean Hannity would say, but because I recognized a combination of astrological events that were tied closely to actual American behavior.  You can read more about this in my  post from last year.

An article in the New York Times yesterday :

By President Obama’s own optimistic projections, American deficits will not return to what are widely considered sustainable levels over the next 10 years. In fact, in 2019 and 2020 — years after Mr. Obama has left the political scene, even if he serves two terms — they start rising again sharply, to more than 5 percent of gross domestic product. His budget draws a picture of a nation that like many American homeowners simply cannot get above water.

For Mr. Obama and his successors, the effect of those projections is clear: Unless miraculous growth, or miraculous political compromises, creates some unforeseen change over the next decade, there is virtually no room for new domestic initiatives for Mr. Obama or his successors. Beyond that lies the possibility that the United States could begin to suffer the same disease that has afflicted Japan over the past decade. As debt grew more rapidly than income, that country’s influence around the world eroded. …

Mr. Obama has published the 10-year numbers in part, it seems, to make the point that the political gridlock of the past few years, in which most Republicans refuse to talk about tax […]

The astrology of the Haiti earthquake

Charitywatch.org has posted its list of the . Note that Red Cross is not on this list.  My personal preference for disaster charities is either Americares or Oxfam America.

I took a look at the chart for Haiti from my Book of World Horoscopes by Moon Moore, and I’ve posted it here for you to look at if you’re interested.  Moon used midnight for the time of inception, and unfortunately he is no longer traveling the earth plane for us to ask his reasoning.  The chart for this time does seem to have a great deal of significance, and has been activated by the current planetary transits.
This chart has four planets in Capricorn, including a triple conjunction of the Sun, Chiron and Mars straddling the Nadir of the chart.  The nadir of a mundane (national) chart describes the fate of its people, and this is a strongly nationalistic chart.  Capricorn has to do with government and structure and morals that hold a society together, but the presence of Chiron here, especially at the Nadir of the chart which represents the psychology and the mood of the people, is very telling.
Saturn in the chart falls in the twelfth house which traditional astrologers view as a malefic placement – the lord of Karma in the house of Karma.  A twelfth house Saturn isn’t easy to manage, but in this chart it is exactly square to Mars, Mars in a national chart signifies the military and the nation’s ability to defend itself, and Saturn is in a constant challenge to Haiti’s Mars.  Saturn also is in a square to both Chiron and the Sun, which creates constant challenges and tests.
Haiti is in a Saturn return right now, with Saturn in the sky at […]
