. When I first heard about the new epidemic of piracy in Somalia I confess I thought it was a joke. Pirates, I thought, were the legendary ruffians that terrorized the Caribbean hundreds of years ago. It turns out I was wrong, and piracy is alive and well and has been for years, particularly off the Somali coast and other areas including Indonesia, Bangladesh and Brazil.
Dharmaruci at Astrotabletalk has Mars is gearing up to square Pluto on the 27th, and a stressful aspect between those two can be quite intense. Mars deals with the more personal issues of anger and boundaries, and Pluto, as the higher octave of Mars, addresses the larger scale issues of rage and nuclear war.
There is a particularly pokey aspect in the sky at the moment: Mars conjunct Venus, square to Pluto. Mars has just entered Aries, and Venus will do so tomorrow (Friday). Pluto is at 3 degrees Capricorn, so this square will be intensifying until Sunday.
No wonder Hillary Clinton has announced that the situation in nuclear-armed Pakistan represents a ‘mortal threat’ to world security, and also that the US is preparing to up the ante over Iran’s nuclear programme. In today’s New York Times we read: Pushing deeper into Pakistan, Taliban militants have established effective control of a strategically important district just 70 miles from the capital, Islamabad, officials and residents said Wednesday. “They take over Buner, then they roll into Mardan and that’s the end of the game,” a senior law enforcement official in North-West Frontier Province said. …
Venus has in fact been stationing at 29 Pisces. What a place to station, the final degree of the zodiac! The end of an era. How fraught with significance are the outcomes we are now seeing! And the sign Venus is in, Pisces, is one in which she can be very powerful. But not in an aggressive way: we have to wait for Aries for that. You could say that Venus stationing at 29 Pisces means you are, in a sense, helpless: you have to yield. What can the USA do about the Pakistan insurgency? Not much. What can she do about […]
In the astrological language, Uranus is the planet of rebellion and revolution against the establishment. The more repressive the establishment, the more radical the rebellious behavior becomes. Yesterday I wrote about modern piracy being signified by the current opposition between Saturn, representing the repressive establishment, and Uranus, the rebel.
Johann Hari has an interesting article that has been widely published over the past few days called “You are being lied to about pirates”:
Pirates were the first people to rebel against this world. They mutinied – and created a different way of working on the seas. Once they had a ship, the pirates elected their captains, and made all their decisions collectively, without torture. They shared their bounty out in what Rediker calls “one of the most egalitarian plans for the disposition of resources to be found anywhere in the eighteenth century”.
They even took in escaped African slaves and lived with them as equals. The pirates showed “quite clearly – and subversively – that ships did not have to be run in the brutal and oppressive ways of the merchant service and the Royal Navy.” This is why they were romantic heroes, despite being unproductive thieves.
The words of one pirate from that lost age, a young British man called William Scott, should echo into this new age of piracy. Just before he was hanged in Charleston, South Carolina, he said: “What I did was to keep me from perishing. I was forced to go a-pirateing to live.” In 1991, the government of Somalia collapsed. Its nine million people have been teetering on starvation ever since – and the ugliest forces in the Western world have seen this as a great opportunity to steal the country’s food supply and dump our nuclear waste in their seas. …

, but not surprising in light of the increased polarization of the Saturn/Uranus period during which rebellious attitudes of Uranus face off against the established order of the Saturnian status quo:
Right-wing extremists in the United States are gaining new recruits by exploiting fears about the economy and the election of the first black U.S. president, the Department of Homeland Security warned in a report to law enforcement officials.
The April 7 report, which Reuters and other news media obtained on Tuesday, said such fears were driving a resurgence in “recruitment and radicalization activity” by white supremacist groups, antigovernment extremists and militia movements. It did not identify any by name.
And it’s not just in the US. European countries are becoming more and more vocal in their opposition to immigration and concerns about extremists in their country, such as in Norway where the anti-immigration party is becoming more powerful, and the to terminate relations with the Muslim Council of Britain.
The beauty of the opposition, such as the dynamic we have now between Saturn and Uranus, is that the intention is to balance two opposing forces. We have just had the second hit of the cycle, and are headed toward the third in September. In the meantime, each end of the polarity must explore the other so that the required stasis can occur.
Queen Elizabeth is not known to be particularly casual in her willingness to break from protocol. Royal etiquette is quite clear: “Whatever you do, don’t touch the Queen!” So Britons were shocked to see Michelle Obama put her hand on the small of the Queen’s back in a gesture of affection to which the Queen responded by placing her own arm around the First Lady.
Dressed in one of her famous “J Crew Ensembles,” Michelle Obama is charming her way across Britain just as she did the US, and her popularity is soaring. I have been waiting to profile her, hoping we would find a birth time, but so far none is available. I can wait no longer!
Michelle Robinson Obama (1/17/64, time unknown, Chicago) was born with the Sun in Capricorn, the sign of hard work, diligence, and achievement. The individual with a Capricorn Sun is driven to achieve something that the world around them recognizes as success. There is a strong streak of practicality and ambition in any Capricorn.
We don’t know the exact placement of her Moon, which could be in either the late degrees of Aquarius or the early degrees of Pisces, but Venus in her chart is in Pisces. Venus describes the way we relate to others, and that Pisces Venus reflects Mrs. Obama’s compassion and empathy. Pisces is the soft side to her tough Capricorn exterior which is a lovely combination for a skilled political wife and especially for the First Lady of the United States.
Mrs. Obama’s Mercury is in Capricorn, identifying her as a shrewd and practical thinker with a good head for business. Mercury is in a harmonious sextile to Venus and possibly her Moon, giving her a skill in communicating […]
