Sunday musings: Can we, should we, move past Charleston?

racistNormally a tragedy such as the one which just occurred in Charleston, in which 21-year old Dylann Roof, in the throes of the double transit of Saturn and Uranus I wrote of just this week, killed nine people worshipping in a church, would send me to the astrological chart to attempt to find a personality disorder that would explain how a person could commit such a heinous act.

The real tragedy is that these events are becoming so commonplace that there is barely time to profile so many criminals and murderers, and at this point it becomes evident that the illness is not just in the individual, but also in the society that feeds the illness of the individual and causes it to erupt into the collective conscious experience.  The racist spewings of Dylann Roof are not that different from what you will hear on Fox News nearly every day.  “Taking our country back” is a catchphrase that was often used during the 2012 election when conservative voters talked about taking the country back from the African American living in the White House.

There has been a since 2000, and especially since 2007 (just before Pluto entered Capricorn and sent financial markets into a contraction that still reverberates today).   Between 2000 and 2006 there were 6.4 mass shootings a year.  Between 2007 and 2013 that number jumped to 16.4 mass shootings a year.  Mother Jones magazine has posted of mass shootings in the US and you can see that in the 1980s there were one or two mass killings a year.  Shootings began to increase in the 1990s to two to three a year, and then we see a […]

The astrology of Hillary Clinton: 2015 edition

Hillary-ClintonA portion of this article was originally written in 2006 before the 2008 elections.  This article is an astrological profile only and is not intended as a promotion of a particular candidate.

In a move that surprised literally no one, Hillary Clinton announced her candidacy for the 2016 elections.  In the past eight years since she first ran for president she appears to have mellowed and found her footing in the international political stage.

Birthchart and personality analysis

Since her appearance on the national political stage, there was no doubting the power of Hillary Clinton. Hillary had been an overachiever from an early age: in high school she served as class president, student council and debating team member, and member of the National Honor Society. As a Republican, she worked actively for the campaign of Barry Goldwater at the age of 16 and went on to become President of the Wellesley chapter of College Republicans. Moved by the death of Martin Luther King her political views became more liberal and she joined the Democratic party. Valedictorian of her class, she graduated with honors in political science and became the first student in the history of Wellesley College to deliver the commencement address at her own graduation.

Hillary went on to obtain a law degree from Yale with a specialization in children’s rights (another earmark for the Cancer ascendant which is focused on the family and nurturing). After marrying Bill Clinton and as the first female lawyer at the Rose Law firm, Hillary continued her child advocacy work on a pro bono basis.

Hillary Clinton’s birthchart shows a strong personality: She has four planets in intense Scorpio, including her Sun, Chiron, Venus and Mercury. Scorpio is an intensely emotional sign that […]

Sao Paulo: harbinger of water wars

water warsOne of the world’s largest cities is in an unprecedented water crisis.  Sao Paulo, South America’s largest city and the twelfth largest city in the world, is expected to run out of water by June of 2015.  Much of the drought in Brazil is due to the deforestation of the Amazon which increases the levels of heat and reduces rainwater.

Aside from air, living things most need water to survive.  When water disappears, the wealthy are able to purchase water such as when billionaires paid millions of dollars to import water to their Montecito California estates.

California is in what is being called the worst drought in a millenium.  Climate change has reduced the amount of snowpack melt in the mountains which in the past has served to irrigate the farms that provide fresh produce to the rest of the world.  To stave off “desertification” from the ground at a faster pace than it can recharge.

A drought emergency has been declared in thirteen counties in Oregon.  California and Arizona are battling over access to water from the Colorado River.  Israel is cutting off access to water in its ongoing war against the Palestinians.  Unprecedented growth in both China and India is causing tensions over the damming of rivers that provide water to both countries.

over the past three millenia provide an interesting history of conflicts over water.  It’s interesting to note the acceleration of conflict over water beginning in 2002, just before Uranus entered Pisces, the sign associated with the ocean.  Uranus is dry by nature – it rules electricity and lightning storms as well as thunder and radical rebellious […]

Revisiting Eris in the face of the Islamic State

Eris

There is an incredible synchronicity between the events around a planet’s discovery and world events that occur around that time.  Uranus, planet of revolution, was discovered in 1781, concurrent with revolutionary activity in the fledgling United States, in Haiti, in France, and the Industrial revolution in Britain.  Neptune’s discovery in 1846 witnessed the rise of spiritualism, seances and a more spiritual approach to religion (all aspects of Neptune).

The planet Eris was discovered in 2006 and named after the Goddess of Discord.  In mythology Eris, hurt because she wasn’t invited to the wedding of Peleus and Thetis, tossed a golden apple inscribed “to the fairest” into the wedding party, sparking a battle of egos that resulted in the Trojan War.

At the time I wrote a few articles about it at the time, including this one:

The tenth planet is aptly named, because her discovery led to a great deal of discord and turned the world of astronomy on its ears and led to the declassification of Pluto. Now Eris, Pluto and Ceres all rule jointly in their new classification as “dwarf planets.” has a great assortment of stories from the myths about the nature of Eris from which the stories below have been taken.

Eris is a sister of Ares, the god of war, and as a nurse to dying soldiers she has been known to fill their hearts with hate and the desire for revenge. Aeschylus says, “discord is the last of the gods to close an argument.” Eris is likely to rule over the domain of revenge which has previously fallen under Pluto’s realm. The role of Eris in the Trojan War did not begin from spite but from wounded feelings since Eris was not invited to […]

The astrology of recent violence in France

Photo source: Yahoo News Photo source: Yahoo News

With Uranus, planet of radical behavior and revolution, in Aries, the sign that’s ruled by the God of War (Mars), it is not surprising that there has been an increase in global violence since Uranus entered that sign in 2010.  The square from Pluto (death and destruction) in Capricorn (political and financial structures) exacerbates this even more, and we are heading into the final phase of that cycle (see the sidebar for more information if this is new to you).

In France over the past week there have been several attacks of religious extremists using terror tactics that have shaken the nation to its core.  Astrologers can explain these attacks by citing the fact that both Uranus and Pluto are in stressful aspects to the Libra Sun in France’s universally accepted  and certainly this is true, but it is also true of the Cancer Sun in the US chart.  What is perhaps more significant is that as Saturn entered Sagittarius it triggered Mars (planet of warfare and defense) in the France chart.

With Mars in Gemini, the sign of communication, the style of the French has been to fight a war using words rather than armaments, often to the despair of other nations.   In Sagittarius, Saturn challenges all of our belief systems and this will be particularly challenging for France and other countries which attempt to hold onto their cultural identity in an age of globalization.

Pluto’s trip through Sagittarius, sign of foreign culture and travel, witnessed the relocation of millions of immigrants into France, many from north African former french colonies.  This migration helped strengthen the French economy, but also meant a growing percentage of French residents held beliefs that […]
