Millennials and astrology – a natural fit

Last year reporter explored the connection between millennials and astrology:

Many people I spoke to for this piece said they had a sense that the stigma attached to astrology, while it still exists, had receded as the practice has grabbed a foothold in online culture, especially for young people.

“Over the past two years, we’ve really seen a reframing of New Age practices, very much geared toward a Millennial and young Gen X quotient,” says Lucie Greene, the worldwide director of J. Walter Thompson’s innovation group, which tracks and predicts cultural trends.

Callie Beusman, a senior editor at Broadly, says traffic for the site’s horoscopes “has grown really exponentially.” Stella Bugbee, the president and editor-in-chief of The Cut, says a typical horoscope post on the site got 150 percent more traffic in 2017 than the year before.

In some ways, astrology is perfectly suited for the internet age. There’s a low barrier to entry, and nearly endless depths to plumb if you feel like falling down a Google research hole. The availability of more in-depth information online has given this cultural wave of astrology a certain erudition—more jokes about Saturn returns, fewer “Hey baby, what’s your sign?” pickup lines.

Before the Internet, the only form of astrology available to the masses was sun sign “horoscopes” in newspapers, a very watered-down form of astrology that is more poetry and creative writing than actual astrology.  I started this blog in 2005, at the very beginning of the spread of astrological wisdom over the Internet, as a way to help to spread the word about the ways in which astrology can be seen at work in the real world.

Sagittarius New Moon December 7th: Begin a new adventure!

Sagittarius New MoonThis New Moon in Sagittarius brings with it an opportunity to begin a new adventure.  The New Moon is a fresh new start – the heart (Moon) unites with the conscious intent (Sun) to forge a new direction, and in Sagittarius the sky is the limit.  Sagittarius governs travel, whether travel of the mind and the heart, or of the body through space and time.  This is a time to expand and seek a new experience that opens up our hearts and souls to greater magic and wonder than we ever dreamed possible.

Sagittarius periods feel lucky, and this one is no exception with Jupiter, the planet of luck and good fortune, tightly aligned with the New Moon, amplifying even more the potential for greater awareness and opportunities.  However, all is not perfectly rosy at this New Moon.  Mars, the planet of aggression and desire, is in the spiritual yet potentially confusing sign of Pisces which can be somewhat challenging to begin with, and it aligns with Neptune as well which is a doubling of the desire for transcendence and perhaps even escapism which can cause confusion.  The combination of Pisces’s yearning to transcend this mundane reality with the Sagittarius pull towards greener pastures can create problems if we fail to keep our feet on the ground.

Geeky astrological detail:  While Pisces and Sagittarius form a natural square and are therefore in conflict with each other, they are also linked by Jupiter which rules both signs.  Using Jupiter as the figurative North Star to guide us is the key to maximizing the potential of the New Moon.

However, this Pisces/Sagittarius influence is not necessarily negative – if it is channeled into creativity or if we absorb ourselves in experiences of […]

Thanksgiving Gemini full moon makes everything possible

The Sun enters Sagittarius on the 22nd, ending the Scorpio season and beginning the festivities of the holiday season, and the Sagittarius season begins with a Full Moon on the 23rd at the very first degree of Gemini opposite the Sagittarius Sun.  The Gemini/Sag polarity is all about collecting and assimilating information – this is a time to open the mind and see what drops into it.  It’s time to keep an open mind, and prepare for an awakening and a shift in belief systems where necessary.

Gemini is the trickster – under its influence things are not always what they appear.  But there is a flexibility and adaptability available to us now which can offer a change of perspective and awareness.

This Full Moon has a special abundance of positive Jupiter Juju with Jupiter aligned with the Sun and opposed by the Moon, helping to instill a new level of confidence you never dreamed possible.

Full Moons are the peak of the lunar cycle – the lunar light is in ascendance over the solar conscious experience, and the emotional intensity available to us can be channeled through the Will in order to create real Magic.   This Full Moon is energized by Mars which helps to focus the power of it, and because Mars is in Pisces the power is softened and allowed to be sweet yet intense.

Sometimes lunar events are sweet and mild, and sometimes they are potent and rocky.  This Gemini Full Moon is loaded with potential, as well as the fuel to light the fire to help us to accomplish great things.

Some things to keep in mind to get the most out of this Full Moon:

  • Reality can change in an instant, so be prepared for a […]

Mercury retrograde and the “Shadow Period”

Thanks to the Internet, the magic of REAL astrology (as opposed to those Sun Sign horoscopes you still see everywhere) is spreading and the concept of Mercury retrograde has gone mainstream.  This is exciting since even people who profess not to “believe in” astrology often are aware that when Mercury is retrograde things often don’t operate as we expect them to.  Machinery glitches, communication breakdowns, an epidemic of “but I thought you said…” – all are widespread under the influence of Mercury retrograde.

In classical astrology, Mercury is said to be “debilitated” when it is retrograde; it doesn’t operate as it normally does which is to facilitate communication and messaging, as well as daily routines, short distance travel and plans of all kinds.  As most of you know, I don’t particularly care for these ideas of positive and negative as they cause us to miss out on the benefits offered by astrological factors that we normally consider negative such as Mercury retrograde and Saturn and Pluto transits.  I view the retrograde phase of a planetary cycle as being a part of the natural ebb and flow of nature.  The waves of the ocean flow towards the beach, and then they must flow back to the ocean before returning to the sand.  The joyful warm days of summer give way to the bitter cold days of winter’s hardship.

When Mercury is retrograde, it’s not uncommon to run into problems.  Contracts written when Mercury is retrograde often have to be renegotiated.  Plans made often have to be revised.  Travel reservations are often stymied. Communication breakdowns are common.  Mercury retrograde periods are excellent fr some things though – they are perfect for review and reassessment.  They are perfect for do-overs and repairs.  It […]

Venus retrograde and the significance of 40 days

40 days venus retrograde (This article first appeared in 2014.)

makes an interesting point – that the 40 days and 40 nights of the Venus retro period corresponds to the 40 days and 40 nights that Jesus traveled in the wilderness.

Forty is mentioned in the bible often, but most famously when Jesus was tempted by Satan in the wilderness for forty days. Could this be referring to the astrological phenomena of Venus retrograde? After all, Venus has two sides to her. She is the goddess of love and war according to the Babylonians. The word Lucifer (which is often confused with Satan) means light-bringer and refers to Venus in her morning star phase. The ancients said the first few days of her Lucifer phase was a particularly dangerous time. People born with Venus as a morning star are said to rush headlong into love affairs and are very passionate. Venus as an evening star is has more of the receptive, traditional meaning.

You might also be interested  in this earlier article I wrote about the two sides of Venus, and in this article about Lucifer as Venus, the Light Bringer.

I became curious about the significance of 40 days and 40 nights, because before Jesus was tempted in the wilderness for this length of time rain fell on Noah for 40 days and 40 nights.  Moses fasted for 40 days and 40 nights before he was given the Commandments. Jesus remained on the earth for 40 days and 40 nights after the crucifixion.  And Buddha is said to have fasted and meditated for 40 days and 40 nights before reaching Samadhi.  These 40-day periods seem to relate to periods of trial and […]
