The astrology of recent violence in France

With Uranus, planet of radical behavior and revolution, in Aries, the sign that’s ruled by the God of War (Mars), it is not surprising that there has been an increase in global violence since Uranus entered that sign in 2010.  The square from Pluto (death and destruction) in Capricorn (political and financial structures) exacerbates this even more, and we are heading into the final phase of that cycle (see the sidebar for more information if this is new to you).

In France over the past week there have been several attacks of religious extremists using terror tactics that have shaken the nation to its core.  Astrologers can explain these attacks by citing the fact that both Uranus and Pluto are in stressful aspects to the Libra Sun in France’s universally accepted  and certainly this is true, but it is also true of the Cancer Sun in the US chart.  What is perhaps more significant is that as Saturn entered Sagittarius it triggered Mars (planet of warfare and defense) in the France chart.

With Mars in Gemini, the sign of communication, the style of the French has been to fight a war using words rather than armaments, often to the despair of other nations.   In Sagittarius, Saturn challenges all of our belief systems and this will be particularly challenging for France and other countries which attempt to hold onto their cultural identity in an age of globalization.

Pluto’s trip through Sagittarius, sign of foreign culture and travel, witnessed the relocation of millions of immigrants into France, many from north African former french colonies.  This migration helped strengthen the French economy, but also meant a growing percentage of French residents held beliefs that […]

Election Day Politics and the Uranus/Pluto square

voteI was watching Morning Joe this morning while exercising because there was nothing on the DVD.  Today is election day in the US so it was interesting hearing the discussion about which party will make the difference if they win the Senate.  What most of the panelists agree on is that there will be no difference – no matter which party wins tonight gridlock will continue.  If the Democrats retain the majority the two parties will fail to compromise, and if the Republicans win a majority there will be gridlock between the establishment Republicans and the more conservative challengers of their own party.

If they read the astrology news along with the Wall Street Journal they would understand that this is because of the square aspect between Uranus in Aries – the challenger, the innovator, the harbinger for change and individual rights – and Pluto in Capricorn – the holder and consolidator of power, the dominating force.  Ever since these two planets began their dance in 2010 (and before that really, since Pluto entered Capricorn in 2008) there has been this kind of tug and pull between conservative notions of reality (Capricorn Pluto) and the pressure to burst out of old paradigms and try something new (Aries Uranus).

The square aspect continues into 2015 so the pundits are correct when they say that this battle between the old and the new will continue until the 2016 elections.  In the meantime, the old structures are failing and the two party political system in the US may be falling with it.

Happy Birthday USA 2014: Challenges ahead

Image from Wallpaperbase.com

(Note:  There are many different astrological charts for the United States and lots of arguments among astrologers about which ones is correct.  I use the Sibley chart with Sagittarius rising, and here’s why. )

The Solar Return chart is a chart that is cast for the exact moment the Sun in the sky returns to the same degree as the natal chart.  Many astrologers use the Solar Return chart to forecast the details of the next twelve months in an individual’s life – I don’t care to use it for that purpose because I believe that we have a great deal of free choice and I prefer to encourage my clients to learn to trust their inner voice and not depend on what they are told by astrologers.  If there is a chance of a hurricane you will probably not cancel your vacation – you will hope for the best and go on your vacation, and then if that hurricane does come you can always change your plans.  But it’s helpful to know that there is a chance of a storm so you can make a contingency plan.

The chart for the USA Solar Return is a challenging one with a Grand Cross in cardinal planets lining up the Moon in Libra in opposition to Uranus in Aries,  squaring the Sun in Cancer opposing Pluto in Capricorn.  A Grand Cross creates tremendous tension that culminates in a crisis of release and ultimate transformation, and the presence of a Grand Cross in a Solar Return chart suggests that there will almost certainly be a major shift in governmental forces and political alignments in 2014.

The Sun in the US chart […]

Gun-nuttery and revolution with Uranus in Aries

Guns astrologyMore than any other sign, Aries is associated with warfare.  Ruled by the planet Mars (Mars is the Roman name for the god of war – Ares was his Greek counterpart, Aries is assertive, energetic, and generally doesn’t like to back down from a fight.  Uranus is the planet of rebellion, independence, freedom and liberation.  It’s not a surprise then that the passage of Uranus in Aries (since 2010) has brought with it a huge wave of rebellion against gun laws among gun aficionados in the United States.

As soon as Uranus moved into Aries in 2010 there was an eruption of “open carry” demonstrations throughout the US by gun rights supporters who believe that carrying guns openly is a good idea.

I predicted this before Uranus entered Aries:

It could be said that a keyword phrase for Uranus is:  “Rules?  We don’t need no stinkin’ rules.”  Uranus is all about breaking the rules – fighting for independence, the right to make one’s own decisions and not be hampered by any external force.  Aries is the sign that is ruled by Mars, the god of war.  Mars rules over guns and all other forms of weaponry and other supplies needed for warfare.  So we can just imagine that when Uranus enters Aries in May, the battle over gun control will begin to seem very important.

Under Uranus in Aries, gun rights have become synonymous with freedom, such as  proclaims:

Chairman Mao said, “Power comes from the barrel of a gun,” which is a truism. Power is freedom or freedom is power – also a trusim. Therefore freedom comes from the barrel of a gun.

Other countries are not seeing the same kind of gun revolution – […]

Memorial Day 2014 – the astrology of US warriors

Memorial DayIt is very ironic that as we celebrate Memorial Day today – the US holiday that honors its fallen soldiers – the Veterans Administration is being rocked by a scandal that data on admissions was falsified to hide the fact that those very fallen soldiers were left waiting for medical treatment which led to the deaths of at least 23 veterans.

The first Memorial Day on May 1 in 1865 when thousands of slaves gathered in Charleston, South Carolina to wash and dress the bodies of 257 slain Union soldiers who had been thrown into a mass grave.  These soldiers were reburied in a proper cemetery, and a parade of thousands of black Charlestonians, many of them former slaves, led a procession and dedication of the graves.  This dedication was followed by picnics and celebration.

No matter what your politics, it can’t be denied that fallen soldiers rarely receive their due unless they are killed in battle.  Then there is great fanfare and honor, but the soldiers who return from war with PTSD, psychological and physical wounds, and whose lives will never be the same, often have nowhere to turn and are forgotten.

In mundane astrology, Mars represents warfare and warriors.  In the astrological chart for the US, Mars is in the sign of Gemini, the sign of the shapeshifter and experience seeker.  Mars in Gemini does not have a great deal of power – it can become distracted and seek a wide variety of experiences.  We can see this plainly in the tendency of the United States to insert itself in wars around the globe rather than focus on one particular situation and gather strength in that location.  American soldiers are […]
