More on the transhuman: Autism and savant skills

Thanks to Rich for  to an article that confirms what has only been hinted before: that many people with autism possess skills not found in the general population:

Savant-like skills, such as astounding memory, perfect pitch or the ability to multiply very high numbers together, may be much more common among people with autism than previously thought.

A new study of about 100 adults with autism shows that one third have skills that stand out, both in comparison with their other abilities and with the skills of the general population. Previous studies put the prevalence of savantism in autistic people as around 1 in 10.

“People often focus on the things people with autism can’t do,” says Patricia Howlin of the Institute of Psychiatry at King’s College in London, who led the study. “One of the things our study illustrates is that these are people who do have special skills but they are not being used.”

This is a topic of particular fascination to me, and I have for a long time speculated on the connection between autism and the development of a new breed of humans.

One-third of the population is not a hugely significant number, but I think what is more significant is that researchers are beginning to look for positive aspects to the autism phenomenon.  I predict that with more and more research like this, we may discover that the human brain is in fact evolving and changing, and that rather than a disorder, autism is a new modality of consciousness.

The Chiron/Neptune Conjunction of 2009-2010

Chiron NeptuneOne of the big astrological events for 2009 is the triple conjunction of Chiron and Neptune with Jupiter that will culminate at the end of May when all three planets are within 1 degree of each other in Aquarius.  Although the exact conjunction won’t occur until February 17, 2010, Chiron and Neptune are within a degree of a conjunction now, so this planetary event is definitely well underway.

So what will this mean for us?  Chiron teaches us to face the old wounds of our past and allow ourselves to be healed, opening us up to greater wisdom and understanding that we can then pass along to others.  Neptune inspires us towards a more transcendent experience of our lives that encourages us to recognize the impermanence of life’s mysteries.  However, each of those planets have a darker face as well that can arise.  If we resist the Chiron experience we can become stuck in our own wounds, unable to see that they are of our own making and unable to let go.  If we resist the Neptune experience we can feel confused or become deluded by our fantasies and illusions.

Both Chiron and Neptune pose difficulty for the expression of the ego.  Chiron requires that we process the wounds of the psyche before the ego can manifest in a truly healthy form, and Neptune calls for the transcendence of the ego into the divine unconscious: “from a drop of water to the endless sea.”  In Aquarius that transcendence of the ego is even more important as Aquarius is a transpersonal sign; the sign that loves mankind but isn’t so crazy about people as individuals.  The new “transhumanism” is a signature of Aquarius, in which technology and innovation […]

Transhumanism and the Age of Aquarius

Chiron is in Aquarius, Neptune is in Aquarius with Uranus, ruler of Aquarius, in Pisces, ruler of Neptune, and we are at the dawn of the Aquarian Age.  Aquarius is the innovator – the transpersonal human.  seek the ultimate perfection of the human being as beyond the confines of the laws of nature, “Combining artificial intelligence with interface technology, molecular nanotechnology, extension of human life span, genetic enhancing of human mental and physical capacities, combating diseases and slowing down the process of aging, and exercising control over desires, moods, and mental states.”

The most radical aspect of transhumanism is the scenario that humans will be able to transport the content of their brains, their minds, to a non-biological entity and thereby achieve immortality. Kurzweil and other transhumanist visionaries imagine a “brain-porting scenario” that will involve “scanning a human brain capturing all of the salient details.” This will entail reinstantiating the brain’s state in a different – most likely much more powerful – computational substrate. According to [Raymond] Kurzweil this will be a feasible procedure and will happen mostly likely around the late 2030s. In this scenario “we will continue to have human bodies, but they will become morphable projections of our intelligence.” Such “software-based humans,” he predicts, “will be vastly extended beyond the severe limitations of humans as we know them today. They will live out on the Web, projecting bodies whenever they need or want them, including virtual bodies in diverse realms of virtual reality, holographically projected bodies, foglet-projected bodies, and physical bodies comprising nanobot swarms and other forms of nanotechnology.” For Kurzweil this is a form of immortality, although he concedes that the data and information do not last forever; the longevity of information depends on its relevance, utility, and accessibility.
