The meaning of Uranus in Taurus, 2018-2026

Uranus in TaurusUranus is one of the three outer planets that represent transformational forces in the astrological pantheon.  Unlike Venus, Mars, Jupiter etc. which all represent an aspect of the personality, the outer planets (Uranus, Neptune and Pluto) inspire us to go beyond the limitations of our personality as signified by the natal chart.

On a personal level, Uranus demands that we find our own path that is our exclusive authentic journey, breaking away from the shackles of the expectations that force us to live a life that is not true for the individual that we know ourselves to be.  On a global level, as Uranus transits through the signs of the zodiac, it shatters paradigms and has the potential to create chaos as it dismantles the established order of things in order to create a new way.  Uranus is the libertarian – the egalitarian, the seeker of freedom and brotherhood among humans.  It’s synchronistic that the French revolution of 1789-1799 occurred just after the discovery of Uranus, with the call of “liberté, egalité, fraternité” – all symbols of the Uranian archetype.

Uranus has been in Aries for the past seven years and you can read more about that here. While in Aries, the sign of aggression, Uranus oversaw the splintering of governments into small bands of revolutionaries and the proliferation of gun violence around the world. Under Venus-ruled Taurus, the force of aggression we have seen over the past seven years is likely to calm down somewhat, but there will be a pulling in and contracting of spending and a corresponding recession. This is not a time for financial speculation or risk taking, at least until we see exactly what kinds of energies we are looking at which will be clearer when Uranus retrogrades back into Aries at the end of this year.

Taurus is the earthiest of the earth signs, and I like to think of it being ruled by the Earth itself.  Under the rubric of Taurus we find gardens, soil, physical comfort and pleasure, sensuality and fine fabrics, the pleasure of food (not cooking and feeding which falls under Cancer).  Under Pluto in Capricorn we are seeing the decay and destruction of man made infrastructure which is the area over which Capricorn presides.  Uranus in Taurus could bring significant seismic shifts and earth changes such as the eruption of volcanoes and earth changes.

Taurus is also associated with material security and the comfort of wealth, and Uranus in Taurus could create some major changes in the way wealth is distributed around the world.  Uranus is after all a revolutionary, and we could see something radical occur that would change the pattern of increasing disparity of wealth that has been the hallmark of Pluto in Capricorn which tends to consolidate power into the hands of the few.  We are likely to also see radical changes in the way money is handled, including the proliferation of cryptocurrencies (which is already underway) and perhaps the breakdown of our currency systems.

Uranus was last in Taurus roughly between 1935 and 1942.  This occurred in the midst of the Great Depression (which is a whole other astrological story with Pluto transiting the Sun of the US chart) and the Social Security Act was signed into law in 1935 just as Uranus entered Taurus for the first time, followed by other New Deal programs over the next couple of years. The 1930s were fraught with financial panics and credit defaults.

Uranus is inventive and innovative, and in its association with fabrics and textiles, the passage of Uranus has presided over inventions which changed our clothing forever as astrologer .

In its relentless push for radical change, Uranus can sometimes be associated with deprivation and in Taurus there is potential for increasing food insecurity around the world as well as hot and dry weather.

Uranus in Taurus

In our personal lives, Uranus in Taurus will ask that we re-evaluate our relationship to our belongings, and re-examine our values regarding our earthly possessions and wealth.  Under Taurus we discover the great joy in the small comforts of human life, and this period is an excellent time to take inventory of the assets we have accumulated and decide which are bringing real joy and which are creating needless complications.  Uranus seeks to liberate us and has the potential to create sudden change, so if we are mindlessly grasping for material things we may experience a disruption. This can be experienced negatively as loss, or more positively as liberation and freedom to pursue a different path.

While Uranus in Taurus will have a global effect, those of us with planets in the fixed signs (Taurus, Scorpio, Leo, Aquarius) will be most affected by this planetary cycle and could find it more difficult when Uranus comes close to these planets in our individual charts.

We can prepare for this planetary cycle proactively by evaluating our relationship to our assets, our comforts, our pleasures, and our planet:

  • Are we doing all we can to protect the environment?
  • Are we spending more time focusing on accumulating possessions and less time in true enjoyment of what we already have?
  • Are we connecting with the earth and nature and receiving nourishment from that connection?
  • Are we living beyond our means and overly dependent on credit?
  • Are we experience true authentic abundance in our lives, and if not, what do we need to do in order to find that sense of joy and well-being?
  • And as with anything Uranus-related, are we living an life that is authentic and expresses our creative, individual selves?

Of course I’ll be writing more about this cycle as time goes by.  Meanwhile ask your questions in the comments or on Facebook!

Astrology has been such a teacher to me throughout my life, helping me to attend to cycles and roll with inevitable changes. As I approach my 50th birthday, I find myself less worried about what catastrophes transits will bring and more curious (sometimes even excited) about what new possibilities are being born, both figuratively and literally. For example, when I recall that JS Bach, Beethoven, and John Lennon were all born with revolutionary Uranus in musical Taurus, I wonder what new musical genius is going to be born soon–and I hope I’m still around 20 years from now to hear her!

Great attitude Mary. Understanding astrology certainly does help us to be ebb and flow with the tides and trust the rhythm that supports the changes in our lives. Other powerful people and geniuses with Uranus in Taurus include Napoleon I, Vincent Van Gogh, Sigmund Freud – all trailblazers that burst apart the status quo of their time.

Yes, astrology, specifically your newsletters, have helped me over the years understand why things were happening. Your articles have helped me to focus on what is important. This year I began my 5 year declutter (I look and touch everything, including every single piece of paper), I started working part-time and spending more time with friends / family, expanded our garden, planted more flowers, and have stepped out of fear, and started day-trading more (which I love). With the changes Taurus will bring, the next several years will add additional excitement and growth.

Lynn, you mentioned cryptocurrencies, will you be doing an analysis of these?

I do have a big issues with cryptocurrencies, I think they are mostly used for money laundering, bribing officials, hiding money, etc. Some countries won’t allow it in their country, while others have greatly regulated.

Thank Lynn for all your help.

You’re so welcome Deb – it’s so gratifying to know that my work is helpful.

I did write this article about Bitcoin a few years ago: Now of course there are hundreds of cryptocurrencies and I saw an article that said that money and credit cards would be obsolete by 2040. To fit into the astrology that date would have to be more like 2025 when Uranus moves into Gemini and begins to disrupt all communication methods altogether.

        Thanks Lynn,

My husband travels to small towns occasionally, and most small restaurants only take cash or checks. It’s taken 50 years for credit cards to get as far as they have.
A 2014 study with 2500 participants found that 57% of people still use cash. We live in big cities, so are more open to other forms of payment. It took us many many years before started paying online.

Most of us old folks would never go to cryptocurrency. Heck, credit cards are hacked all the time. How secure will cryto be? I can’t see it happening in 2025.

Do the planets show something beyond 2040?

I tend not to look out too far into the future. Being someone who believes in free will, there are too many variables that can change before we get there. But we do have Pluto going into Aquarius 2023-2040, so it’s quite possible that all manner of changes will happen during this time. I am speculating that this is when the robots try to take over!!

Lynn, I’ve read there is astrological expectation that “a new world will emerge in 2026 when the outer planets are sextile and trine in air and fire signs.” (Quote from the current TMA, Andre Barbault article.) This is a reference I’ve not encountered before. It sparked my enthusiasm for its potential as a vision to help us through these current challenging times, which I know will intensify before they begin to resolve.

It would be very interesting to hear your thoughts about this possibility and how it might play out.

Hi Valerie, sorry for my delay, I wanted to take a look at this situation. I haven’t heard it and didn’t read the article, I would like to see more of it if you want to email it to me. I did look at the outer planet configurations for 2026 and I think this probably deserves a post of its own and I will pull that together sometime soon But I am always skeptical when someone makes a sweeping statement such as this based on an astrological configuration.

Five planets if you include the Moon for a few hours will be sextile in 2026. There was a Grand Sextile in outer planets in 1944 and I don’t think we can point to a singular event that created a new world at that time. There was another one in 1995 with seven planets. It’s really not that unusual. Anyway, this is the first I’ve heard of it so I’ll keep my ears open.
