It’s Never Too Late to Become a Virgin…

The US has a Federally funded programme which encourages young people to remain celibate until marriage. The programme is known as the Silver Ring Thing, because the teenagers involved wear a silver ring (on their finger) as a sign of their commitment to celibacy.

According to , the US government is considering cutting the funding, following a report that one in four teenage girls has a sexually transmitted disease. And with some 750,000 teenage pregnancies a year, America has one of the highest teen birth rates in the developed world.

“This national programme which has wasted $1.5bn (£750m) of tax money is a failure and our teens are paying the price,” says Cecile Richards, president of Planned Parenthood “We’ve been wasting money on programmes that don’t work and we’re seeing the consequences every single day.”

State governments receive federal money they must match to fund abstinence programmes. At least 17 states have opted out of the system and others have suspended funding while Congress investigates whether such programmes work.

Critics say there is no evidence that they delay sexual activity and teenagers who have taken a vow of virginity are less likely to use protection if they break their promise.”

Such teenagers do not get taught about contraception. As 15 year-old Mildred from Arizona says: “We get sex-ed classes in school and that should be where teens get the right information – but that isn’t happening.”

The argument in favour of abstinence is put by a Texan lawyer, who describes himself as a member of the religious right:

“I am convinced that abstinence is the only way for kids,” he says. “You begin […]

Robin Williams to divorce

Marsha Garces Williams, wife of actor Robin Williams, filed for divorce last week citing “irreconciliable differences”. Although Robin is best known for his comedic skills, he has a long history of drug and alcohol addiction and it is rumored that Marsha filed divorce papers after her ultimatum failed to wean him from his addictions.

The astrological chart of Robin Williams shows a fascinating blend of comic genius and tragic emotional pain, the combination of which appears to be essential in all of the great comic minds. Williams, with a Cancer Sun, also has a Pisces Moon and Scorpio rising. This heavy watery influence shows his intensely sensitive emotional nature, and a tendency to lose himself (Pisces Moon) into his environment. Mercury (mental function) in his chart is in the fun-loving sign of Leo, and Leo is the King of Comedy. That Mercury sits prominently on the Midheaven of his chart, demonstrating his ability to connect with the public (Midheaven) through his ability to express his thoughts and ideas (Mercury). Pluto (intensity and drama) conjoins his Mercury which suggests a powerful mind with an obsessive nature.

Williams has a wildly revolutionary conjunction of Mars (aggression) and Uranus (rebellion) which is tightly aspected to both Jupiter (expansion) and Neptune (fantasy), and it is this planetary system in his birthchart which describes his unique methodology when it comes to acting. WIlliams cannot be controlled and rarely sticks to the script. His strong Cancerian influence (with Sun, Mars and Uranus all in Cancer) reveals his intense attachment to family and his strong desire to nurture others; in fact, he has become a surrogate parent to the children […]

What your Valentine wants!

When you’re wondering what your Valentine is looking for, don’t bother looking at his or her Sun sign. When it comes to relationships it’s Mars, Venus and the Moon that rule. Look up your beloved’s chart on astro.com and see where these planets fall in their charts and you’ll get an idea of what they want for Valentine’s Day.

Venus in the birthchart reveals our relationship needs – how we express our affection, and how we would like to be treated by our partner. It also describes our aesthetic preferences and the type of art or furnishings we enjoy for our home.

Venus in water signs tends to desire emotional closeness and connection; in the air signs Venus wants to think and talk about the relationship. In fire signs Venus wants a bolder and more adventurous expression of love, and in earth we see a Venus who enjoys staying home and enjoying the fruits of their labors.

Mars shows our physical energy and drive, and describes the kinds of experiences that we desire. The sign that Mars falls in gives us a clue as to the needs of the sexual drive.

When Mars is in fire signs, there is a need for excitement and pure sexual energy. In air, the brain becomes the major sex organ. Mars in water wants to feel connected and nurtured, and in earth Mars is more sensual and physical.

The Moon is the Inner Child – it identifies the types of emotional experiences we need to be secure and to feel safe. If the Moon isn’t fed, the relationship will not go well and feelings will be hurt.

An airy Moon needs to be listened to; in fire the Moon needs adventure and new experiences. Earthy and watery Moons both need to […]

The Penns call it quits

Sean and Robin Wright Penn have announced that they are divorcing.

I am a huge fan of Robin Wright Penn – her beauty is so tender and delicate yet she has such a hard edge as well. I recently watched the film The Pledge in which she stars with Jack Nicholson and which was directed by Sean Penn, and she was amazing in it.

Still, you had to wonder how anyone can live with Sean Penn for so long. No one knows what the lives of strangers are like behind closed doors, but if he is anywhere near as intense in private as he appears in public he is a pretty difficult guy. And looking back, it’s very rare to see a photo of Robin where she’s smiling. She is the one who filed divorce papers, citing “irreconcilable differences.”

Sean Penn’s birthchart shows a tight conjunction of the Sun and Uranus in Leo. Uranus is the planet of rebellion and radical behavior, and this clearly is the root of his notoriously unpredictable behavior. The past year can’t have been easy for Penn with transiting Saturn beginning a transit of the Sun/Uranus combination back in September of 2006 which continued through March of 2007, applying the restrictions and limitation and challenges of Saturn to Penn’s independent nature.

That independent nature was made even more rebellious and reckless since 2005 with a transit of Uranus over Venus in his chart, always a challenging period for relationships. Uranus creates in us a desire to break free of the status quo, and when it hits Venus in our chart it can threaten our relationships. In May of 2007, as this cycle completed, Sean Penn was filmed exiting a police station in New York at 4 am after visiting […]

Stages in relationships and TV review

I’ve been watching the new HBO show “Tell Me You Love Me” which is a dream for anyone interested in analyzing relationships. The show details the intimate emotions and sexuality of three young couples in various stages of marriage and it’s the kind of drama that makes you wince because it’s so real.

The first couple, Jamie and Hugo, are in their 20s and in the first episode we find them planning their wedding. Jamie is younger, perhaps 25, and Hugo is in his late 20s and very likely in his Saturn return. We overhear him talking to friends that Jamie is the one he wants “right now” – Jamie overhears this also and is carried away by her insecurity to the point that she can’t have a conversation with him without bringing this up again and again. Hugo prizes honesty above all else and doesn’t want any secrets in their relationship but Jamie just can’t handle it.

Venus is in Scorpio in my chart and squares Pluto, a dynamic that brings with it a terror of rejection and I remember well the fear that I see in her character. The Venus/Pluto square has healed and become better integrated and I no longer experience the jealousy and dark desire for drama that used to drive me, but its imprint remains behind to remind me of what lies just on the other side of my current mental health.

The second couple, Palek and Carolyn, are both in their 30s. They have survived their Saturn returns and are now successful professionals leading an upscale urban lifestyle. Carolyn is having difficulty becoming pregnant and deals with this in the way she does everything […]
