Uranus squares Pluto, splintering the Middle East

(This is one of many articles on the major planetary cycle occurring now between Uranus and Pluto.  For more information about this phenomenon please review the short article in the sidebar and browse older articles on this site. )

The entry of Jupiter into Aries back in 2011 led to a string of rebellious acts around the world, not the least of which was the Arab Spring.  Jupiter represents confidence and our ability to make grand gestures, and Aries is the sign of individuality, assertiveness, adventure, and courage (Aries, remember, was the god of war).  Uranus, planet of revolution, entered Aries in the Spring of 2011.  the image of joyful revolution in Egypt and elsewhere led to the overthrow of the Egyptian president and uprisings in Tunisia, Libya, Syria, and numerous other smaller skirmishes across the Middle East.

Two years later, several of these uprisings have turned into full scale civil wars as it becomes evident that the repressive dictatorships in these countries since the fall of the Ottoman Empire may have been the only thing keeping ethnic and religious factions from continual sectarian violence.  We saw this in Iraq where the removal of Saddam Hussein left a vacuum of control, the result of which has been continuous civil war between the Sunni and Shiite sects in Iraq.

This eruption of long simmering resentments into open violence has spread into Syria and Lebanon and recent clashes in Nigeria and Egypt have resulted in fears of a major meltdown throughout the middle East.

Uranus in Aries is the independent force rebelling against the control of authority as represented by Pluto in Capricorn.  With this cycle continuing into 2015 we are not likely to see a cessation of the violence any time soon.

Guns, Guns, Guns, in the USA

guns astrologyEverywhere you turn these days the discussion is about guns.

Guns are not a new topic for discussion, but the feverish frenzy over which gun rights advocates are protecting their rights to own assault weapons and other types of weapons meant for mass killings is rather recent.

There is no nation like the United States in terms of gun ownership.  The (Sibly) chart of the United States has Sagittarius rising, which echoes the expansive philosophies that have always drove the country towards constant expansion and religious ideals, both Sagittarian concepts.  We normally would look towards Mars for signs of warfare like behavior, but in the US chart the passion for guns is found in the placement of Pluto in the second house.  This fanatacisim about guns originates not in an aggressive desire to assert force (Mars) but in a hunger for freedom (Sagittarius ascendant) and a relentless (Pluto) drive to accumulate masses of money through manipulation of the nation’s ideals (second house).

American gun lovers don’t want to accumulate stockpiles of weapons to kill their neighbors.  They want these weapons because they believe that it will protect that Sagittarius rising freedom.  It doesn’t hurt that Uranus (planet of liberation from oppression) conjoins both Venus (partners) and Mars (aggression) in the chart.  That Uranus/Mars conjunction especially denotes a radical desire for liberty at all costs.  Americans own twice as many guns as any other country, per capita.

That’s where Pluto in the second house enters the picture, in the form of the National Rifle Association.  The NRA spent $15 million in the 2012 presidential campaign, using a fearmongering campaign promoting the idea that Obama planned to take away gun rights (he wasn’t).  This same organization used the school shooting in Newtown […]

The Frankenstorm and the US Election

astrology of Hurricane SandyFirst let me say that after living in North Carolina for many years I always take the hysteria over hurricane predictions with a grain of salt.  Predictive models have improved over the years, but like human behavior, nature has a way of being unpredictable.

That said, it appears fairly certain that the big storm heading towards the Atlantic coast over the next couple of days will bring widespread power outages and communication breakdowns.  As I wrote this summer:

In addition, Mercury stations retrograde on the day of the election which suggests that once again the results of the election will be unclear. Mercury stationed direct (meaning it had already been retrograde and then came to a standstill the day of the election before traveling forward again) on the day of the 2000 election which was hung up by voting machine failures and hanging chads.  During this 2012 election Mercury will be preparing to retrograde and go back over old issues and questions just as the election begins.  Mercury will be in Sagittarius which is associated with the entertainment industry and the court system, which suggests that once again election results could go back to court.  Mercury will be in a square to Neptune for a week or so before and after the election, indicating not only confusion over election localities and voter registration, but also suspected fraud and illegal wranglings.

This hurricane will combine with a cold front to bring snow and high winds that can knock down trees and power lines.  After a major storm it can take over a week to bring power to rural areas.  After Hurricane Fran we were out of power for over two weeks in our neck of the […]

The astrology of Mitt Romney

Mitt Romney astrology by lokasiwisata.info Mitt Romney is widely recognized as a flip-flopper, but with three planets in Pisces (plus Ceres) it’s his nature to be adaptable. Pisces is the most watery of the water planets: Cancer is an earthy water and Scorpio is a fiery water, but Pisces is pure water in the sense that it tends to take the shape of whatever container it finds itself in. Pisces longs for peace and an understanding that there is more to life than this material world. There is a strong sense of empathy and sensitivity in someone who has a strong Pisces nature, but there is also a dislike of confrontation and a tendency toward escapism that can lead him to take the easy path rather than the one that is more true to his nature. Mars and Mercury fall in Pisces as well as his Sun, emphasizing the flexibility of the Piscean nature. Mercury in Pisces shows that his mental function is very watery and intuitive, as well as being flexible and adaptable. If something isn’t working, he has no problem changing his mind to fit the current circumstance. And Mars in Pisces is the peacemaker – the god of war in the sign of surrender. Mars, as the planet that expresses our will and desires, cannot find its full expression in the sign that seeks to merge with the great beyond and this further weakens Romney’s ability to assert himself strongly in any situation. Gemini, another adaptable (mutable) sign is rising in .  Gemini tends to be non-discriminating – each idea has as much value as the next.  The important thing for someone with a strong Gemini is the […]

What happened to Obama in the debate??

One thing everyone can agree on is that Barack Obama is a powerful speaker with an exceptional command of the English language and a preacher-like ability to inspire the emotions.  Yet he was universally declared the loser in the first presidential debate on October 3, 2012.  So what happened? You can catch up on my astrological profile of Obama here in part I, and here in part II.  With the Sun and Mercury in Leo, the sign of charisma and zest for life, Obama has a sunny disposition and a confident manner of speaking.  Aquarius is rising in the chart, reflecting his famous detachment and “Spock”-like qualities.  But the astrological factor being activated currently is that he is in his Chiron Return. Chiron is a small planet that was discovered in the late 1970s, and for some reason it, more than any of the other “minor” planets, has a powerful astrological effect.  Chiron in the chart shows where we are wounded, and how deeply those wounds run.  Planetary cycles involving Chiron will bring up those all wounds so that they can be re-experienced and released.  In Obama’s chart, Chiron is very strongly placed: in the first house of personal identity (reflecting the wound to his sense of self) and squares the Moon (emotions, inner world).  Chiron/Moon people are typically extremely sensitive emotionally and since Pluto is tied into the system as well (opposite Chiron and squaring the Moon), the process of identifying these old wounds and healing is a lifelong effort. At around age 51 we all experience the “Chiron Return,” which happens when Chiron returns to its place in the birthchart.  This can be a time of incredible emotional release – it […]
