Planetary news this week: Nurturing, wounding and healing

The predominant planetary influence this week and next centers around our relationship to our bodies.  But not just our relationship to our bodies, our experience of being IN a body and all that this entails:  the connection between the body, mind and spirit; the food that we take in to nourish and nurture ourselves and our relationship with food; the stuck places where old emotional stress has lodged to create an imbalance of energy in the body.

Geeky astrological details:  Chiron is stationary and turns retrograde this week, Uranus trines Ceres, and Saturn trines Ceres next week.   Four other planets are currently retrograde.

As humans we tend to fragment ourselves – depending on the elemental balance of air (intellect), fire (drive), water (emotions) and earth (grounded practicality), we often find ourselves experiencing our lives through just one facet of our personality.  This causes a disconnect that can make us feel out of sorts, and sometimes escalate to illness and mental distress.

The next two weeks could shine a light into areas of our lives where this dissonance may be affecting us, and help us to heal these disconnected places.  Hatha (physical asanas) yoga is a centuries-old tool to integrate the body, the mind, and the energy systems within.  So is Tai Chi and Chi Gung.  But we can also use the tool of mindfulness to turn within and learn more about areas of disconnect which may have been unconscious for years (perfect for the retrograde influence of Mars which inspires us to look back into the past).

Between July 4th and the 10th we may find ourselves feeling dissatisfied and at odds with the world around us.  (Mercury opposite Mars and then square Jupiter) .  Because we will already be attuned […]

The Astrology of the Summer of Love

It’s hard to believe for anyone who is old enough to have lived through the summer of 1967 which was called the Summer of Love, but this marks the 50th anniversary of that fertile and creative time when traditional values of love and community were turned on its head and some of the best music ever created was born.

Astrologers have a name for what happened in the 1960s: We call it the “Uranus Pluto conjunction.”  During this time Uranus, planet of revolution and radicalism, conjoined Pluto, planet of transformation through destruction and regeneration, in the conservative sign of Virgo.  This cataclysmic planetary dynamic changed forever the social order (Virgo) and laid the groundwork for the recent upheaval which occurred during the period between 2010 and 2017 when Uranus formed a square (90 degree) aspect to Pluto for the second phase of that revolutionary cycle.

While the first exact conjunction of Uranus and Pluto didn’t occur until October of 1964, the two planets began to align in 1963 and beginning in the early 1960s one could hear the whispers of revolution all over the world.  In 1961 Timothy Leary took his first LSD trip and began researching the effects of psychedelics on mental health.  By 1965 the revolution was in full swing, with the assassination of Malcom X, the Watts riots, the formation of the Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane and so many other great bands, and with them the emergence of the “hippie” archetype. After the San Francisco Examiner wrote an expose of the migration of young Americans to its city, the swarms of youth increased and by 1967 the Human Be-In in San Francisco brought about all […]

Venus turns retrograde March 4, 2017 – what does this mean for you?

Art by Immortalized Kaos

Venus usually slips through our lives like a whisper, and we barely experience her transits.  Her influence is usually soft and encouraging and I often say that we only really take notice when we experience discomfort of some kind.  Even the challenging transits of Venus are benign, offering us only an opportunity to indulge in greater indulgence.

Venus is famous for her influence on relationships.  As the goddess of love and beauty, she bestows an attractive power and grace, but that attractive power draws more than love.  It can also be a magnet for financial wealth and personal possessions so in that way, Venus is said to rule our values and the things that we love as well as the people. Venus also rules our ability to love and relate to our self, and the kind of talents and personal resources that we possess as well as the material possessions.

Venus is in Aries now, where she is more of a Warrior Queen than a cartoon sex goddess.  This befits her divine lineage, since the archetype of Venus descends from Ishtar, Inanna, Astarte – the goddesses of war and power as well as sex and love.  When Venus in Aries turns retrograde, she has some scores to settle.  Relationships from the past can be healed or resolved now, but confrontations may occur.  This is not a warm and fuzzy Venus retrograde in which we find our old friends on Facebook, but we can find real resolution here and true transformation of weak links in our links to those around us.  Venus retrograde periods are not ideal for beginning new relationships since we are looking back into the past rather than thinking […]
