Diane says goodbye to Saturn in Virgo

By | 2010-07-14T06:18:34+00:00 July 14th, 2010|Astrology|

My fellow Libran Diane Lang says goodbye to Saturn in Libra in this wonderful post:

I am past ready for Saturn to finish up his current tour through Virgo and move on into Libra. He reminds me far too much of my Libra mom who had lots of Virgo (and Pisces) in her chart . . . always nagging me unrelentingly about my diet, exercise and getting all my little seasonal chores completed!

That being said, I have made significant progress during the Saturn in Virgo years in fine tuning what it takes to stay healthy in a post menopausal body. Believe me when I say there is a LOT less latitude for fudging by eating too many sweets, high fat foods or not getting out for a good brisk walk on a regular basis. I quit smoking over nine years ago and though there are times when I would dearly love a cigarette, the temptation to smoke again is minor. I would love to indulge myself but since Saturn returned to Virgo in early April, it has been made abundantly clear that is not going to happen. At least not without seriously unpleasant and immediate consequences!

Right now both Venus AND Mars are in Virgo along with Saturn and it sure feels like it. Usually Mars in Virgo transits to my tenth house are about being way busy on the job but this time the parental authority side of the tenth is the stronger voice in my head. My inner parent is pushing hard to keep me on task with putting up fruits and vegetables from our large garden, hence fewer posts here on Libra Seeking Balance – less time at the computer and more time at the kitchen sink.

Saturn in Virgo: School lunches pose threat to national security

By | 2010-04-20T07:09:22+00:00 April 20th, 2010|Health & Healing, Life|

school lunch threat to national securitySaturn moved into Libra last fall, but earlier in 2010 it changed direction and has now retrograded back into Virgo, the sign of health and the details of life that make up our material world on earth.

So it’s appropriate that a group of retired the poor quality of school lunches dangerous to national security because they have helped to increase the number of obese young Americans to the point where 27% of kids aged 17-24 are too overweight to join the military.

“[T]the group is urging Congress to eliminate junk food and high-calorie beverages from schools, put more money into the school lunch program and develop new strategies that help children develop healthier habits.”  It’s those strategies and habits that are governed by Virgo, but it took Saturn to bring in the military!

The end of Saturn in Virgo: Chronotherapists

By | 2018-06-11T10:34:35+00:00 January 4th, 2010|Saturn|

Thanks to Deborah at Wall Street Weather for this excellent article on Time which included a link to another article predicting something called Chronotherapy as “the Next Big Thing” in health care. Chronotherapy is healing that takes into consideration the circadian rhythms that make up the daily flow of our physical system.

This may seem like a fringe movement, but the Johns Hopkins website suggests that chronotherapy can be used to optimize the taking of medications for optimum results. Chronotherapy is being used to time chemotherapy treatments in cancer patients and for hypertension.

Saturn will be turning retrograde this month (meaning it will appear to move backwards from our perspective here on earth) and then it will travel back into Virgo in early April. Saturn represents the principle of waking up to the reality of whatever sign it passes through, and in Virgo, the sign of health and life in a body among other things, it has been forcing us to face the difficult realities of the health care system.

While Saturn has passed through Virgo all kinds of revelations have come out regarding the way we look at matters of health. From pharmaceuticals in the water, to food rationing in America and starvation in the developing world, to a nearly public acknowledgement of the dangers in plastics and beauty products, and of course the huge debate in America on revamping the insurance system – all of these bear the hallmarks of Saturn’s forcing the issue so that it can be handled with focus and pragmatism.

Saturn is the Roman version of the Greek god Kronos, and Kronos was the god of Time, an aspect of Saturn as well. Some sources say that it was Chronos and not Kronos that was […]

Song for Saturn in Virgo

By | 2009-06-24T07:32:34+00:00 June 24th, 2009|Miscellany, Planetary cycles|

In case the Chiron/Neptune conjunction is getting you down, here is some comic relief from Al Yankovic complete with lyrics.  I found this on the , and the poster there included the lyrics.  Some of the most accurate Saturn in Virgo lyrics include these pungent lines:

Think you’re really righteous? Think you’re pure in heart?

Well, I know I’m a million times as humble as thou art.

This is one of Al’s all-time classics. Unfortunately it can’t be embedded, so

Saturn in Virgo: Organic Milk is Better

By | 2008-05-31T11:15:00+00:00 May 31st, 2008|Health & Healing|

Cows by Tyler Larson

that cows eating an organic diet produce milk that contains more omega-3 and linoleic fatty acids that have been proven to improve human health. Plus, their milk tastes better.

Milk from organic cattle that eat a fresh grass diet is likely to be better for your health, according to a new study by the University of Newcastle

This organic milk contained more good fatty acids such as omega-3 and conjugated linoleic acid known as CLA9 than milk produced at intensive commercial dairy farms. The difference was even more marked during the summer with levels of CLA9 about 60 per cent higher in milk from cattle that graze in fields.

Gillian Butler, livestock project manager for the university’s Nafferton Ecological Farming Group, who led the research, said: “Our work has not looked at the impact on human health, but I would say organic milk should be better for health from what we know of the benefits of these good fatty acids. She added: “They are effective in combating cancer, coronary heart disease and type II diabetes.”

The study was a joint effort between scientists at Newcastle University and the Danish Institute for Agricultural Science and funded by the European Commission, a governmental body of the European Union.

The European Commission has funded other research into organic foods such as the project which was initiated in March of 2004. But in the business-friendly United States, to placate large corporate food producers nullifying a ban from the previous year on synthetic ingredients in food labeled organic.

You can’t tell me organic food doesn’t taste better than mass produced food – I can […]

Saturn in Virgo and the Recent Abuse Epidemic

By | 2008-05-28T10:28:00+00:00 May 28th, 2008|Health & Healing, Planetary cycles|

A reader emailed me a few months ago asking if there was a correlation between the rise of pet abuse cases and Saturn in Virgo and while I dismissed it at the time the recent news about abuse of small children by UN peacekeepers (Saturn = authority figures) caused me to rethink this connection.

Because Virgo breaks things down into parts and then analyzes them, along with the sixth house it is associated with relationships that involve unequal power (classically, “master servant” relationships or those between employers and employees). The Virgo nature is typically very fond and protective of children and small animals.

Saturn went into Virgo last fall, and since then there has indeed been a rash of animal abuse cases beginning with the arrest of sports star Michael Vick for dogfighting which resulted in the signing last week in Georgia of legislation officially banning that cruel sport from the state. In May, with Saturn stationing direct (virtually standing still as its motion changes from retrograde to forward) the news has been filled with large scale animal cruelty cases. Earlier this month rapper DMX was arrested in Phoenix for animal abuse that related to dogfighting. Hundreds of animals were rescued from a “puppy mill” operation in Minnesota.

And that’s just the animals – then we have the abominable case of Josef Fritzl which erupted at the end of April just before Saturn’s retrograde turn. And this week a study by Oxfam found rampant child sexual abuse among humanitarian workers around the world.

Clearly these events happened long before Saturn went into Virgo, but the planetary cycles create a catalyst that opens up the mass consciousness to be more receptive to certain qualities. It’s almost as if there’s a cosmic radio station that […]

Saturn in Virgo: The End of Frankenfood?

By | 2008-04-22T12:03:00+00:00 April 22nd, 2008|Astronomy, Science|

As pointed out in the comment section, Saturn is stationing (standing still) as it prepares to change direction on May 3, and Saturn in Virgo is in the news on a daily basis. is another interesting corrolary challenging (Saturn) ideas about how we feed the world (Virgo):

Genetic modification actually cuts the productivity of crops, an authoritative new study shows, undermining repeated claims that a switch to the controversial technology is needed to solve the growing world food crisis. The study – carried out over the past three years at the University of Kansas in the US grain belt – has found that GM soya produces about 10 per cent less food than its conventional equivalent, contradicting assertions by advocates of the technology that it increases yields. …

The new study confirms earlier research at the University of Nebraska, which found that another Monsanto GM soya produced 6 per cent less than its closest conventional relative, and 11 per cent less than the best non-GM soya available.

The Nebraska study suggested that two factors are at work. First, it takes time to modify a plant and, while this is being done, better conventional ones are being developed. This is acknowledged even by the fervently pro-GM US Department of Agriculture, which has admitted that the time lag could lead to a “decrease” in yields.

But the fact that GM crops did worse than their near-identical non-GM counterparts suggest that a second factor is also at work, and that the very process of modification depresses productivity. The new Kansas study both confirms this and suggests how it is happening.

A similar situation seems to have happened with GM cotton in the US, where the total US crop declined even as GM technology took […]

Saturn in Virgo: Food Rationing

By | 2008-04-21T11:22:00+00:00 April 21st, 2008|Astronomy, Events|

Many parts of America, long considered the breadbasket of the world, are now confronting a once unthinkable phenomenon: food rationing.

Major retailers in New York, in areas of New England, and on the West Coast are limiting purchases of flour, rice, and cooking oil as demand outstrips supply. There are also anecdotal reports that some consumers are hoarding grain stocks.

At a Costco Warehouse in Mountain View, Calif., yesterday, shoppers grew frustrated and occasionally uttered expletives as they searched in vain for the large sacks of rice they usually buy.

“Where’s the rice?” an engineer from Palo Alto, Calif., Yajun Liu, said. “You should be able to buy something like rice. This is ridiculous.” …

An employee at the Costco store in Queens said there were no restrictions on rice buying, but limits were being imposed on purchases of oil and flour. Internet postings attributed some of the shortage at the retail level to bakery owners who flocked to warehouse stores when the price of flour from commercial suppliers doubled. …

Saturn’s limitations combined with Virgo’s interest in diet and health is creating some interesting challenges but it’s not always easy to predict where shortage will occur. When Saturn was in Virgo from 1948-1951, this cycle coincided with a worldwide food shortage in a post-World War II world.

In 1978-1980, Saturn in Virgo presided over a nurse (Virgo) shortage (Saturn) as well as a shortage of gasoline which led to a worldwide energy crisis. Neptune rules oil and other liquids, and Neptune is currently in Aquarius where it has been seeking energy alternatives. Chiron is as close now (4 degrees) to a conjunction with Neptune as it will be until the two collide in 2010, and these two will be locked in a dance until next fall where they begin […]

Saturn in Virgo and Challenges to our Health

By | 2008-03-10T11:50:00+00:00 March 10th, 2008|Astrology, Health & Healing|

Virgo is associated with health because it generally is concerned with matters of hygiene and balance between the mind, body and spirit. With Saturn in Virgo we are likely to see more issues like this in the mainstream news:

More than 100 different pharmaceuticals have been detected in lakes, rivers, reservoirs and streams throughout the world. Studies have detected pharmaceuticals in waters throughout Asia, Australia, Canada and Europe — even in Swiss lakes and the North Sea.

For example, in Canada, a study of 20 Ontario drinking water treatment plants by a national research institute found nine different drugs in water samples. Japanese health officials in December called for human health impact studies after detecting prescription drugs in drinking water at seven different sites.

In the United States, the problem isn’t confined to surface waters. Pharmaceuticals also permeate aquifers deep underground, source of 40 percent of the nation’s water supply. Federal scientists who drew water in 24 states from aquifers near contaminant sources such as landfills and animal feed lots found minuscule levels of hormones, antibiotics and other drugs.

Perhaps it’s because Americans have been taking drugs — and flushing them unmetabolized or unused — in growing amounts. Over the past five years, the number of U.S. prescriptions rose 12 percent to a record 3.7 billion, while nonprescription drug purchases held steady around 3.3 billion, according to IMS Health and The Nielsen Co.

“People think that if they take a medication, their body absorbs it and it disappears, but of course that’s not the case,” said EPA scientist Christian Daughton, one of the first to draw attention to the issue of pharmaceuticals in water in the United States.

The last time Saturn was in Virgo, between 1978 and 1980, residents of Love Canal near Niagara […]
